There is No Excuse for these nurses behavior!!!! They are Jealous because someone other than them graduated from nursing school. Insecure and not realizing there is enough work for all. Management rarely helps (they are friends with veteran nurses).You get off easy because you are male But thanks for the video

Yes, we need more male nurses. I would rather work with all males personally. I just get along with males better because of the lack of cattiness (mostly). Now, if you get too many males together, they get just as dramatic as the females.

Bama girl awesome, so how many times have you actually stood up for a male nurse co-worker who was on the receiving end of some good old fashioned discrimination by one of your female buddies? ( publicly or privately) did you scold them for being bitches?...

Risk's page I haven't seen it happen in the nursing field yet as I am just beginning as a second career. I sure as hell would though. I never have a problem defending myself or anyone else. I sure hope you aren't a nurse though. Seeing as how you just spoke to a stranger, I wouldn't want you anywhere near a family member or a patient of mine and can't say I would be able to defend you.

From what I have seen, male nurses (and male student nurses) seem to get treated really well. They are always encouraged and dare I say even babied by female nurses and clinical instructors. Maybe because a lot of them find it refreshing to see some men embracing the profession.

I agree, my friend is a nurse and she tells me that male nurses (student, new grad and nurses) are treated better than female nurses. I think it's the nature and the nursing environment that young nurses are suffering from bullying!

why nurses eat their young....... hahaha I`ve had personal experience with this as a patient. when I was 18 I was in a motorcycle accident and broke my arm in several places as a result nerves were pinched and I had fingers that felt EXTREMLY cold ad painful, as a result I was becoming some what miserable and yes regretfully hostel. a younger nurse came in and wrapped a warm wash cloth around my finger tips only( maybe not the right thing to do) this gave me a huge amount of relief and stopped the pain enough for me to relax and calm down. upon finding this out the older nurse decided to start yelling at the younger one on the floor for what she had done, unfortunately for the older nurse she also did this within earshot of me, needles to say I made one friend and one enemy that day and paid for it with a few extra needle stabs that were unnecessarily hard but it was worth it I made my point and stood up for a nurse that helped me

As a new grad, I always went out of my way to let older nurses know that I respected their experience and looked up to them. The ones who were nice appreciated it. The ones who hated younger people, it just made no difference-- they were brutal.

People will only do what you allow them to do to you. I've had several attempts made on me and immediately let them know that not only was their attitude unwanted but also unnecessary. You cannot speak to people any way you want. As a nurse you come in and drop your problems at the door and drive on. I've never attempted to bully or intimidate new nurses and I wouldn't allow that to happen to myself. You always have those few old burnt out nurses that have these crappy attitudes towards you and the patients. I can respect their position and seniority but not at the price of being disrespected or feeling bullied. NOT OKAY! I hope new grads stick up for themselves instead of just sucking it up and tolerating this kind of unprofessional behavior.

But when they do that are they forgetting what it was like to be a student or new grad? We don't know everything...Nurses who work for 5+ years still don't know everything. I've heard experienced nurses say they learn something new everyday yet they think it's okay to rip a new grad apart for not knowing something or forgetting something they do know bc their nervous?? It's NOT helpful. We already have very little confidence in ourselves so when they do that it just makes it worse. How about talking with us and teaching us why they do the things they do instead of beating us up about it. If I've learned one thing as a student it's how to NEVER act when I'm a nurse. It's very petty, unprofessional and unnecessary. I want to be able to teach students how to be better, not remind them of how much they don't know.

They are the same types who will take care of dying, icu covid patients but turn around on fb and say how its all a conspiracy and refuse to take the vaccine.

Yes this happen and Nurses need to start being Nurses to their young and not eating them. I suffered through it my first job and after 6 months I left. I could never treat anyone the way I was treated. I am so glad more men are going into nursing, I was in the Navy and worked for the VA the last 15 years of my career. I worked with many males RN who were some of the best nurses ever. I never felt that I could not ask them for help or likewise give them help. It is not a female profession it is a Nurse profession. I never cared who was on my side during a shift as long as they pitched in and we all cared for the patients. I had good relationships with all of them and loved them to death.

I am a male nursing major currently. I will hopefully in a year be in nursing school. But learning that new nurse grads are bullied and beaten down by their elder nurses is really frightening to me. I've never heard of this "nurses eat their young" until this video. I would never in a million years treat someone so poorly, let alone one of my own colleagues. Can anyone with experience in the nursing field tell me if this only occurs in hospitals? Because as far as I know, being a nurse in a hospital is the hardest and most stressful place to be an RN, rather than being an RN in a doctor's office.. or does this occur wherever I am a nurse?

It happens in all kinds of places, especially the medical field. It was definitely like that when I was working as a certified Pharmacy Tech. The sad thing is, it doesn't matter how ballsy you are. When you have your job hanging over your head you have to keep your mouth shut and push on. The good news is that there will be a day when you prove yourself and earn respect. Then, it's like the whole fog lifts. You won't always be the new nurse. It is too bad people do not realize that by bullying, yes that's exactly what it is, that they are putting patients lives at risk. When you are in a constant state of anxiety and someone is looking for you to screw up, you do. If the nurse manager is doing her job, she will watch for this unprofessional behavior and disabling the offenders.

You are definitely right about the female drama. My mom wasn't a nurse (she was vice president of a greeting card company) and she always told me that she would rather work with a room full of men than one woman. It had gotten so bad for her that she just walked out and the president followed her to our house and begged her to come back. It's sad. Why do many women have to be like that? I'm a CNA and future RN and there's only a small handful of women where I work that are nice. The rest are not. I didn't mean for this to be so long. Thanks for your video, it was very informative.

@mindthedrawings

"Estrogen drama?" Didn't you go to college? How could you have an education and refer to human beings in such a callous way? Sexism in the nursing field is a huge problem (towards men and women) and you are contributing.
@linktome6667
@linktome6667 10 жыл бұрын
I assume a female doctor, 30 years ago might have said something like,..the boys club or testosterone-fest, etc.,..and she would have been correct. It wouldn't have been callous, it would have been utterly true. The same logic applies today in nursing. Hopefully it will change when gender demographics even out. And by the way,..I'm being kind,..most female nurses use much more derogatory language to describe it.
@mindthedrawings
@mindthedrawings 10 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Female doctors thirty years ago were rare, and almost didn't exist. And I'm sorry, but I'm tired of hearing about how "hard" it is for male nurses. I know I've never been mistaken for a doctor because of my gender. I know that the males I've worked with get promoted faster than the women. I also know that the average male nurse STILL gets paid more than the average female nurse with the same experience, so don't tell me how hard it is to be a male in this profession. Also, just because you know women who agree with your degrading opinions doesn't make them less sexist. It makes those women sexist.
@linktome6667
@linktome6667 10 жыл бұрын
That's the point I was making, that female doctors were rare and hence had a hard time with the "boy" culture of medicine. And I agree with the points about men getting promoted more and such. As far as the sexist comments,..some sexist comments unfortunately are true. As far as men having it hard, I only meant in the sense of the current culture of nursing: men & women are different, so there will always be difficulties for either in a field dominated by one sex.
@mindthedrawings
@mindthedrawings 10 жыл бұрын
Saying some sexist comments are true is like saying some racist comments true. Just because my black friend likes watermelon doesn't mean all black people love watermelon. Male nurses create more drama than they realize. Studies have been done that show that male nurses have a hard time adjusting to the field, not because of the female dynamic, but because they don't like having to work with women, period. They don't like female bosses, think they can do the job better, and don't like being told what to do by women. More to the point, they don't like when women control anything.

As a male RN I was never bullied or eaten. My preceptor was a bitch for lack of a better word and I gave it back to her so she backed off. She always made snarky comments because I had my bsn and she didn’t. If you get snark, throw the snark back at them.

First off I love your video and it was so educational! I am currently a male CNA and I live in Florida. I am also currently in college doing my prerequisites for nursing with four left to go out of seven. Working as a CNA I have witnessed this out of older nurses towards new nurses and it is a real problem! I can tell you tho working as a CNA once these new nurses get let go on the floor and if they have never been a CNA they're the worst assholes ever! Not all of them but many of them are! The nurses who have worked as CNA's almost always have mad respect for us! So I feel like we are the young for the nurses that have never had our job position! This is my belief that you shouldn't even be able to be a nurse unless you have done at least 6 months or more as a CNA! You need to start from the real bottom before you move up! College isn't the bottom! This is something that should be applied to every state! So going into nursing after 10 years of CNA work I know what a vile mess I'm getting into because I am already in it! The only reason I want to be a nurse is because I love the patients and I have had the time and experience to really know why I'm even doing this.

I have been a nurse for 24 years. My experience is that nurses eat their young for a multiple of reasons also. 1. Lack of professional recognition in the workplace 2. Fearmongering-"That nurse is going to get recognition for less than I do already" perpetuating conflict between nurses by administrators toward the nurses who suck up and rat out their peers 3. Power hunger frustrated (micromanagers) 4. Poor self esteem-the mentor nurse has no self esteem so she takes it out on the newbie (pecking order). P.S. I work with some amazing male nurses from CNA to FNP. But I also have experience with the administration at my hospital picking men out of the staff who have poor work ethic and or little experience and placing them in administrative positions solely because they are men. Our CNO will clearly state his agenda is " To put men in administrative roles historically held by women". I am sorry but career advancement should be based on the hard work you demonstrate, willingness to learn and not on your gender.

Health care has highly educated individuals, with the most ego, pride, and most unforgiven, critical, toxic people. Education builds position not character or manners. I am surprised how many people agree with this video, yet there continues to be no change in the field. Which is why I left the hospital (pool of sharks) to open up my own practice (pool of dolphins). My friends who continue to work in the hospital continue to complain how toxic it still is in the hospital. Professionals being unprofessional with each other. Toxic environment shouldn't be excused, should know better as "educated people". Hope this video reaches more people.

Hey NurseMendoza, I'm Tony, a male nurse in Australia. I have just watched your video and I agree on all that you say. Too much Oestrogen(Estrogen) in one room tends to get a little smelly. Not a foul smell, but a fishy smell. You never know what they intend when they say 'I love your hair'. It could mean 'bitch your hair is shit but I am being polite because I pity you' or 'i love your hair'. I am certain that male nurses have to treat the situation of working with heavily experienced nurses with great care. I am only 24, and working with female nurses that are 40-55, I tend to suppress my normal self enough to produce a good impression. An impression that makes them think: "He reminds me of my child" or "He's so polite and innocent". And this totally works for me with all nurses that I have encountered. Other male nurses I treat like brothers as we are bundled into one big shoe. I would also sacrifice a moment of leisure to help others as I believe that nurses should stick close. I believe male nurses act as a bonding substance to help nurses get along. We provide contrast for female nurses to bond with each other, and provide relief from each other at the same time. I am intentionally being sexist but it truly is natural. Keep up the great videos. Cheers mate. Tony.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but the comment about how estrogen makes a dramatic and hostile work environment: totally uncalled for. And also not true. Doctors are still predominantly a male demographic and they cause so much drama and treat some of their patients and nurses in a very inappropriate manner. It's not about your gender, it's about who you are as a person. You're either a supportive person or you're not. You're either a professional or you're not. Blaming back-stabbing and gossip on our gender is unacceptable. As nurses we can be better and we should be better than that. Other than that, great video! :)

I hate that term "male nurse." It sounds like there is something wrong with it. . .that old adage about being "light in the loafers" sort of thing. . . I have been an RN for 22 years. The BIGGEST problem I see, is that many women in nursing are uncomfortable with confrontation. Where as men, if we have a problem, we sit down, talk about it, fix it and move on. God forbid you piss in nurse lavenders Post toasties. . Rather than dealing up front with other nurses, they typically will be passive aggressive or dismissive of a problem. . . their resentment grows due to the lack of ability to be open and honest. They watch and wait in the shadows, like Gollum and when they find an opening, its back stab city. . .Anything they can do to discredit, or make you look bad. . I have to admit, like your letter writer, this is the worst environment. Back stabbing pesky little mosquitoes. polishing their little teeth like Rats. . .

I do not believe such issues are appropriate in educational institutions either, at any level. Regarding my comment, why does the gender of a healthcare provider even come into play, women are physicians, about 10-12% of those in the nursing profession are guys. Is it any more appropriate to refer to a "woman doctor," as opposed to "male nurse?" I made a choice after considering many options to enter a female dominated profession. I have never been without a job, unlike many other people. Therefor, I summize I have made a correct decision based on my criteria at the time. I sense hostility and confrontation in the final portion of your question regarding my "Knowledge of information of anything?" For the record, I do not portend to know everything, or even a significant portion thereof. However, I have a sufficient education from a second level college, and maintain an interest in many areas. To which, I ask, "what is your point?"

I feel like you are downplaying this issue. Nursing is a great profession but if you give answers like that makes me feel very disappointed. If these nurses are burnt out, then get out of the profession and change your career and go and do something else.I am sick and tired of these bullies. This is supposed to be a caring profession and when you get people like that pretending to be caring for the sick and yet not caring for their fellow nurses, that is hypocrisy. Who is going to change this kind of culture if you give answers like you have done. I am disappointed.

they eat their young because that is how they are taught in nursing school. If you don`t make perfect grades, you are out of the program, they don`t respect the student`s personal time, students are not allowed to miss any class time for any reason, if they do, they are given an extra assignment, and I could go on and on, but that is where it starts and then gets perpetuated with the same wrong mindset that sets up a cycle of abuse. It is hard to break down familiar patterns.

Honestly, I try not to let it bother me when the nurses are rude. I only feel sorry for them because I think about how they could lack so much compassion in a job that requires it. As a nursing student, a lot of the patients can tell when the nurses are indifferent and they tell us all about it. I just graduated and will be taking my NCLEX soon so I guess I'll really see how it is. I'm there to learn, not be petty.

First of all, Nurse bullying is not a Female nurse thing...so get over it (bullies) guys!... I have been a nurse over 25 yrs and had a 23/24 yr male nurse treat me like an idiot!! Boy, did I put a stop to him! The look on my face said it all before my mouth opened... and after my mouth opened i got respect that should have been there already. No one should ever have to stand up for their self to get respect... we should treat each other with respect as a common courtesy as human beings. I am a very good nurse and an easy going person... so, naturally i get bullied... well my thoughts on bullies is gonna get real!!!!!!!!!! 1. They dont have a clue as to what they are doing and when they see a nurse that has it together they get worried that we are gonna find them out!!! 2. They are control freaks in their own lives and cannot manage their home lives or their work life and they feel better if they crap on others. 3. They dont have a life so they have to have drama where they can find it! The last time i was bullied... i took my concerns to my DON... and as so many others have said, nothing was done! Well, I fixed that at the expense that i had to quit a job that I loved... That company was stupid enough to ask me for an exit interview!!! Shortly thereafter, that office was cleaned out!!!!!! I think only 2 or 3 of the non-supervisory nursing staff were left. Did that make me feel bad? YES!!! But, they started it with the bullying and ignoring the bullying. I would love to go back to the company and continue my work there but i am certain they (the supervisory staff) made me a no rehire! That Sucks!!! Again, there insecurities has screwed up my career.... But, They did not end it!! Thank God!

Good video - especially when you touch upon the politics of nursing as I can imagine that a lot of new nurses get particularly jammed up in that area (i.e., when to get a supervisor or a manager involved). I've been forewarned of 'cattiness' that often goes hand-in-hand with just about any female dominated profession. My suggestion: DON'T get caught up in the nonsense and keep people outta your personal business!

There is another reason and its a generational thing. As a veteran nurse (31 years) there is a widening generation gap that is huge, most nurses I work with I'm the same age as their mother. I guess to some extent each generation of nurses looks kind of down on the generation below and vice versa ( by assuming that an older nurse has a crappy attitude) and it is a shame indeed. But where do we say it is bullying or not meeting job expectations, sometimes it is difficult to say. If you are texting and your patient is trying to rip out their ETT I will let you know but in a nice manner to see to your patient in an unsafe situation, that will happen, but not in a bullying manner at all, in a factual manner. It is never ok to bully another nurse, ever, whether they are old or young. Stereotyping does not help either such as thinking that older nurses will be texting as the newer RN can clean crap etc, that is part of the problem with bulling is having preconcieved ideas about other nurses. Or the idea of older nurses thinking that young nurses are lazy etc, that is garbage too. My thought is that I'm done in ICU in a few years and I will do all in my power to help new or younger nurses succeed ( I have been a preceptor, charge etc) for a lot of years. Thanks and best wishes :)

Also, its ok to speak up and tell the older nurse how you feel. They may not realize how they are stressing you. They are also modeling a learned behavior. That is how they were precepted. Part of the nurses eat their young thing is tradition. Since this has been happening since before I graduated in 1983 (!) I think it has been condoned by the profession without much thought. You tend to treat new nurses in the same way that you were treated when you first started even though its terrible. I had hoped it was changing for the better in the last few years with the focus bullying in the workplace and the realization by older nurses that we have to stop it if we want to be able to retire! I have only worked in hospitals so I don't know if it goes on in other workplaces. We need to bring this out in the open and get nurses to stop doing this!

I got eaten old i was straight A students who helped everyone. i gave rides, exchanged stuff etc. kept my distance etc. I loved nursing, loved clinical, loved my all the people in my school. loved my patients. One girl asked me what i thought of her paper? It was a good rough draft. I Her it was good, better than i can write( in university i didn't know how to write essays till 3rd year) but i said she should fix it before handing it in. She would always say negative things when i came around. I avoided and ignored. Then one day she was acting up so i had a meeting with her to stop it. Ater that she and the other students ganged me. Everyday in class they bullied in front of teacher till i left. Between classes it was waaah waah. I called the head for an informal meeting. I was then threatened in front of the classes and one teacher said don't blame us if u fail During this time my tires got popped, rock thrown through windshield, my coat had white out on put on it I failed clinical. I decided to transfer to a new school. Over the summer i worked with communication coach in Australia and read tons of ei, leadership and other books. I got elected class rep right away. Then like a month into the term i was sitting with my lab group. one girl said the teacher shit on her for not wearing uniform in labs and asked me what should she do. I said did u resolve with teacher?And then i said just be professional. wear uniform and come prepared work hard and the teacher will love you. The girls said shouldn't we say it makes us feel bad. I said no she is your boss, keeit professional. they said how bout our feelings? And they seemed upset Right after lunch in labs,the girls complained that I was saying sexual inappropriate things. I was transferred to a new lab group, told to stay away from them. The school chased me around and tried to force me to sign a letter saying im admit saying sexual inappropriate things. I mean they put a lot of pressure on me. 5 times in one day the guy came to my classes. At least 25 emails called me to meetings saying i must attend the meeting to sign the letter. I refused and left nursing I' not perfect, im opionated, outspoken, and really direct but this kind of behavior should never be tolerated at all. Since these incidents i now left nursing and healthcare, i absolutely hate nursing and refuse contact with anyone in my former program. However, i do admit its not everyone my second class treated me the best.

I may not know what I was saying but I just wanted to know what is the right way to do. I was a Certified Surgical Tech for 39 years, 10 of those years I spent doing travel nursing....... ALL again ALL of my abuse from Dr.'s, RN's, management for my entire 39 year career. I have always been a patient advocate, and also an employee safety advocate. Management tell you to be a pt advocate but they truly do not want you to be. in the OR it is ALL about time and money, not about the patient. You report about things you see in error, and most never get addressed, never changes and you get labeled the trouble maker for speaking up. there are coverups just like in the Police field, the thin blue line. they bury it, hide it, and the whistle blower gets fired for some stupid reason, with no recourse to go to to help uncover the abuse and coverups. NOONE WILL LISTEN AND HELP, after 39 years I have finally given up nursing.

I've actually had the opportunity to work with mostly male nurses and cnas. While loved it, I can tell you that they have just as much drama as the females. It's a stressful job and some people are not able to handle it as well as others. Give each other a break. My job now, the nurses are in total control of how things are done on the unit and we have an amazingly supportive team because we said in the beginning that we didn't want to work at a place filled with animosity and we are all female. No drama, it can be done.

I am not a nurse but I am a DSP. I have seen more nurses being catty then just plain nice ones It discourages me going into the nursing field because I don't want to end up like that. I've had several incidents of nurses calling me out on the littlest thing, many yell at me expecting me to know something as if I can read their mind. I have learned to stand up for myself and believe me it makes a difference. Once had a nurse be sooo nice to me afterwards, maybe I scared her? I am the sweetest person ever but when I have my limit, the dark side comes out. I have a fond respect for nurses as I know they have knowledge that I am unaware of and guidance. I get it life is stressful but don't take it out on coworkers.

Hey there, I definitely have a hunch that males get a little less of this treatment just because they are physiologically bigger and give off a presence that lets nurses who tend to bully to feel as though they can't do that. Not trying to be sexist, just stating a sociobiological observation that may or may not be wrong. Just like a manipulator can't manipulate someone with a mind that won't let it happen. I feel like if you let someone be that way with you, they learn that they can get away with it and continue. Is saying yes ma'am no ma'am and biting the tongue really the way to go with this, as a female? I'm questioning myself about this.

My spin on this- nursing started in part as a way for 19th-century women to have a career. These nursing foremothers were up against the male based paradigm of medicine. They could not measure up so they began a hierarchy within the profession to "oppress the oppressors" Look at Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed- powerlessness. Also, males are inserting themselves in a profession that has been traditionally female. The personalities can be controlling also. I agree with your reasons as well. From an undergraduate nursing professor. Not right, we need to change our history for the future.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for the excellent, highly motivated students who aspire to the greatest profession I have ever loved, BUT… : I have LOVED caring for hospital patients since 1977, LOVED every minute of nursing school and being a major trauma center nurse since 1981. I hope to have R.N. (next to U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran) carved into my tombstone. Although still licensed, I was kicked out of bedside nursing (for writing complaints of the FORCED negligent care of my patients falling through the cracks) in ’03. When I see the way the greedy U.S. for-profit industry of hospital/pharmacy/insurance increasingly operates, I know that I could never, ever, work in a U.S. hospital again. Hospitals do not give two shits about allowing nurses to help patients ACTUALLY HEAL-only in raising CUSTOMER satisfaction scores and only BILLABLE procedures that will generate profits. “AS SOON AS WE PUT PROFIT INTO HEALTH CARE WE WILL ONLY HELP THE SHAREHOLDERS”---DENNIS KOCINICH
