I bought these back in November for my a3 as I do a lot of driving early in the morning on badly kept often flooded, often icy roads and I can not believe the amount of grip they offer me in the worst of conditions. Knowing they are also capable of getting me back home if it snows too is always reassuring. I don't plan to ever change from these tires!

We use the goodyear vector 4 seasons on several Cars for the last 10 years, on Honda Jazz for around 80.000 km, on a small Daihatsu they Did 70.000-100.000 km , and on our Toyota Urban cruiser more than 50.000 untill now. So on a small car the are very useful, they are Safe in Summer and Winter and last Long, on bigger(heavier )Cars they last a bit shorter, but you don’t have to change to Summer or wintertires. The gen 3 Mighty Even better, i only have expierienced the gen 1 and 2.

Great wee test. I live in Scotland, and I used to switch between summer & winter tyres - so many people (most people) have no idea the enormous difference a winter tyre makes once its gets colder, let alone when snow and ice appears. I then found Michelin Crossclimates a few years ago, and swear by them. They stay on all year round and are just so much less hassle. I firmly believe, in Scotland at least, that All Season tyres should be legal fitment on cars sold here and should be the "normal" tyre for everybody.

Man, I believe you can include the whole UK in your statement. Even though it's not as snowy nor cold outside of Scotland, but it's still way below 7 degrees Celsius on average for half of the year. In other cold countries like Germany and Belgium, it's a legal requirement to roll on winter tyres in winter. That's the UK's health & safety for you I guess... totally overkill when not needed, and completely ignored when necessary. SMH

I add this comment after reading some of the things written here. The main reason for ABS in any conditions is that it means the wheels are turning most of the time while trying to maximise the grip. One of the main reasons cars end up in the ditch (or wall) particularly in snow/wet is the lock up or complete loss of directional control. In this condition you cannot control the direction of the car with the steering, there are plenty of youtube videos where a car is gently drifting in snow ignoring the direction of the steering - because the driver has locked up the tires and is making no attempt (or turned off the ABS) to allow the car traction to return. The ABS in the dry or good conditions is there to maximize breaking - like pulse braking of old In very poor traction conditions, one of it main roles is to maintain steering and prevent loss of control of the back end by lockup - this is when you go off the road since you loose steering. Please understand the role of ABS and other control systems and why they are important for the 95% of drivers - the ordinary person, please don't turn it off and assume in emergency you can do better unless you are a rally driver.
@leetshots
@leetshots 3 жыл бұрын
i think you have confused abs with traction control
@Tom55data
@Tom55data 3 жыл бұрын
@@leetshots nop : they can use the same technology/pump on some cars. ABS is the pump operated use of brakes when there is a differential change in rotation of the wheels under braking. Traction control that uses the brakes by pumped operated when there is a differential change in rotation of the wheels under acceleration. Traction control additional alters the throttle setting (usually limited). The various acronyms used to describe these systems is the level of sophistication of the software that controls the differential use of the brakes to control stopping or going round corners. In most cars you can turn off traction control for snow as slippage of the tires is useful in many cases, in becoming normal that you cannot turn of ABS to prevent stupidity. It unwise to turn off traction control accept for snow. Of course, most people consider "traction control" and all its acronyms" and ABS as 2 different things, but they are generally the same mechanical, electronic and software components working under 2 different conditions.

I've used all-season tyres for almost 20 years. I live in hilly and snowy Yorkshire. I learned about them from my sister who lives in Germany, when they were almost unheard of here. They were hard to get until fairly recently, and at one point I had to get my sister to send one from Germany when I had a side wall puncture, and they weren't available in the UK. After that I was able to get them sent from Poland. Nearly always the Goodyear Vector 4, but have had Vredestein Quatrac. I've just changed my car. Tyres unfortunately are summer, with the front pair an OK brand, not that worn, but the back are very budget, very poor in the wet, probably useless on ice and snow, but are almost new, which I think the car dealer had put on. I just don't trust them. I'm going to change them to Goodyear Vector 4 in the next week or so.

Bought a set of these for my wife's VW CC a month ago. Prior to that the tyres were always Pilot Sports. The CC is like driving a sofa (even on Pilot sports), now on the Gen 3 all seasons it feels even more squidgy. I reckon I will get used to it ( wife didnt even notice) but I know that come the wet, slushy, snowy, sub 7c weather we generally get over winter, the car will be a hell of a lot safer for my wife with the children to drive around. Which is all that counts. I will say in downpours they are bloody good.

Many if not most of the fans of winter/summer switch drive 6 months per year on winter tyres (most of the time in the city with an extremely low average speed), on completely dry roads (like summer conditions), having a much longer braking distance than by using summer tyres or allseason tyres, just to be safer on that one single day of the year when they have snow or ice. OK, maybe I exaggerated with just one single day of the year when they have snow...let's talk about 2 days, 3 days, one week, for sure it is not 3 months of the year with winter conditions (half the period they use winter tyres) to at least be equal from the safety point of view...For Nordic countries it's another story, but what it is called a "winter" tyre for Nordic countries has nothing to do with what we call a "winter" tyre in the rest of Europe, almost completely different products. Better is the enemy of good = Winter tyres are worse than all-season tyres in most of the usual, normal cases. Not to mention the hassle to replace the tyres twice per year, the risks associated with replacing frequently the wheels (broken lugs, tyres getting older but not worn out) etc etc etc...all-season tyres offer also independence and peace of mind that, if you go somewhere, let's say in mountains and it will snow during the night, you don't have to carry on with you another set of wheels, fitted with winter tyres. But even if you carry on another set of wheels (which is absurd) you can't drive your car to the first tyre shop to replace the wheels because you are fitted with summer tyres and it's illegal to drive on summer tyres when the road is covered with snow or ice.

We have Goodyear vector gen2 all season tyres on my wife's Fiesta and I'm very impressed with them. Obviously being a small car it's prone to a lot of road noise and it seems quieter than the Maxxis tyres that were on previously. The grip is on and we had no issues in the recent snow. In fact I found myself going past people in SUV's that had summer tyres on which was satisfying. For a regular hatchback being used for regular duties I think all season tyres are the way to go. One thing to note though I think the tyres wear out quicker than a summer tyre. Certainly our last set of all season tyres only lasted 2 years and 12k on the front of a gently driven little hatchback. We could perhaps have stretched it out longer, but all season tyres with low tread seems rather pointless.

I had a 59 plate Vauxhall Corsa for years that I kept as a cheap run around to and from work, that car got me through the worst snow over the last 10 years where other cars were sliding off road, stranding drivers etc. I was told it was due to the slim tyres being better at gripping the snow... I've traded up now and had to retire the Corsa but I'm buying all season tyres for both my Duster 4x4 and the wife's Mokka.

I had Michelin Cross Climate 2's fitted to my ID.3 just 3 weeks ago. After a snow and ice covered few days (currently 3rd December 2023) in England I would say that this was the best decision that I have made for a very very long time. The only thing that I would add is that the garage (a VW approved independent) set the tyre pressures at 30 psi all round even though the settings should be 36psi all round. Naturally I adjusted them but remain disappointed with the garage.

Very interesting comparison - particularly interested in your comparison with your R estate on full winters (I've probably mentioned on Twitter, I have exactly the same Dijon + winters on my R estate & used them on my old Mk7 GTD too). I'd be interested in trying these all weather tyres (or Michelin CrossClimate+) on my Wife's A3 - but not sure it's worthwhile, as it has 19" wheels with 235/35/19 tyres (same as an R on 19"s)! Just being a cheapskate & trying to avoid buying another set of wheels 🤣 - already have 4 19" VW Spielberg alloys/tyres in my parents garage! Been a big believer in Winter tyres for a while - I do live in the Highlands though! They made a huge difference to my old B6 Passat estate (I could actually drive it!) & worked well for me.

Good real world test video - thanks! I fitted Vector 4 seasons gen 2 a month ago - a Black Friday bargain from Blackcircles. Much better on the gti than the Potenzas in this cold weather, as you would expect. Only drawback is some tyre noise unlike the gen 3 reviewed here - although only noticeable at around 30 mph and in higher temperature say above 3 deg C. The ride is noticeably less harsh that the Potenza (both on oem 18in wheels btw) but will still take a bit of fun with a heavy right foot - in the right conditions obviously!

Nice review. I have been using winter tyres for about 10 years now. I put a set of Michelin cross climate on my mothers car. Personally I prefer the best in both worlds on a performance car. I use Michelin super sports 4 s in summer and a set of nokians in the winter. Yes sometimes a pain when it comes around to swapping. But the performance and safety outweigh the inconvenience for me. I believe all season tyres have come on a lot in recent years. However id rather have premium summer tyres underneath 400bhp on a warm wet day. For everyday day driving in a "sensible" car, a set of all season's are a no brainer.

I’m all for new technology but what has been frustrating over the past 10 years or so is cars have become more safer, easier to drive, and the average joe doesn’t appreciate this and i feel this encourages really bad driving styles that I see more and more these days. People accelerating hard and braking HARD in short distances. People sitting on the outside lane on a motorway etc. I feel all these safety features including good tyres in the snow will just cause more idiots on the roads in the future.

I don't normally comment on videos but I have been looking for tyres like these for a while now but I must have some odd tyre size on my Skoda VRS 230, 225 35 19s although some say 235 35 19s will be ok but none of these All Season type tyres with good reviews do the tyres I need....bloody annoying!

Hi interested in these or Michy cross climates , you mentioned a new law in 2024 for driving abroad ? At least once a year I drive to a ski resort normally France , I think you need to have M+S tyres as a legal requirement in the mountains at present? Be interested to know about new law & the three peak sign on the sidewall Thanks

4wd is pointless on summer tyres in snow. you cant get traction with no grip. as the guy in the land rover discovery i overtook in my 2wd golf in deep moorland snow will no doubt attest. i assume he got out eventually when the snow melted.

@volkswizard
@volkswizard 3 жыл бұрын
DO NOT MIX THESE TYRES ON A CAR! The reason for this is as follows - in this video I turn the steering left and right while driving along to show that the front end still bites. If you have normal tyres on the back that momentum will unstick them very easily and you will have some very bad oversteer moments which is probably worse than understeer on 4 normal tyres. I get having them on the front gives you the traction and most of the braking but you can get lift off oversteer on a car with the same level of grip front and rear, to up the front grip and not the back is a terrifying though!

@volkswizard
@volkswizard 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sid. I thought the 1.5 eTSI R line would be a sweet car because it had a decent chassis which it does but engine response is pretty dull. Also the spec is bit poor, single zone climate, no voice control to control climate which is quite important with no knobs. On the plus side it looks good, the seats are comfy and it's super economical for a petrol car. Also it's got a dry clutch DSG rather than the wet clutch of the more powerful cars and it can smell a bit of hot friction material even when not driving it hard. What it really needs is a low power output version of the GTI engine with wet clutch DSG , 180 PS would be nice

@@volkswizard - interested in your DSG comments. I had a Mk5 with dry-clutch 7-spd DSG. My Mk7 has wet-clutch 6-spd DSG which I much prefer as I feel it is very much more up to the job of dealing with power and dealing with slow/stop-start/creep situations. I actually prefer the fewer gears too as I find it more interesting/involving to drive :-)

Hi Andrew for the 3 days over a typical winter we get a decent covering of snow I can't see why I need these all season tyres, having to fork out around £400 quid for tyres and then paying the same amount for rims as well it gets expensive. As you mentioned in your vlog if you live in the north York moors or the highlands of Scotland then you need them but where I am in the Midlands I wouldn't bother.
@squadmeta
@squadmeta 3 жыл бұрын
And that’s the mistake, they are cold weather tyres and perform much better than a summer tyre below 7c. It’s also important to note that summer tyres wear faster in very cold conditions, the rubber goes so hard it scrubs off faster. All season tyres are winter tyres with less siping to give them better dry handling, except for the Michelin CrossClimate which is a summer biased tyre made to work in winter. I haven’t used a summer tyre in winter for the last 10 years, and never would again.

Really the only good 4 weather tire is the Michelin Cross Climate 2. None of the others are nearly as good in snow or ice. They are close to a real snow tire in performance and much better on dry and wet than snows.
@JohnSmith-se5vo
@JohnSmith-se5vo 9 ай бұрын
All seasons are for all weather, not just snow and ice. If you focus in one area, eg. The snow/ice, then you compromise in othwr areas. While the crossclimate 2 are better on snow. The vector 4 are better in the rain. The UK gets more rain than snow so the vector 4's are more suited for the UK climate.
