Nigeria is the 6th largest country in the world by population with nearly 220 million people. This is particularly interesting because Nigeria has about as many people as its 15 nearest neighbors combined despite being much smaller in area size. So why has Nigeria grown so much larger than other countries that share similar colonial histories, geographies, and sometimes even cultures?

They're not being attacked, no one's being attacked. Well except just a few communal clashes between herds and farmers every now and then right now it's somewhat stable (referring to South-East, South-West, North-Central & South-South, I know "South-South" isn't a geological point but it is in Nigeria, the Northern parts of Nigeria are still hampered with insecurity tho especially in places like Borno & Zamfara). The economy is currently in a major free fall tho according to some articles I read earlier and inflation has also been on the increase lately (18-22%) making life somewhat difficult for Nigerians and limiting the purchasing powers of the citizens to the very few. Footnote : In context to the video on whether Nigeria could become a superpower by let's say 2050, I honestly doubt it, a lot has to change for that to happen like the economy, security, and corruption. Also, the mass migration of the educated elites/people to other countries for a better working condition/ better wage is already hampering hard in Nigerian's educational/literacy rates with very few of the professionals actually staying. So regardless, whatever the population size is tomorrow. If those problems aren't solved sooner enough, then I seriously fear what would be of Nigeria in the next 26 years.

Good job on a complex subject! I spent a year of college in Nigeria. It was great! In history class, they said that malaria kept the British from moving in an taking land during the 1800's and early 1900's, the way they did in east and interior Africa - Kenya, Rhodesia. There, they took land and grew tobacco and other crops. The British stayed along the coast in West Africa, and bought and shipped out palm oil and other products. I'm not sure how this affected population growth, but it may have been a factor.

It's odd that you do not mention agriculture. The fundamental reason why countries such as Nigeria have such large populations, is because of the combined effects of geography and climate, and the types of crops that they have domesticated, that allows them to feed lots of people.

@@MAPS-dx5srI re-watched the video, He did mention agriculture, but very briefly. In per-industrial societies, agriculture is the primary reason why certain countries had such high population densities, and I don't think he paid enough attention to the unique history of agriculture in the region.

Geoff, a subject and video to consider is the Sahel region of Africa. Consider the weather pattern changes and increased rainfall in the "Nile/Blue Nile river regions. The Sahel will in due time become the "Bread basket" of Africa. I believe you'll find this subject matter interesting. Dig deep and find that Northern and North Western Africa was rather tropical at one time and may become so again. Cheers, Mate.

Superpower? 63% of persons living within Nigeria (133 million people) are multidimensionally poor living on less than $6 a day. Persistent inflation is at a 17-year high of 25.8%. Access to education and health it's the 7th lowest human capital index in the world. All levels of government and business is still irredeemably corrupt. They have a very long way to go to yet.

It can't be understated that Nigeria has one of the longest and most extensive history of agriculture and urbanisation in Africa. It is also one of the largest west African countries geographically, with much of the land being densely populated unlike the North western African nations (Niger,Mali,Mauritania) whose geography is largely grassland and desert.

I could classify myself as a middle class Nigerian citizen. Not reach not poor and could afford literarily anything within my class. I was once one of the people that support the breakaway of Nigeria according to the region dominant tribe which would be Yoruba in the Western Region, Igbos in the Eastern Region, Hausa in the Northern Region and the Middlebelt. After many studies and research, I realized the only catastrophe that would be the most greatest in Nigeria history would be the very day we break apart. Our population and cultural diversity is what make us unique and fascinating. We might be facing lots of challenges right now due to corruption and bad leadership, I’m very sure we will get there. We are still a very young state with promising future and I’ll tell you one of the most cheapest country to live in Africa is Nigeria. Not from statistics but from my own traveling experiences. With good leadership and accountability with proper distribution of wealth, we will attain our super power status. We are one of the most brightest and smartest mind not in Africa but in the world. Not only that, we are though and resilient. We only need just one step and the Nigeria growth will grow spontaneously.

Nigeria as it stands is still a regional superpower that does not exercise its powers but if forced to would be more than happy. We have done it before. I do not support breaking up for the sole reason that it will not serve the direct interest of the masses but that of the anglozionist empire and its 5th and 6th columnists together with their 4th estate of the realm. it would be a vicious circle. Do you wonder why the empire started an active hybrid war in 2008 and has since lost both politically and militarily in 2015? It is not coincidental. Nigeria truly expired in 2014 and from their game plan, it is to break Nigeria into parts using their underdogs. This failed during the Biafran War. The plan then was to create smaller but more controllable regions and indebted them massively as you have in Qatar, UAE, and even Jordan. This is the main reason their undergod Agui Ironsi stopped a regional government that was working in the interest of the people but not that of the puppet master. They have since failed. Nigeria honestly was never created for the people living within the borders of Nigeria. This is a fact. The reality is, the people in the boarders of Nigeria have been fighting to change the tide to favour them and you re absolutely right. Th purchasing power parity of the Naira is stronger than many European and American countries. That is a fact! Life expectancy, may be not so good but getting better than in the 80s. We will get there. I have said this about leadership: Nigeria is currently classified in my school of thought as a semi puppet state which is far better than a permanenet puppet state. What is missing is a Putin of Nigeria. We will get there eventually. It's a process and we are so close now than never ever!

Some of the reasons for the large population: Big land mass which is very fertile, suitable for agriculture all year round, no need for fertilisers so food is plentiful and quite cheap until recently with high inflation Abundant rainfall esp in the South, Middle belt; Culture, Nigerians are family oriented, you are expected to marry at a certain age and have children/family, a lady over 26 and unmarried wont rest from family pressure to settle down. 😂 abundant natural resources eg oil, gas, gold etc Multiple wives (polygamy esp among the muslims in Nortgern Nigeria, High fertility rate among the women- though its dropping in recent years better healthcare which has reduced child mortality rate, mass migration from neighbouring countries - result is about 30% of Nigeria s population consists of other Africans . There are other reasons but these are the few i can come up with

The real population is believed to be smaller. The Northern region has historically held more power and for longer since 1960. They supposedly inflate the regions pop for internal elections and for international aid.

The last census in Nigeria was over 10 years ago so most of the population figures are mere speculations. The real figure is smaller than speculated, more likely 160m, at most 170m based on numbers from phone sim registrations

Usually people of poorer countries have more children. Not just here but when Ireland was poor in the 50’s- 70’s. The baby boom period. Women gave birth to 6-10 children minimum. Same with China, India etc etc. Once a country become more educated, richer and a larger middle class. Family size decrease. The average size of Irish families is under 2 kids. Once African nations become richer and more educated. Family sizes will decrease too.

Correction at 11 minutes: The population of the Kano state is way more than 10 million. Many people mistake the Kano city (metro area) population with the population of the whole Kano state.

That's not correct Sir, check your data very well, according to the census 2006 Kani has the highest population with about 9.5 million people followed by Lagos. But now you are saying 4 million I don't know where you get your data, there's an error in that data of course

Hi Geoff, Thank you for the video and thank you for the effort. I commend you. However, as a Nigerian living in Nigerian and well acquainted with our history and some of those of our neighbours, I think your facts are not too well grounded. Like other commentators have said, you forgot to mention the Old Oyo Empire, which had a significant impact in shaping the entire southwestern region of Nigeria from Benin Republic (Dahomey) to Edo (Bini Kingdom), you left out the important Kanem-Bornu empire, Ijaw-Urhobo kingdom among a vast host of others. Also, I would think that your points on why Nigeria has more population than others is not well grounded. Sorry that I criticised you.

Kano has more han 15 million people as it has the highest birth rate in Africa. even 2006 census showed that Kano is the most populous city of the country with more than 9.4 million people. check your findings again.

Nigeria has more people than ALL Southern african countries combined!!!! This just made me realise how countries south of the equator are so sparsely populated!!!! Why do they have lower birth rates in the south. Eg Namibia has 2.5 million people only and botswana at 2.5 million as well... With south africa being the only country with a large population at 56million, which is still a bit low!!!!
