Shows are garbage. Movies are garbage. I admit I'm picky yet when I go through it I'm like what is this trash. Modern Steven Seagull movies. Their series are all targeted against women or teens as well. Witcher is about the only thing I have watched on Netflix. They aren't the only ones either. No more Altered Carbon. No more Expanse. Don't know where Witcher 3 was going but the first half was stupid and worse cliff hanger I've ever witnessed. I honestly don't know if its me or shows yet shit is just uninspired and uninteresting.

Content is King. Even though Netflix spend billions on content creation annually, the majority of what they produce is mediocre to bad. They dont just need to create shows that millions of people watch, they need content that will penetrate pop culture that will result in massive merchandise sales like Stranger Things has. Its easier said then done but Netflix needs about a 5 or 6 shows in rotation that are on the Game of Thrones and Stranger Things level to restart their growth engine

All power to Rich, but audio is a deep, deep problem. People tend to underestimate how complicated sound is because they can't see it. The primary thing that wasn't addressed here is when you are overlaying new audio onto existing audio, en masse, you are not accounting for background music, spatial sound and fx. It's not a "cut and replace" type procedure, the same way that heart surgery is not just about replacing the heart itself, but connecting the valves back to the body as well. Different languages are cool, but they were created before the entire world could be connected instantaneously. From my perspective, start-ups that progress the rate at which the entire world learns english would be a better use of energy.

I'd far rather see something in the original language with subtitles than this Frankenstein's monster of graphics, 'AI' and dubbing.
@Dunixify
@Dunixify 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess depends on the media. If Netflix produced the content themselves, they have access to the project files in whatever editing / production software was used so they quite literally could translate, record/tts, and replace just the audio track. For dialog anyway... of course with any such problem there will be a long tail of exceptions. And even some background sounds will be voices that themselves need to be translated and re-recorded/tts synthesized. I think the problem you're framing of teaching 80% of the world English is a lot harder... assuming they're even willing to, which I don't think they are, and justifiably so.

I agree with him, if you don’t know English, you have no right to complain about your country being poor. English is the language of the global elite. If you don’t know it, you are locked out of the global economy. They need to learn it or become redundant.

I speak as an indian, both amazon prime and disney+ (bundled in with a local streaming giant hotstar which already had a monopoly in the region) both cost about 20-30$ per year (10$ per month in the US) Netflix has a cheap mobile only plan for about 3$ but the standard plan costs about 8$ (14$ in the US), now why would anyone pay 24$ for 3 months of netflix when they can have a disney+ subscription for the same amount that gives them more local shows that cater to their interests? Unless they can further reduce the prices to 5$ or lesser I dont see them ever gaining much market share here!

I think there are a few points missing. The translation sounds good, but going to movies is still a few steps away since a bad or awkward translation could ruin a good movie. Another point worth mentioning is that Amazon is pioneering a tranlation model that doesn't need to go from speech to text and then back to speech, instead they are trying to from speech in one language to speech in another, which may prove important to keep the correct intonation and intent. Finally it will probably always be a bit expensive to do a correct translation in movies since there will always be people doing quality control and retouching the movie to avoid gross errors. The technology will be ready when it is cheaper to pay people to correct the AI work, including the CG on lip sync, than just doing the whole translation. themselves.

@d7home2129

Well, so far their only conceptual edges is trying to match speaking time and lip syncing. Otherwise, there are plenty of transcribing software other than the fact that for most movies, transcripts are available before release (i.e. the script). Translation isn't really an obstacle especially for netflix as there are alot of softwares for it and even making people do it is not expensive for them given the value. Something very important they seem to be missing is tones and conveying emotions through speech as what they have done so far could be done using google keyboard microphone and google translate (for translating and reading script) the only thing they have done is the pixelated deepfake. To win over netflix they only have to perfect the deep fake as netflix could afford dubbing or also perfect tonality. And if they were able to voice-fake actors choices it would be an amazing addition. In reality, thier biggest market,for me, seems to be social media as the bar for tonality and perfect translation is lower as well as the bar for accuracy of deep fake in social media people would mostly care that its understandable and smooth(not annoying, not creepy, not very bad quality, and not exact same voice and tone all the time)

Or is simply to animate mouth movements to existing recorded voice acted lines in a different language?

They could make a separate creator app where new filmmakers can put content up and get it viewed and rated by others. $3 plan to just watch them $5 plan to rate and watch and $25 or even $100 to make content on the app (monthly) so random people won’t spam the app with bad content. The best rated ones would get a budget from Netflix and be put on their main app. This would give new filmmakers a chance to get a budget if they can make good movies and give Netflix a chance to get good content at lower prices. A lot of low budget films could be box office with the right budget. Categorize the content between reviewed and unreviewed (by verified users) and also have categories for 10 minutes 30 minutes and 1 hour +. Verified accounts have to have 3 or more quality uploads. Also have verified directors in each country who oversee which content should get a budget. This way they can globalize and have more local content for their viewers. They also get to see what type of content people want based on the highest rated and viewed content. Similar to KZfaq except the barrier of entry would be $25+. (First comment was deleted for some reason).

Netflix's problem was never their inability to market their content. Their problems stems from producing lackluster content and killing shows that have great potential great too soon and overpricing their packages. It doesn't matter how hard you try to market a product or try to fix prices so that they are lower then those of your competitors, if you have an inferior product to give to the market, you will soon lose your customers, as Netflix continues to lose theirs. Look man, Netflix's packages are far more expensive, one of the most expensive actually. That coupled with boring content, makes a perfect storm for a great company to fall, even if you try to incorporate more languages in the content created, cause it all has to begin with quality content that can both hook new consumers and convince them to stay. They lack quality content, overprice packages and kill good shows, and they are also about to include ads, pff, it has fallen, even if they invest in some deep fake technology.

I'm so comfortable in my mother tongue tamil if someone makes a perfect translation tool english to tamil or tamil i just get 10times stronger in knowledge because people get more confident when they speak in their mother tongue ! But a perfect translation tool is impossible in this decade maybe ai should do but today's ai growth is not enought for such level translation ! But I'm glad someone does that our some effort !

A stock of a company should not be the overall story of a business, I do agree with most of this video but from what I know a stock should not tell an entire story, considering that Netflix just hit a subscriber peak !

LOL as if short-term stock price (nevermind the price of anything *right now*) has any bearing on actual reality. That's not how equities (actually) work, but aight.

This is an amazing video. Rich could just send it to the head honchos at Netflix and get acquired. Also, I’m so happy you didn’t include an ad in your content- those felt like cheap shots and really lowered the brand

@@JohnCooganPlus it didn’t fit into the narrative, and when you tried to fit it in it felt really forced. And it left an aftertaste: the next day when I tried to remember the best points of the video, all I remembered was your ad for masterworks and that I didn’t enjoy it. Which is good for masterworks but bad for your brand.

Fantastic. You and your AI mate help save Netflix, while the rest of the regular viewers continue to shun trash content and rather spend their money on value.

Oh my god! Automatic translation, what a new and brilliant idea. Seriously though, tweaking mouth movements using machine learning is cool, but doesn't make the difference between a dubbed programme being watchable or not. In the whole sphere of translation and localisation of content, syncing lip movements is the very last thing you should be thinking about, it could be the cherry on the cake of a good production, but we've lived without it for 100 years. Before this comes (in order of importance): cultural relevance and interest of content, quality of voice acting, quality of audio recording and editing, the actual translation of the dialogue: managing to retain original meaning while still sounding natural in target language and all that good stuff. Once you can tell me that you've nailed all that, then you can bring out your AI toys to tweak the lipsync.

I don't think this will fix the problem. The problem with dubs isn't that the lips aren't synchronized properly, the main problem is that the meaning gets lost in translation. That's why people flock to subs over dubs and deep faking the lip movements won't fix that. Also part of the problem are just the cultural barriers. There are no cultural equivalents to some jokes or idioms. So, those won't be helped with this tech as well. I think this would be great for like educational material but not for entertainment.

I have grave doubts. Just producing a decent translation and producing the accompanying facial manipulation is a feat unto itself, but will the delivery have impact and meaning? Go watch a few poorly dubbed anime shows with decent voice talent. You can tell something about the voice acting direction went wrong.

In 2022, the total revenue of the video streaming platform Netflix amounted to approximately 31.6 billion U.S. dollars, having grown from 3.6 billion U.S. dollars a decade ago. So yeah you don't seem to understand how successful Netflix actually is.

Contents is king. The main problem is Netflix contents is not great. Most original show is mediocre at best. Their competitor got better contents. Also they need to deal with pirated problem. As a viewer, I not enjoy watching the dubbed version, I rather see the subtitle cos I want to hear the original voice. Just make a free version with ads, is a faster solution.
