Mexico is a huge country. With nearly 130 million people, 22 million of which live in Mexico City, the country ranks 10th in terms of population. Despite the vast amount of people, however, there exists a large swath in the middle that has very few people relative to this size. And this area effectively cuts the country in half, from the the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. Here's why "nobody" lives in Mexico's Empty Belt.

My family lives close to there! In the state of Hidalgo. It's an indigenous town, the population exploded to 1000 recently. Yeah, it's that small. It's in the middle of a desert valley. It's pretty isolated. But it's close to a decent sized city named Ixmiquilpan, which my ancestors built.

Just a clarification. The New Spain map as shown in 2:38 is incorrect. The territory of New Spain was much larger including all of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and parts of Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wyoming. Also, all of Central America except Panama.

I make a small correction about the most populated cities, Ciudad Victoria is not the most populated urban area but the metropolitan area of Zacatecas with 409,000 people, now without considering the metropolitan area the third most populated city is Guadalupe and not Zacatecas with 170,000 and 130,000 respectively, still very excellent video explaining the geographical area where I live

I am from the Aguascalientes state, right below Zacatecas and the empty belt, and have many co-workers from there that commute everyday to Aguascalientes city (1-1.5 hour trip). I actually just spent a vacation going around the empty belt, from Zacatecas city to Real de Catorce, which is a mining ghost town. Both extremely beautiful, with awesome food and honestly super nice and cordial people, if rather serious/reserved. But true, on the highway there is gas shortage, no phone signal, barely any police presence and very few roadside stores or towns, etc. When you enter Aguascalientes from the north the contrast is very very noticeable.

@@Mike-kc5ew Because it’s true? Factories have brought people to the north but you’re vastly overestimating lol. Factories don’t bring millions. My family is from Coahuila, 3.1 million. The more populous northern state is Nuevo León actually which has a short border and none of the auto factories (those are in Tamaulipas)

With 21 habitants per square kilometer (Mexican average is 64) Coahuila ranks as the 6th least populated state in Mexico, as a Coahuilense I can say that cities and towns in my state are too spread, it takes hours to drive just from one town to a medium city, population in Coahuila is around 3.5 millions, but the state is big compared with other states .
@Mike-kc5ew
@Mike-kc5ew Ай бұрын
@@Anahi1991I'm certainly not claiming that Northern Mexico is the highest populated part of Mexico, but come on, it's certainly not the lowest populated either. There are 31 Mexican states, and the Federal District, and 6 of the states border the U.S.: Nuevo León (yes, barely borders, but it still does - it's the 7th largest Mexican state population wise at about 5.784 million), Baja California (the 11th largest at ~3.769 million), Chihuahua (the 12th largest at ~3.741 million), Tamaulipas (the 14th largest at ~3,527), Coahuila (the 15th largest and still bigger than half of the Mexican states at ~3.146 million), and finally Sonora (the 18th largest at ~2.944 million, and finally below the median population of all Mexican states). With those states, you do have a sizeable population in Northern Mexico at about 22,914,680, which is almost 17.5% of Mexico's total population. By all means there are more populated areas further south, but Northern Mexico still has a decent size. As far as listing the state by population density, that doesn't do any justice to how many million do live in Northern Mexico. It would be like listing the United States by population density, which people rarely do. As the most densely populated U.S. states are New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maryland (some of the smallest U.S. States). Texas and California don't even show up when ranking by density, until you're out of the top 10.

You don’t discuss that Mexico has a large area in the center that has a high altitude (more than 1600 meters to 2500 meters), because of this the area which is quite large has a very temperate climate. Otherwise Mexico would be extremely hot. Instead this area is hot during the day but quite fresh at night. That’s the main reason most mexicans (including myself), live here. Is more simple to explain, no indegenous people, the bigger cities up the north were built on a post-colonization era except a few exceptions (Monterrey, Saltillo, Hermosillo) and these newer cities were created by design for economical purposes, all border cities because US, railroad stops like Torreon, mining cities like Durango or Chihuahua.... main reason for the northern isolation is no indigenous people living in these places

I would have added Coahuila desert and Comarca (co-march or co-mark) Lagunera region to the belt. Hence, the importance of La Laguna, one of the youngest population areas in México. The importance of La Laguna is its logistics because of its position in the map. It is surrounded by empty regions.

Comarca means region in English. Your translations don't make sense.

@@charcossinagua There's no word in English for comarca. A comarca is the region between two areas ruled by two marqueses. The Nueva Vizcaya (Durango) march and the Nueva Extremadura (Coahuila) march.

It’s interesting how all big metropolitan areas in Tamaulipas border the “empty belt”.

The 3 largest are border cities, not in this belt. Not hard to figure out, that’s where the maquiladoras (US factories) are.

@@kaymillerfromTX the biggest metropolitan area in Tamaulipas is Tampico, which encompasses the 3 southern most municipalities of the state (Tampico, Madero and Altamira) and 2 additional municipalities in Veracruz (Panuco and Pueblo Viejo). If you pay attention to the map it deliberately leaves out certain southern municipalities of Tamaulipas, all three that make the Tampico MZ and what looks like the Mante municipality, which is boosts a population of about 80,000. It’s quite easy to figure out why Reynosa, Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo are left out of the “empty belt”, but it’s interesting how both the northern most and southern most municipalities of Tamaulipas are left out of the belt, hence why I made my comment. :)

@@juanperea2283 I guess you’re right, different sources say it’s the 1st and some 3rd lol. But either way, I think that’s because Tampico is on the coast and not in the mountainous belt he was talking about but I could just be giving him the benefit of the doubt with his maps maybe. Now that I’ve watched on my TV instead of my small phone, it does look weird that he included almost all of Tamaulipas 🤔

Even north of that belt is also sparsely populated(same goes for the very south)... Most people in mexico lived in the center of the country.

Aztecs are not real. It's the Mexica people that's just a horrible way to distinguish the post colonial region.
