I spent a day in Oslo before traveling to Svalbard, and noticed that there were Teslas everywhere. Upon further investigation, I learned that the Norwegian government heavily incentivizes ownership of electric cars: Tesla doesn't pay a sales tax on the models it sells, electric car owners are exempt from automobile tolls, and they can charge their vehicles for free. The catch is that Norway funds these initiatives through its sovereign wealth fund, which is almost entirely comprised of profits from Norway's oil and fossil fuel exports.
Vox Borders is a new international series focused on telling the human stories that emerge from lines on the map. Johnny will travel to six border locations to produce a final set of documentaries. Hey everyone: this dispatch video is part of the Vox Borders project. I'm visiting six places around the world to investigate the human impact of borders, and those six videos will be released in fall 2017. In the meantime I'm making these vlog style shorts. If you want to follow my travels, the best way to do it is following my FB page: facebook.com/johnnyharrisvox and signing up for the newsletter at www.vox.com/borders-email. I'll be asking for video ideas, feedback on the project, and answering questions as it unfolds. -Johnny

I am Chinese living in Australia. I just went back to China in Dec 16 for a visit. What surprised me was that, these days, even in China, there are lots of electric taxi and share bicycle everywhere in the City. However, on the other hand, Australia as a developed county, has non of these. Whats more, government keeps pushing up public transit cost, giving less incentive for people to use these public transportation. Shame

maxhng - Ihave to ask, being that you're from China, Is your comment State Sponsored? Are the Australian transport costs as much of a bad joke as say, State Intervention control and suppression of Chinese local elections? Enjoy your big family in Oz, perhaps you're the person to solve the transport costs, you'll find a willing and open government to help you with any questions. Good Luck

burtlangoustine1 I wish my comment is state sponsored. I have to agree with you that suppression of freedom of speech in China is bad. However saying so that is entirely another issue. I have not been back to China for six years. It has really changed and to be better. That's why more and more overseas Chinese is moving back to the country. You have to be open minded and don't stick with old Chinese stereotypes. Plus, should a progressive country like Australia contribute to a better future for mankind and environmental friendliness? To your big Chinese family comment, I am the only one who is in Australia as Australian government would like me to pay crazy amounts of money for them to immigrate to Australia. If I do not pay up, the waiting list is more than 20 years.

Hahaha indeed, if the Dutch government had put all the money from the selling of their natural gas in a fund (like Norway did), the yearly interest on such a fund would be larger than the current revenue of the gas fields. Actually Norway doesn't use the fund itself (or at least not to a great extend) but rather uses the interest generated by the fund to subsidise these projects.

@@freedomisbrightestindungeons No, we are rich because Denmark chose the wrong part of the sea when dividing borders, leading to us reaping the benefits of all the oil we found in the 1960s. And also because unlike Saudi Arabian countries, our government actually used the money to invest in stocks, and also to invest in the people. The government is also thinking long term compared to a lot of oil countries, there's a limit to how much oil Norway draws each year, and almost all the oil (if not all) is owned by the Norwegian government instead of privately owned companies. So yeah, it's because we got lucky, but also because we played it smart with investment and long-term thinking :)

Instead of spending our oil money directly, we put all the profits into a state run fund called "Statens pensjonsfond utland". We have a rule where we are allowed to withdraw 4% of the profits of this fund every year to spend on infrastructure. The reason for the 4% rule is to avoid inflation and keep the market stable.

Don't take too much of what we norwegians say seriously. We are spoiled to the point of delusion, with only 5 million citizens spread out over the landmass equivalent to Germany lol. No matter where you are in Norway, you can just walk 1 kilometers in any direction, and you're in some small forest, park or hill, we probably have the largest amount of national parks as well relative to a country's total landmass. The political debates are exaggerated and petty, because everyone knows there aren't any real problems, all the parties basically say the same things framed differently and get along with each other like friends, even if the are "supposed" to being in opposition. Just the sheer amount of people living in USA, India, China or even countries with lower population cause problems we don't even taste because we are so few. The average norwegian knows very little about how hard life is elsewhere in the world and the solutions they need

As with any country there are political forces at play. On one side we are proud of trying to take care of our environment and pulling our weight, and on the other side most of the government here consists of economically conservative bureaucrats that are having a very hard time getting themselves to support other industries that will one day replace our dependence on oil income. One thing is clear: we can't suddenly stop selling oil. Economic conservatism is very good at building infrastructure that is expensive and requires little thought, and without having an income to support that infrastructure we will be set back 50 years. So we do intend to phase out oil, hopefully, and we do realize the irony. But things take time. We had our clean energy before we struck oil. I think most people here are relieved that oil is starting to become useless just by the advancement of technology and market forces, since that means we'll eventually have no choice but to adapt to it, which will force our politicians to actually act. All in all it boils down to: good people, bad corporations and politicians.

People that work in the city would probably be teased by their co-workers if they would insist on driving to work ... because we know how much egoism is required for that. In Norway there is this island called Finnøy located in Stavanger. This island is the place in the world with the highest amount of electric cars per citizen. The reason being to get to the island, you need to drive through an underwater tunnel. In the end of the tunnel there is a toll station which is super expensive (about 15$). But with an electric car, you don't need to pay this fee. Therefore almost everyone who lives on this island has sold their car for an electric car.

Global warming is real. It is also real that fossil fuels has lead to a reduction of 99% in seventy years in climate related death. Fossil fuels make us safer from climate. Also car batteries are made from cobalt that is mined in Congo by children exposed to irradiation. How do you feel about that?

I would say the biggest part of having an electric car in a big city like Oslo here in Norway is that you dont pay toll. In Oslo the toll is huge, and when you can bypass that, you'll save a ton of money.

Norway: Smart enough to create an oil fund worth $ 1 trillion and only spend the money on its citizens, give benefits to those who drive electric cars, 98% of the energy is green, has great infrastructure, it is the happiest country in the world and it is one of the most modern and well-informed countries in the world. Still, weed is illegal and possession of just one gramme will get you a $1200 fine.
