As a mechanic I would say if you're financing or buying a used vehicle, pick inline. They are simply much more reliable. Scotty forgot to mention in boxer engines, gravity is constantly pushing the pistons downwards so the bottom side wears out unevenly and faster than the top side so the piston rings wear out on the bottom end, thus the infamous oil leaks boxer engines are known for. The bigger ones (2.5L) wear out even faster because of the added weight. I worked in an auto parts recycling plant and we just couldn't keep the Subaru 2.5's stocked. They'd sell within days of being pulled.
@Hartbreak1
@Hartbreak1 3 жыл бұрын
That’s true but there’s a counter for that, Subaru cars have less depreciation than similar cars. So if someone wants a car for the short term and then wants to sell, the Subaru is the better option. But if you want a car for a very long time then yeah inline 4 is the way to go.
@lophilip
@lophilip 3 жыл бұрын
Except for a few model years, Subaru do not have oil burning issues. They have issues with head gaskets (NA versions) and spun engine bearings (mostly turbo charged variants, but NA suffer from that too). The spun bearing is why there is a demand for your recycled engine.

Hi Scotty, this is a fantastic analysis. I believe the Inline 4 are better, every car will need maintenance and parts replacement someday; cheap and easy fix just can't sound any better. Inline 4 cylinder's also deliver smooth rides, if you don't rev'em like a maniac.

Baggie Metro: But like Scotty said, it depends on what your priorities are, which he made clear. I would certainly want to use an inline 4 for my daily driver, which I want to last many years and be economical. OTOH, now that I'm retired and can afford and have the time to enjoy a "fun" car with more performance and better feel for nice rides in the country, a Boxer engine would be more appropriate for such a car, if I didn't mind paying for it. It's not like I'd be putting lots and lots of miles on such a car in a decade or so.

Porsche designed the car to deliberately require dropping the engine. With a car that does 200mph, you want that thing in top athletic condition. Imagine blowing your clutch or steering/suspension components at 200mph - rear wheels get loose, you lose control of the car. Saw a video when they put a 911 in for a service. The clutch plate was worn and still usable. But not good for high speed travel. Same for the water pump and other components.. They replaced the clutch plate, the water pump, did a tune-up, cylinder head gasket, new radiator hoses, timing belt, tensioner, etc. Any other vehicle it would've been just the simple service. On the other hand, those cars also weren't doing 200mph either.

I replaced the plugs early at 66,000 miles and changed the transmission fluid every 33,000 miles. I flushed the coolant and bled the brakes.i replaced all four brake pads, cut the rotors, and replaced all four tires. That’s it. No issues to date. The plan is to get over 250,000 miles with no major engine or transmission repairs.

With the Chevy Cobalt, it runs smooth, and is not hard to work on, also the car and its parts are not expensive, also the performance is decent as daily, but for more performance Cobalt SS is the way to go. Earlier generation Cobalt SS came Supercharged, and later generation Cobalt SS came Turbocharged. The Pontiac G5 GT is pretty much a Cobalt SS without the forced induction, but has all else, more or less. The Pontiac G5 is Pontiac's version of the Chevy Cobalt, pretty much a rebadged Cobalt.

Great video to explain the engines for people that do not know a lot about them . As a motorcycle rider that owned a number of V-4 engines , I always wondered why no mass produced cars had them . Cost would be the main reason I think . Smooth compact design would be great . I often thought of putting a Honda V-65 Sabre engine in a tube framed Geo Metro with a narrowed Nissan 240 rear end . Lucky for me I talked myself out of such a project .
