And yet all the Old Republic Sith failed to conquer the galaxy or hold it for significant time, something Sidious managed to do. Bane's Order realized the stupidity of fighting the Jedi at their own game and instead made the Jedi play the Darkside's game.

@@grandadmiralzaarin4962 To be fair, even Palpatine's reign only lasted a few decades. That's always been something I've noticed about Star Wars: the passage of time isn't always clear. It becomes easy for things to feel like they either lasted longer or shorter than they actually did.

I mean, it was a long time coming after the great hyperspace war committing genocide against the Sith race, instead of just simply defeating them. (Genocide being a recurring Star Wars theme actually now that I think about it lol.)

I mean depends on where you were. Some of the places were extremely safe or to heavily defended to get attacked easily. But the places that weren't really weren't, the bad places were extremely bad. Also knowledge on the dark side was easier to obtain, before the Sidious era the jedi had a habit of destroying any sith items they came across. Making it a pain to get real info on the dark side. Were as in the old era the Jedi had the policy of locking it up, and they had so many sith temples knowledge was much easier to obtain. So a lot of old powerful dark side techniques became lost to time.

@Big Daddy Rikka Sure, George has said many times that Sidious is the most powerful Sith, that ever was and probably ever will be, but there are plenty of Sith from the past who would give him a run for his money. I know he's overused in such comparisons, but Vitiate would prove to be a formidable foe even for Sidious.

To be fair, the Jedi themselves had little say in the matter. It was Palpatine that decided to accept the clonetroopers as the Republic's military force. He pretty much decided that himself, and the Jedi were left in a position of either sitting on the sidelines or accepting the use of the clonetroopers. And the Jedi were in a position where they'd recently just "discovered" that one of their former members, Count Dooku, was now a Sith Lord and leading the opposition forces. From the Jedi's perspective, Dooku was an existential threat to them and the Republic and they had a responsibility to do something about an ex-Jedi. The details are pretty important and do a lot to show just how...insidious and clever Darth Sidious' plan really was. Palpatine left them in a position where they feel like they had to take action. But the only way to take action was to unsuspectingly do so on Palpatine's terms.

The problem was that by the time this was discovered it was too late. the war had begun and the jedi could not simply pull out of it and let innocents burn while they did nothing - they had done soin the past and it shattered the republic. Palpatine had trapped them. They had no choice but to play his game even though the could fell it was not right. hey were not stupid, they were backed intoa corner and Palps used their own philosophy against them. a Jedis life is sacrifice... ...So he sacrificed them all...

Ofcourse the old republic wars were more brutal. The Sith's hatred for the jedi and republic were still fresh after they commited genocide against the sith. Sith wanted nothing more but to totally destroy the republic and the jedi, there ain't no plans to change the republic into a Empire, the old republic Sith would think you're crazy and a heretic if you would come up with that plan xD Hence why i love old republic more then the movies. I do agree that the Clone wars was the saddest era of all. There been verry brutal eras, but none is sadder then the Clone wars. Star wars is about family and in the movies you see one family being ripped apart after the other. While the Clone Army is actually one verry big family.

I Love the old republic more then Any of the 9 movies. The Old Republic covers mostly the wars, the bloodshed, The merciless fights between jedi and sith on Large Galactic Scales. But in the Movies, The Republic, the jedi, the Sith,.. are all a Mere shadow of their former Ancient self.

@Wes Bradley-Taubner Putting aside the fact that 'saddest' anything is basically utterly subjective and up to viewer whims, well...yes, to be quite fucking frank, the Clone Wars DID surpass the Old Republic era wars in scale and devastation. This...really isn't up for debate. The vast majority of the wars in the earlier eras were inherently more limited fundamentally just by virtue of the Republic being smaller, if nothing else. Add in that almost none of them bar the TOR ones and the New Sith Wars ever came so much as close to touching the Core, where the overwhelming majority of the galaxies population and industry is concentrated, and yes, the Clone Wars beats any single individual conflict (bar the New Sith Wars) by a decent margin at best, and by a fucking landslide at worst. And it stills beats out most even if you stack them onto of each other. Like I said, the ONLY true exception is the New Sith Wars, which were quite possibly the single most devastating conflict in SW, bar shit like the war in the Vong's home galaxy or such.

That's the inherent weakness to a sith. When your power comes from personal indulgence, you will never be able to put aside your own selfishness.

And everything they built was lost and forgotten for thousands of years because it fell apart in a week without their dictators. Palpatines empire was built on an actual functional society, so much so that it took like 15 years to lose to the new republic and even then, continued to exist as a large power in the outer rim for decades before once more taking over much of the galaxy.

You...do realize the contexts are utterly incomparable, right? The Triumvirate were dealing with (more mopping up, truthfully speaking) the shattered remnants of an order that had just been utterly spent and exhausted dealing with not just one, not two, but THREE galactic scale conflicts, all of which involved the enemy heavily focusing on dealing with them. By the time the Jedi Civil War was over, its doubtful if there was more then a few thousand Jedi left, most of which would be either isolated, or concentrated in specific temples and such. Add in the Triumvirate had the massive advantage of being a gurellia force almost ENTIRELY hyper-specialized on dealing with Force users, and...yeah, no shit they nearly killed the Jedi? If they had tried pulling that routine off even a few years earlier, it would be a different story.

I actually skipped to the end of your comment very early because I already knew what you were saying. Yes of course the sith Triumvirate was so successful because there were so few jedi. However, their guerrilla tactics would have likely been just as effective a few years earlier because of what their guerrilla tactics employed. Sure it would have taken quite a bit longer for the purge, but the efficiency of it would have likely been the same.

Darth Nihilus' force draining and Darth Sion's assassins made short work of the remaining jedi. Given how the jedi were organized, it is not "absurd" to think that they could have the same success against the jedi. They could get done in a few years what the sith grand plan took a millennium of playing the waiting game did. The sith triumvirate played a different game than other sith empires, much like the order of the sith lords did. That is partly why they were so successful at destroying what little jedi were left and why they would likely be successful a few years ago doing the same thing, even if it took longer. The ONLY thing the Jedi would likely have had major problems with, if not an outright insurmountable obstacle depending, is Nihilus due to his unique nature, but even then, the Republic circa a few years before when IT wasn't on death doors could solve that problem by simply blasting him into dust with a large enough fleet. The assassins and Sion could be solved by simply killing them whenever they popped up, or in the latters case, dumping him out an airlock in deep space or whatever. The Triumvirate Sith were dangerous, but they aren't unbeatable, and we know they still struggled even killing some famous Jedi, albeit ones in hiding, up to and including a galactic war hero like Bastilia and her kid. And once AGAIN, stop fucking trying to compare what the Rule of Two Sith pulled off and the Triumvirate. They are both nearly incomparable due to the different contexts, but ultimately, what the ROT Sith did was INFINITELY more impressive simply by virtue of NOT fighting against a near-dead Republic and Jedi.

Lurking in the Shadows of The Sith Triumvirate was Vitiate and Revan. If the Triumvirate destroyed the Jedi, they would have stepped in.

That's the real issue with the Sith. No one defeats the Sith like the Sith do.

Well, the ones that were just gunned down. Jedi that actually captured were often tortured into becoming Inquisitors. Or they were just tortured...to death. Countless generations of Sith masters and apprentices leading to Order 66 and then after the success of Order 66 Palp’s empire lasts for a whopping… twenty years… countless generations of RoT sith lived and died for an empire that lasted a mere infintismally small fraction of that time. A darksider is weaker when the Dark Side is shared among many. And the troopers who were beating Sith in the face were elites, at least as skilled and as well equipped as clone troopers. Prequel levels of technological innovation would be significant edge in their era.
