Obesity, once established, leads to irreversible changes in how our bodies regulate body weight. In 2013, this discovery prompted the American Medical Association to declare obesity a disease. How does this decision change our approach to obesity and why will this make a difference for those struggling with excess weight? Arya Sharma-Chair in Obesity Research and Management, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry-discusses how recent discoveries will shape the future of obesity prevention and management.

@@stuco there were actually tons, no pun intended. Google some pictures of beaches from the 50s/60s and you'll see every form of body under the sun, including obese bodies. You can also find black and white turn of the century obese people, take a deep dive into art and they're there, as well...The advent of processed foods and sugar additives in America coupled with a sedentary (office job) work life definitely streamlined the advancement and increase of obesity, as well. It's not as simple as brushing it off as LaZy people, or people who over indulge, it's very complicated and if you haven't ever struggled with it, you should count your lucky stars.

Three-fourths of the things he listed were true 50 years ago, when virtually no one was obese in the U.S. Some are definitely contributing causes. But the two things which have changed grossly are TOO MUCH JUNK FOOD FULL OF FRUCTOSE--EVERYWHERE, EVERY MINUTE--and far less physical activity. The problem is, once you gain it, your body resets and doesn't want to go back down. Been fighting this for decades. Finally won--by totally changing diet forever. MUST give up junk--all added sugar, processed food, meat. And daily exercise. And yes. Willpower. Or bariatric surgery. The cure is CULTURAL. Prevent alcoholics and smoking: make it really difficult and expensive to get alcohol and cigs; same with food. KEEP ALL OF THEM ENTIRELY AWAY from kids, teach people how to eat well, subsidize crops that are good for you, DO NOT PAY farmers to grow corn!!

@@0-Hyperdryve-0 red meat is loaded with cholesterol and bad fat. Not to mention agribusiness is spawn of Satan and tortures billions of animals (my family were farmers for hundreds of years; family farms are the polar opposite of the horrors of agribusiness). I do eat a lot of wild-caught salmon.

@@billyhw5492 At least they had a social life and freedom. You gotta eat SOMETHING and vegetarianism just doesn't provide enough nutrients for most people. And on small family farms, the animals live better than in nature (the natural state is universally nasty, brutish, and short). Better me than a black bear.

Obesity is not a disease you guys are just promoting and encouraging people to continue what they are doing without fixing the problem

Taken from the Oxford dictionary "a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that has a known cause and a distinctive group of symptoms, signs, or anatomical changes." Disordered eating is most DEF a disease.

How do you fix the problem?
@RSJ420
@RSJ420 22 күн бұрын
@@billyhw5492 well if you want to fix the problem you start at the source of the problem excessive amounts of food and lack of physical activity / exercise. Walking is exercise work can be exercise anything physical that demands movement is exercise to actually see results depends on how hard you push yourself and how physically demanding the activity is you won't see any results if you aren't willing to push or help yourself everything starts with you not someone else.

@@RSJ420Are you saying that telling people to eat less and exercise more will solve the problem of the obesity epidemic? We really need to get the word out then.
@RSJ420
@RSJ420 22 күн бұрын
@@billyhw5492 so what you are telling me is that you are taking what I said out of context and delivering it in a poor attempt at comedic sarcasm and doing that is a better solution then being brutally honest and telling those fat phucks to stop stuffing their faces with junk food and eat better go out and do more physically demanding activities?
