In this video, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch shows that our human need to connect with others is not only a psychological need but a physiological one well. The need for affiliation is hard-wired into our biology.

Both my cats and my small dog like to creep onto the bed and they're SO much more content all cuddled up with me... Awe bless those poor other lab experimented animals that suffer physiology of despair... That feels heartbreaking to me. Poor creatures xxxx

They only had to endure that overnight when the mother was gone. In the morning The lab technician put the mother back in the environment, and then they were fine.

Yes, poor little mice. So are chickens and calves in slaughterhouses and kids in war zones. And mice are often tested for cosmetics

Hi Douglas, your videos are very helpful. You have a nice calm delivery & you make your videos interesting, very kind & helpful. I have been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia so I’m on a anti psychotic medication that has worked & stopped all my paranoid thoughts and delusions. However a side effect of the anti psychotic medication is “depression” and “demotivation” all last week I stayed in bed in my dressing gown or pyjamas. I was very demotivated. I watched a lot of your videos back to back I found them very helpful. My mum said that I’m giving up not getting washed & dressed during the day she said if I continue to be demotivated I’ll have a sad life. I’m 43, her words kind of woke me up and made me realise I’m giving up staying in bed all day. So today I woke up in the morning had a shower and went for a walk. I’m going to my dads for tea, so I’m being productive. I’m going to continue to watch your videos and take the advice. And every day go walking and swimming & stay active rather than lay in bed all day. Hopefully I can beat this depression. If I stay active. Thank you for your videos very helpful you help keep me going

Thank you for this excellent video that helps me to understand why toughing it out is just not working for me at all. Appreciated the jokes,, as life can get way too dark and heavy. I'm looking forward to your other videos, and it helps to remember that others suffer from isolation and depression too.

I am a speech therapist. Yes. Our brains are automatically hard wired to connect. Human babies typically seek familiar voice of mom (connnection)... Human babies look at other human faces and seem to understand that the adult human looking at them is one of them. Think about that... Thats amazing. How an infant who has not seen a mirror knows another human is them. When humans dont act like that as babies its a huge red flag for autism. We. Need. Each. Other. Its so true

I really relate to this topic! Explains why my son and I both suffer with deep depression. When he was only 14 months old, his violent, deranged father kidnapped him while we were going through divorce. They were missing almost a year. My ex has schizophrenia, and my son was severely neglected during that year. Sometimes he was shut in a closet and likely tied up when his father went out. My son told this to a therapist when he was a toddler by acting out what "badman" did to him. He always called him "bad man". When we brought him back home, he was terrified if he couldn't see me. I didn't want to start letting him sleep in my bed, but for the first month he was home I slept on the floor in his room and he fell asleep with his head on my chest, listening to my heartbeat. Eventually he could sleep on his own, but he never became "normal". His father tried to get visitation, but he lost any chance of that. He was very angry and vowed to make me "cry an endless stream of tears". On August 13th, 1996, he went to my parents' house and shot my Father to death. My son adored his Grandfather, my Dad was my best friend, it was catastrophic. We had to go into hiding because my ex got away and was missing 10 months. When our story was featured on "Unsolved Mysteries", it was discovered the murderer was in jail using his brother's identity. The police lost DNA evidence and the eyewitness, so he wasn't even indicted. He went to prison for 4 years for violating parole on the kidnapping. When he was about to be released, I sold my home, packed up the cats and my son and moved 1500 miles away. I even changed my name when I got here. I've been in "fight or flight" mode for years. No wonder anxiety is off the charts. My son is 27 now, and now also has schizophrenia, sadly. About a year ago, he hurt me during one of his "episodes" so I filed a restraining order and had the sheriff take him away. I feel horrible, but I know it's what I had to do. He's homeless now, living on the street, but he's actually better off than when he was here. I live off-grid on 20 acres, only leave the house once a week. He was never leaving the house, was immersed in video games and pot-smoking every waking moment. Now he's homeless in a beautiful mountain community full of kind people who are helping him. He no longer has video games and weed, so he spends his days at the library reading, and he's drawing again. He's a talented artist, and he's selling his sketches to tourists for $5 each. I'm proud of him. A lot of people would call him a loser, but I know the hell he's been through. He's made friends at the library and the Buddhist temple up there. He's wanting to join the temple, and I hope he does. I think the discipline and meditation could really help his mental illness.

Hey Doug did you ever have the morning anxiety bad? The shaking and heart racing
@DouglasBloch
@DouglasBloch 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I did, in 1996 to 1997 when I answered through an agitated depression. I had someone drive me to the local community swimming pool, where i swam until I was exhausted and then sat in the hot tub. Sometimes I needed to take a Klonopin. Eventually The anxiety went away.

Beth D, I've had it before and sometimes still do. Keep in mind, when you wake up in the morning your body will often put adrenaline into the blood stream to get your body going for the day. This can sometimes cause anxiety. It's very natural. If you're too tired to get up, try sitting up on the edge of your bed and doing some deep breathing until you calm yourself. Hope this helps. (hugs)

I have horrible anxiety and depression sometimes as soon as I wake up and sometimes within an hour. Nightmares are not helping as waking up from a nightmare has already had the adrenaline and cortisol dump just before awakening. I do about 30 minutes of Calming Breathing exercises each morning. Once I get out of bed and dressed, I walk my dogs. That helps some. Eating breakfast after the dog walks helps. Nice to know I'm not the only one who has this challenge.
