The £55m signing of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan has transformed Newcastle's midfield and means they are serious contenders for the top honours this season.

I read an interesting article today about this signing and how nufc had it down as an aspirational signing rather than a likely one. Then a few things happened which changed the picture, so they pounced once the chairman gave the green light. This is a huge signing, and a midfield with Tonali, Bruno and Joelinton is mouth-watering.

The 2nd part of this video is so important. People recognising their gaps in ability and taking serious steps in addressing them is such an undervalued thing, so often people shy away from acknowledging them and just focus on improving their strengths. Great signing though, can't wait to see him play alongside Bruno G, fingers crossed we manage top 5 and don't go out too early in the CL.

Well Milan currently have a very weak squad relative to the level we’re used to seeing it at. Of course they’ve got wonderful players like Maignan, Leão and such, but I mean they’re starting Messias, Krunic… which isn’t so inspiring. Also they’re going to have a real striker problem without Giroud.

When I first went to see NUFC in 1991, there was no roof on the Gallowgate end or the Leazes end. We were in Division 2 (championship). The club was skint and we had to play the youngsters - Watson, Clark, Howey etc. Meanwhile, over in Milan, AC were tearing Europe a new one with van Basten, Gullit and the rest. Fast forward to 2023 and we've just bought Sandro Tonali from Milan. Mental!!

I think it definitely sets the tone for a new Newcastle legacy. This wouldn’t have been a consideration for any top flight player 2 years ago. Or even 12 months ago. Getting Tonali across the line and signing him is the first domino. This gives them leverage to show other top talent that they can recruit the best, and they’re to be taken seriously. I expect they will make another significant purchase before this window closes to cement themselves in the running for consistent European football in the future. The fact that the targets being leaked are also linked to the likes of Liverpool speaks volumes for how far they’ve come. 5 years from now they could be an absolute powerhouse, and Tonali signing could be the catalyst for that being true. Huge for their fans and the club. Congratulations.

The two main reasons we didn’t push for the title last year was lack of squad depth so we couldn’t change the game effectively with our bench players. The other was we lacked quality against low blocks the likes of Longstaff could really deliver real quality from that right half space. Tonali has a fantastic delivery on him, carries the ball well and commits defenders - huge Lomgstaff upgrade. Add to that Harvey Barnes and Frederico Chiesa who are heavily linked - watch out as we’ll cook this season and compete for trophies no doubt about it

We can't challenge for the title, but we will progress as a team and as a club. A top four finish would be amazing (it'll be harder in the next season) and progressing from the group stages of the ECL would be equally amazing. Oh! and a domestic cup run obviously.

We'll need all of the new signings just to keep a Champions league place. I don't see us finishing higher than 4th and the coming season will be tougher. Last season was a "perfect storm" of Toon's brilliance and other clubs sloppiness.

Ahh the wife's a Geordie, now I understand your video! Not just about the players that have been brought in, its also about the players Eddie has improved. Look at Joelinton, look at Schar, look at Krafth before that horrenous injury and Longstaff who had been frozen out by that muppet Bruce. The obvious improvement in Willock too and I could go on. He has got something extra out of all these players. He is an excellent manager, what a guy and the Toon Army love him 👍🖤🤍🖤🤍

Rory, you'll see on my channel that I'm a Mag of 43yrs. Its an astonishing signature to make, audacious and what I love about us, is that we haven't done the outlandish recruiting Keegan did 30yrs ago. I call him Steady Eddie because on top, gliding along smoothly, while the coaching team is paddling along tirelessly out of view. His first attitude to the existing players was focus on their strengths, asking them what they want to achieve. Looks at a glass half full, not look at the empty half.... How many employers would you work for if they had his approach? Oh and as for the Maddison snub? I'm sure Howe saw the lacklustre attitude Maddison showed in failing to help keep Leicester's PL status, nevermind wanting to earn £8M a year & knew "nah, not worth that amount" (nobody is).

The Premier League is going to be an absolute dogfight this year with the established 6 doing everything in their power to retain that by throwing money right, left and centre to signings and hoping they work. I think Newcastle will continue to just plug away keeping with their methodology it may take us another few years but i believe this project will be successful, c'mon the Toon.

Agreed. Newcastle beating the European elite to players like Tonali, Isak, Bruno and Botman shows how attractive they are to players now. And it's not just the money because some of the players they have signed tlike Trippier have taken pay cuts to go to Newcastle.

I'm a Newcastle fan and I get the impression that maybe even I don't appreciate how good this kid might be. I've never seen so much hate from rival fans, sport bible etc milking this story as if we've kidnapped him and he doesn't want to be there. Even though he looks just as uninterested in his official Inter photos. I guess we'll have to get used to that kind of spite. But after 15 years of absolute misery, I'll take that. Videos like this are making me evem more excited to see him in the team. We definitely have an very impressive midfield at this point.

Thanks for the video and your thoughts. I like the angle of NU going toe to toe with European heavyweights and managing to get their man. I think this also tells us about Tonali. As we know, ManU, Liverpool (Klopp’s a liar) City, Chelsea, Spurs and a host of others pay silly (and now unsustainable) wages. Tonali, apparently, isn’t a showy, self-obsessed social media junkie, like so many others. He’s a respectful, focused and hard-working young guy. He’s also FLUENT in English, so the NU player care team have less to do, and the transition to England will be easier. Tonali’s also from an area with similar weather to the North East and he’s played in one of the best defensive, and most technical leagues in the World. As you noted, Howe is looking for a sort of player, a player who is level headed and not up their own ar*e. This sort of player wants to grow, to develop and importantly to learn. Look at the resources available to Benitez. I know many say he was given nothing, but he had Schär and Almiron. He sold Lejeune, who was an amazing player….he let him go on loan. You see, Benitez is a manager. Howe is a coach and a manager. You need to be both. The manager is only deploying the resources in the optimum configuration. A coach is improving the resources. Imagine you’re Tonali. You see people laughing at Almiron, Schär, Joelinton etc. Last season, Newcastle, for a long time, had the best defensive record in all 5 elite leagues. It was against Arsenal, that we started to lose games. Look at the goal contributions of Almiron and Joelinton. They both hit double figures, and for Joe, he was often played in a more defensive central role at the start of the season. So Tonali, says to himself, “I’m a great player now, but I want to be a phenomenal player. Where will I get the best chance to develop? Liverpool? No, Klopp is a great tactician, but he’s self-obsessed and never recognises his own faults. Arsenal? Artefacts is amazing, but London is out, because I like a quiet life. City? ManU? Too many primadonnas demanding attention and thinking they’re the best. The only club that has a true culture based on unity and synergy is Newcastle. That’s where I’ll go.” If you think about Tonali, and I think about AC Milan fans here, he’s proved he’s a team player. He’s sacrificed himself so Milan can rebuild. That’s why Howe signed him and why he will be a massive success for NU.

I can understand people not liking’ the project’ out of fear against competition but let’s be man enough to say it as it is. The Saudis are smart and realizing they have to diversify to protect against a diminishing oil market. I can understand the human rights concerns, but no one balks at putting Saudi petrol in their car or remonstrates against the BILLIONS the UK do in trade with them each year.
