History Channel’s hit TV series Pawn Stars has become a cultural sensation, but like any reality show, it’s not exactly what it seems to be.
You can’t simply walk into Gold & Silver Pawn in Las Vegas and ask to speak to Rick, Chumlee, or Corey. Sure, all of the items shown on the reality series are real items up for sale, but as you may have suspected, Rick isn’t just calling in an expert who happens to be five minutes down the road.
There’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes of Pawn Stars than you may know, so let’s take a look at why some fans have declared Pawn Stars to be totally fake.

for what it's worth, i went into their shop yrs b4 they had the tv show to pawn 10 CDs for gas money and dealt with the old man (2002, i think). told me we only buy used CDs, $1 each. i told him but i really want to get these back, this is good music. he inspected my stuff, i sighed forlornly and told him ok, i need the money --- and he handed the CDs to an employee and told him to write me up a ticket! 2 days later i go in again to cash out my ticket and get my music back. as i'm walking out Rick, standing behind the jewelry case, looked at me and said "you're very lucky, we NEVER write tickets for CDs". i said, yeah i know and kept going. so the old man treated me very well indeed and didn't have to

You don't need to explain why the show is fake. People are aware it's fake. Look at the hints: 1. Chumlee is allowed to be a lazy ass who talks back to his bosses and doesn't get fired for it. 2. They don't call in their so-called "experts" until after they ask the person how much they want for an item. Sometimes even after the "expert" gives a value, they'll tell the seller "I'm just not interested in the item." Then why waste the seller's time?! 3. It's a PAWN SHOP! Is there such a thing as an honest pawn shop? If so, they're about as rare as an honest mechanic.

Rarer still, an honest politician. An honest pawn shop can be found, but those who expect to be paid retail when selling to a pawn shop are being VERY unrealistic with themselves. I love seeing these jerks come in and say, no deal, I can get more elsewhere, then they show up later tail between their legs and take the deal. Unless you have a REAL rarity and go to an auction house setting a reserve, you're gonna take their deals. A pawn shop is a horrible place to sell any item, you'll never get anywhere near more then 50% of the trending price of ANYTHING.

I remember one episode where some guy walks in wanting to sell a coke machine and the show gets restoration expert Rick Dale to restore it. Turns out the guy "selling" the machine is Rick Dale's brother as Rick Dale would later have his own spin-off show on History channel restoring old junk and the brother would be prominently shown on the show. In another episode, a guy sells to Rick Harrison a mini convertible that turned out to be a junk. Look closely and you'll see that the guy is wearing an employee jacket from Count's Customs, another History channel Pawn Stars spin-off show.
@eolsunder
@eolsunder 6 жыл бұрын
yes we know all this. Was proved long ago when the episode aired, because the coke machine before and after the restoration were totally different models of the coke machine, they weren't even the same machine they just brought in a vintage fixed up coke machine from their collection which wasn't even the same type as the original they showed they wanted to fix up. We know, the show is staged and fake, its a reality show for entertainment and it does exactly that.
@williamgottlieb8723
@williamgottlieb8723 6 жыл бұрын
I just caught a rerun of that episode with the Coke machine. I have also seen a few episodes of the restoration show and thought that guy was a part of it. Did you notice the "restored" Coke machine is a completely different model? I know he said he was going to change it with the window and such, but check out the logo on the front which is in a different position and smaller. You can't do that by repainting it as that sleeveless clown said he did! You can also see the difference around the door opening which they try to hide by only showing a zoom in of the "before" machine but is very apparent when watching the earlier segment with the machine on that episode. They probably just ordered a machine from one of those high-end catalogs as I doubt those cartoon characters can actually restore anything. The whole operation looks like a front for a meth lab anyway. I just check the listings to watch for things such as arcade games and pinball machines and any coin operated items that will be shown as I currently have an interest in such items, so I don't mind the phony parts.

Was basically forced to visit that place last time I was in Vegas by the group of friends I was with. We all knew it was fake but I guess morbid curiosity got to us. The thing that I thought was really crazy was the way the inside of the shop looks compared to what is on the show. The front door from the inside and the counter where the desks are, are the same, but the shop itself looks nothing like they portray on the show. They have a huge new section of the shop attached to the back of the street side of the building. They said its for storage. We all wondered if that is where they actually film the close up stuff for the show. Cause I gotta tell you, the shop you walk into is a complete shit hole and looks nothing like the clean, shiny, open shop space you see on TV.

I have been suspicious for a while now that they work w/ their experts to under price an item. Just have the expert give a price a few thousand less than the worth, so that the pawn guys can give the person less money. I have even seen a guitar expert give a price & then tell Rick that if he buys it, he will buy it off of Rick. That is so shady & is a conflict of interest. The only 2 experts I like & trust are the beard of wisdom guy & the lady who prices antique books.

I used to work concert production and did a show in Indiana for the Pawn Stars. They were doing on the road shows to make a "Pawn Stars Road Show", which never happened, every one was asked to bring unusual items to sell them. I brought a dinamite plunger detonator which dated to the late 1800's to early 1900's. I dealt with Rick, he eventually bought it for $125. About 3 months later I saw an episode showing a "guy off the street" bring in the detonator I had sold them. It was unmistakably the same detonator as it had a chip missing from the wooden handle, which they showed a close up of, I was surprised and disgusted by them. A couple months later I saw a guy sell a dirt bike to them, he supposedly was a "local guy-he was the entertainment manager for the casino in Indiana where I had sold the detonator! Nothing they say or do can be believed!

While visiting Las Vegas my sister tried to get in the pawn shop but wasn’t allowed in because they were filming. While filming they only let a handful of people in the shop at a time, then they lock the doors. I’m sure the “stars” get paid enough that they don’t need to worry so much about actually making a profit from pawned / sold items. 🙄

Have been in the shop multiple times. The show isn't fake. If it wasn't produced, arranged and scheduled, there would be no show. Nobody in their right mind is going to film 160 hours just to get 2 interesting items. Only morons expect to go to a reality show setting and just mingle with the stars, or actors. The show is a hit with me for the educational value. Rick has built something impressive, the show is very family positive, and a hell of a lot of interesting items are presented to the audience. Great, great show.

This may have been mentioned, but there's an early episode with a seller named "Ron." Ron's item, bought by the pawn shop, gets fixed up by Rick's Restorations. There's just one small problem. The guy who sold the item is none other than Ron Dale, Rick Dale's brother! This is very obvious if you've watched American Restoration.
@brockadams9307
@brockadams9307 7 жыл бұрын
I remember one episode where Rick Dale’s brother from the Rick’s Restoration show brought in an old Coca-Cola ice box to sell. Pawn Star’s Rick Harrison called in an expert to appraise the item… Rick Dale. Harrison “bought” the ice box from Rick Dale’s TV brother and sent it home with Rick Dale for restoration. Pawn Stars and Rick’s Restorations are pure television entertainment and nothing more. Yes both shows may have actual store fronts and may exist in real life, but rest assured every episode is scripted. The customers bringing items to either business for appraisal, sale, pawn or restoration have been carefully researched long before they come through the door. Back in the late eighties I met pro wrestler Jerry Blackwell “the Crusher” when he came to NAU in Flagstaff Arizona and put on a demonstration of pro wrestling. One student asked if it was all faked. Blackwell responded, “The moves are practiced and real… but we know who’s going to win before we step into the ring.” I think it broke the poor kid’s heart.

Hi Nicki. I have actually visited Rick Harrison's Gold and Silver Pawn shop, seen every episode of the show, and read his book. Your title, "Why Pawn Stars Is Totally Fake", is sensationalistic and disingenuous. Some of the things you say are true. For instance, it is very doubtful that you will actually see Rick, Cory, or Chumlee on a routine visit to the shop. Since the show is so popular, their very presence would disrupt daily business. Also, yes, the customer visits you see on the show are "scripted", in the sense that they are vetted in order to make the show interesting. Most of the items you see on the show are sells, while the actual truth is many of the items presented to the shop are brought in for pawn, which means that the shop gives the customer a loan with the item serving as collateral. And no, pawn shops are not inherently "seedy". You sound like you have little real world experience in barter.

+Douglas Williams: you obviously don't know anything about the real world of Vegas. Pawn shops in the shittiest part of Vegas are nothing more than legal fence operations that rip off criminals and degenerate gamblers trying to make one last bet or find their drug dealer. You are seedy when 90% of your business consists of low-balling prostitutes who bring in jewelry stolen from their Johns to get fifty bucks to spend on heroin so they can make it through another day of their horrid lives. Pawnsters are all experts on watches because they get most of their business from paying $100 for stolen Rolexs worth $5000.

I admit I am surprised. I have been to hard core pawn in Detroit and the family was there filming on a Saturday. People were lined up outside the door to pay or pawn. Shoppers like ourselves could walk right in though. There was a sign out front of the shop that said if you enter you agree to be filmed. We watched for a few minutes and I bought a gold charm as a memento. We were told by staff we could talk to the family, but only when not filming. we got our pictures taken with them too.
