The only difference between New Orleans Square and Galaxy’s Edge is that I don’t want an expanded GE. It was themed around the sequels when it should be on Endor/Hoth/Tatooine. Good video as always HeyBrickey!!

Amazing video, as always love the secret history of Disneyland and the secret history of one of my favorite lands!

The singular focus on merchandise over experience since Eisner is what keeps the Disney parks marching towards the blandness of "shopping malls with rides". The glassblowers, the curio shops, edible sit-down food, all the things which made for an immersive experience -- all abandoned to sell the cheapest products to a captive audience. The Blue Bayou was a great meal in the 60s and 70s, as were the other places. Now it's just, well, yuck.

I dearly remember the "non-compliant" entrance .. 2 steps down , Fortune Red on my right and Swashbuckling goods in barrels ! Thanks , Brickey . Been attending since '55 !

I really love the history of the Disneyland arcades. Teddi Barra's, the Starcade, the Shooting Gallery, there is something really cool with knowing that they once existed alongside our old faves! Kinda feels like we're seeing arcades in general fading away. Saw a couple get closed recently... time and tide wait for no one.

Walt Disney’s last opening day. The man was at his peak. His art was just hitting stride in the park. Even more was launched in his remaining weeks. AMAZING.

Aloha Brickey..I loved those games as a kid,and I was disapointed when they removed them. As a boy growing up near the park and we went alot from the time I was 3, waiting for Pirates and then the HM seemed liked years..but the arcade gave me something to do while my mom and dad shopped sipping on Mint Julips... I never get tired of hearing these stories. And I've read about alot of them before. But the videos really do the stories and history justice!

It makes me wonder if they are similar to the shooting games that are at Kettleman City’s Bravo Farms. Bricky, you probably haven’t been up the 5 to NorCal often but, the place is a total Disneyland tribute to various different types of attractions.

I wasn't born yet when New Orleans Square opened, but I've seen comments claiming that some guests, especially kids, complained about the lack of rides at the time. "It's just like Main Street, nothin' but shops!" someone recalled thinking in a comment I once read. People have also mentioned being taunted by the locked facade of Haunted Mansion, which sat there for years before the attraction was built. There was just no social media yet for them to complain to! :D

This is why I love your videos. In all of my 40+ years, have I ever noticed all of these little hidden or not so hidden details in one of my favorite parts in the park. I get to see the park with different eyes when I watch. You have taught me to look up and around and enjoy the Vibes in the little details. Again, thank you, Brickey, for all that you do. 🧡🏰

Great info, especially this episode, which a lot of these facts I didnt know. That corridor (of now shops) always seemed a mystery as a kid, and kind of boring... but as an adult I really do appreciate the immersion of that area, especially at night!

I often frequented Disneyland from 1963 to 1990. I went to the One of a Kind shop one day and bought my girlfriend an amazing Ruby-eyed, Markesite lizard that she still wears to this day, (We've been married for over 30 years). Such a cool and unusual store when Antique shops were not so popular.

Everyone has different standards. Personally, I'd take an immersively themed land like New Orleans Square or Galaxy's Edge with no rides over present-day industrial-themed Avengers Hallway, even if it included its promised E-Ticket.

Thanks fer conjurin' up all those memory's in me wee, iddy brain! That Pirate Arcade was truly an "Attraction", we would be quite willing to spend hours playin' 'round in there! An' Cap'n Red gave out some strangely scurvile fortunes! Arrgh!

Brickey, Walt and New Orleans Sq. are responsible for helping to preserve Heritage buildings everywhere. In the 50's and 60's a lot of old buildings were being knocked down. When the Mayor of New Orleans opened with Walt the Sq. he could see how much his own city was loosing it's heritage. So on his return home he made it harder for developers to get their building consents and permits. Later of course hurrican Katrina did not help in preserving buildings. What Walt did here ( he would'nt have known it) started a movement which continues to this day. Grande Central Station, New York is a prime example. Cheers, Chris Perry.

HEY BRICKEY! Can you tell us more about the Blue Bayou Restaurant? Was that purpose built with the Pirates ride or was it built before Pirates opened? Growing up in SoCal and going to Disneyland 2-3 times a year, I used to think (as a kid) that the restaurant was some sort of employee only place. It wasn't until much much later (and older) that I got to go and eat there, and wow what a dinner. It was soooo good as I remember it and got to sit right on the edge and watch the boats go by. My friends and I always visited that arcade. I still have a doubloon token from a machine there where we engraved the dumbest things we could think of.

I played all those games. And made a doubloon….which says WALT DISNEY LIVES. It has been in my pocket for 50 years.

I don’t know if this the right place to make suggestions. This channel has great analysis of what is driving the changes at Disneyland. My suggestion: make a trip over to Japan. Visit Tokyo Disneyland for 2 days and Tokyo Sea for 2 days. Not enough time to make a video, … I don’t think. I don’t know anything about that. Anyway, I believe taking the time to go in and physically observe these two parks will go a long way to further inform your future analyses. Don’t just look at images/videos of those parks. Invest in going there to take it all in with your own eyes. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Take it for what it’s worth.

"Shoot em" arcade games of the 1960s were electromechanical. Video graphics of the time weren't nearly advanced enough. A typical target was stamped metal with a pirate (or other image) painted on it. Targets would pop up and sometimes move while you shot at them. The most advanced ones might coordinate movie projections with the mechanics. Ironically, the 3-D video in Toy Story Midway Mania simulates those old mechanical games. I would love to find someone's home movie of the old New Orleans Square arcade games.

I still buy postcards when I travel. Many images that we could not get. Also, 1969 to today is 55 years, not almost 50.

I'd like to see you take on Knott's Berry Farm for a video, It still has the charm in Ghost Town, especially in summer time.

New Orleans Square, like Liberty Square, appear to not have any room for more attractions.

What if they took both of those stores and that center quiet space and made them into that pirates of the Caribbean bar/restaurant like what they were going to put in Disney world. Move pieces of eight across the way and get rid of Cristal d’orleans.

Sorry Brickey but these arcade games were NOT video games. Arcade games in that era were mechanical, almost always a variant of the pinball machine. Not even close to a console game or interactive videogame. That was still many years away.

Being a creative and a knowledge sponge I appreciate every one of your videos. I also love that you almost always put two of my favorite things in the same sentence. Those would be Disney of course, and SimCity. Speaking of are you aware that Will Wright claimed he created SimCity for people with a god complex. I bet Walt would have played it for hours at a time. It's a great escape from the real world. I've not yet been to Disneyland, but growing up in Florida I spent many days at Disney World. Thanks for the DL knowledge, and the bigger picture of Walt.
