After years of hesitating, I have taken the plunge and entered the world of resin 3D printing. I had solid reasons for not buying one, but they have diminished as the technology has gotten cheaper and better. Is now the right time for you to consider picking up a printer? Watch and find out!
The printer I bought is an Anycubic Photon Mono 4K:

The resin I am using is Anycubic's plant-based resin:

I bought a mars 2 in 2020. We were all stuck at home cause of the pandemic and I had nothing better to do. I hated it. The resin I had smelled like ass, the alcohol used to clean it made me nauseous, my prints kept failing. The film in the vat punctured and spilled resin all over the screen. I got fed up and returned it within two weeks. Fast forward two years. I bought a mars 3 pro, set it up near a window with a fan at the back of my apartment, switched to water washable resin, and had two fails out of an entire kg bottle due to moving the machine and not leveling it. I think the technology and STL creators are just getting better very quickly.

This man speaks truth yall. Stumbled on this video after I got my exact same printer setup from Anycubic and Resin combo. Printer has been worth every penny and I've printed close to 2k worth of smurfs with about 3/4 bottle of 1kg resin. Smell wise, just be mindful and quite literally don't leave any resin out in the open and smell is borderline negligible.

I’m literally in the same boat as you, just a week or two behind. I was on the fence about buying a printer for a while. I saw the anycubic sale and my 4k is coming this week. I’m even going to be starting with the eco resin. It’s reassuring to see someone made the same judgment as me and is being successful.

Taking the power of our imagination, and putting that power back in our own hands, as opposed to the hands of the companies who treat our FLGS's like garbage... I'm all for it. Creating our own miniatures for our own games for our own enjoyment. All in.

Anybody complaining about noise (or long print times) from a resin printer has never ever used a FDM printer. I know it's been said below, but if the smell from cleaning the prints bother you. A Wash&Cure station will neutralize that "fully". Also, by using the same brand, you can put the build plate into the cleaning vat, which almost totally removes manually handling the uncleaned resin. The biggest downside for me, with resin printing. Is 1) the smell (which modern printers and filters help a lot with) and 2) the dangers in uncured resin themselves. Would love to move my printer/s to a fully ventilated room, but, it is what it is atm. (: Can't say i've ever tried that resin, but will give it a whirl.

Nice thing that you started 3d printing. I think its pretty great 🥰But be careful you can become addicted to it. I already bought my 2nd printer after 1 year😂

I can definitely see how that is a risk. Thus far, I'm managing to keep it to what I can reasonably paint in the near future. We'll see if that holds 😅

Wash & Cure stations are well worth it. I think the AnyCubic one is both in one machine (Elegoo is two separate machines). The printer should have a mode to harden the bottom layer of the resin vat, so you can get any particles that might be left over in failed prints. Or you can strain it with a coffee filter back into the bottle. You can also easily dispose of resin by leaving it out in the sun to cure, and then just recycle if available. No need to ever have to dispose of liquid resin, ever.

The Anycubic wash station is a separate tub. I ordered a couple of sealable pickle containers with removable baskets. They work nicely. I may eventually get the official one.

My Elegoo Mercury Plus is a Wash+Cure in one machine, it has a removable tub for the cleaning solvent. I think it just depends on the model you get.

Based on conversations with folks who were earlier adopters, it has definitely gotten easier. I'm sure I can optimize my settings further, but I'm rather pleased with what I'm getting at the moment.

Advice needed ! Is a 3D printer able to give you as much cuztomisation as GW minis ? I like kitbashing and being able to mix and match stuff, is it still possible with a 3D printer ? Very interesting video, i'm actually getting back in the hobby recently and eventhough i'm more capable of buying minis on my own, comparing buying a 180$ miniature vs. an investment of 300$ for a 3D printer is getting more and more obvious. Thanks for the honest review ! I like how people are just passionate about this hobby and overall friendly.

The ability to customize models is entirely dependent on which files you're using. Some companies, like One Page Rules, have loads of options for arms, heads, etc. Most, however come as one piece. The other thing to consider is the ability to print specific bits. Places like Cults3D have loads of replacement bits for existing GW kits. I printed off a batch of chapter-specific shoulder pads, heads. And other things for a new space marine kill team last night.

Printy bois!! UNITE!! ha ah yeah the 2K printers are enough as well, not a huge difference tbh but the 4K ones all seem to have bigger plates than most of the 2K ones :-) I got the Mars3 pre ordered it so got it at 250 euro almost a year ago and it is AMAZING! for me have all my settings done around the end of day one or day 2. I print everything! at .03 layer level, it takes a little longer but the smoothness is more than worth the little extra time and everything is crisper as well.

Thanks for this, I've been on the fence for a while, and still am. The thing that worries me is my tech skills, how hard is it to learn the slicing software? To give context, I've taught myself how to edit photos in Photoshop, so I'm not a technophobe, but I do worry about having a massive learning curve, after spending £300 on equipment

With the ability to import settings in Lychee, I was able to start a successful print in less than an hour. In my limited experience, it's rare to run into an issue more complicated than Photoshopping an image.

So what printer and tools do you recommend for starting out on a budget?
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop Жыл бұрын
My experience is limited to the Anycubic Photon Mono 4k, but I've been very happy with it. It regularly goes on sale for just under $200. For tools, I'm honestly still working out what's best for me, but I bought a $25 UV lamp that I use with a turntable I already owned for curing and a couple of sealable plastic pickle jars with removable baskets for washing.

question about ventilation, do you have any tips or advice? are fans enough or you do ventilate directly outside?
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop Жыл бұрын
I live in a place without AC, so I already have a box fan in my painting area. I just point it toward the open window across the room. I will have to figure something else out for winter. You don't want the printer itself exposed to sunlight from a window. It has an anti UV cover, but I'm guessing it may not stand up to direct sunlight.

@@MTFTabletop I've only been using water washable resin, and I've not have any issues that were not my own mistakes. I also bought a wash and cure station after a year of using a homemade DIY lightbox, and it makes a world of difference. The water washable brand I use is RICH-OPTO and I use the clear or clear colored and get great results.
