This is the cannon reason yes. The real reason, however, is that in the original script anakin and vader were separate people, and vader killed anakin prior to A Nee Hope. This was changed in the script of The Empire Strikes Back, and it definitely made for a better story. This also switched the meaning of obi-wans explanation here from vader literally killing anakin to him metaphorically murdering his old self.

You can think Obi-Wan was a f*cking liar in Episode IV. But I prefer saying he was only protecting Luke from the darkness. So he acted like a good man, from a certain point of view.

I was wondering about this last night

In truth, it was because George Lucas didn't expect Star Wars to become so popular, and while Episode 5 was in production, he originally intended for Anakin and Vader to be separate people, with Luke actually talking with his father's ghost at one point. But he changed his mind.

I think the answer was simpler than that. Aside from the plot Lucas orchestrated, Kenobi could not deal with the fact that he could do what needed to be done when Anakin embraced the darkside. Guilt is the reason for Kenobi's lack of fact. Even Yoda kept up the lie, as did the Lars and even Organas. No one wanted to tell the Skywalker children of their history. The fact that so many would deny them the facts of the history makes them the accomplices of the Dark Side. Remember, evil thrives when good men do nothing. Of course there will be anger at learning the "truth" but look at the damage done by deny the truth. No wonder Leia felt such anger at Anakin and probably was one of the reasons why she didn't want to become a Jedi. As for Luke, his fall to the dark side would have been more motivated by the anger he felt at those who kept the secrets, but I don't think he would join the Sith, no matter what signup package Palpetine would offer. Spinning a different story soothed Kenobi's failure at Luke and Leia's expense. Funny, didn't history repeat itself when Anakin was a Jedi???

Imagine if Leia was told the truth about Vader, but after being tortured by him and the loss of her adopted homeworld and family. Those events, along with her experiences leading up to them and the "bombshell," Obi-Wan stopped himself from dropping may of pushed Leia over the edge, becoming another dark mark in the Skywalker legacy.

I just thought that maybe it was because he didn't want Luke to hesitate when fighting Vader. I mean think about it. If he told Luke that Vader was his father's killer, it would only strengthen Luke's resolve and determination to save the galaxy and bring down the empire; all while trying to avenge his father's "death" in the process.

Regardless of whether you agree with George selling Star Wars or not, Lucas was a genius in how he incorporated elements of Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
