For people who don't skate (or are new to skating), it can come as a surprise to learn that skateboarders don't like longboarders. Even though I don't personally have a problem with longboarding, I've heard a lot of other skaters complain about it, so I feel like I have a good perspective on it. In this video, we go over why skaters hate longboarders.

Different mentality. I used to skate as a kid. Liked doing tricks and it was a blast. Loved pushing and challenging myself. Put it down for several years once college started. Recently rediscovered my love for being on a board. But I realized my mentality had changed. I don't care about tricks anymore. I just love the ride. To cruise. Put head phones on and explore. Maybe bomb some hills for a bit of an adrenaline rush but for the most part just relax and enjoy. That's kinda hard on a regular board. There's a huge difference between a standard 54mm skateboard wheel and the 85mm wheels I'm rocking on my board now in terms of ride quality, shear speed, and momentum. It's not even close. And yes I do use it as a means of transport and I think that's a perfectly valid reason. It's a great fun clean method of alternative transport. Skaters just need to accept that longboarders just don't have the same priorities that they do or care about the same things. Just live and let live brother

Longboards actually came first. Surfers in California wanted to have something to do when the waves were dull. So they just made a surfboard with wheels. This shortly evolved to skateboards as making them shorter was better for tricks. When people figured out that you could jump with them, it opened up a whole new avenue and skateboarding started to become it's own extremely popular sport. In other words, a skateboard is to a surfboard, what a motorcycle is to a car. Both came from the same place, but one evolved from the other and went in a completely new direction. Longboards are just surfbords on land, they're meant replicate the feeling of surfing. However, longboarding too evolved into it's own sports. The 2 main ones are downhill and freeriding. Both of these are extremely different compared to skating and surfing and they deserve their own respect. There's also longboard dancing which is relatively new and modern.

I hate the mindset that we can’t all just be part of a bigger community. Skateboarders act like it’s an exclusive club that you can only get into when you “earn your stripes” but by gatekeeping all you’re doing is making it harder for your community to grow and giving it a bad reputation. There are plenty of good points in this video, like hating on posers who only get into longboarding for the aesthetic, but at the end of the day, everyone is trying to just have fun. Let everyone have their own brand of fun, and if you see some poser newbie struggling on a longboard, help them out instead of pointing at them and insulting them for not being “cool/good enough.” This toxic gatekeeping mindset helps nobody and all it does is inflate egos. Skateboarding is VERY difficult, but it won’t grow if we push everyone who’s interested away. Personally I love riding both and don’t see why I need to choose! Just riding any board is fun for me :)

I got into long boarding later on in my teen years. My neighborhoods streets were really bumpy and riddled with pebbles and debris and I wound up hurting myself a lot on my cheap skateboard because of it. It also didn’t help I was trying to learn how to skate at the time as well. I was an avid biker but I wanted something more casual for cruising around. I remember the incident where I decided to switch. I was getting really decent at just going fast at this point, I was never interested in trucks because I didn’t care about impressing people I just liked the motion, my wheel hit the tiniest pebble and bucked me off. Of course with my luck this was right in-front of a pile of broken beer bottles and shards of glass my neighbor had thrown in the street. I tucked and rolled to protect my face but long story short I spent the night picking glass out of my back and arms. I decided I needed something heftier with thicker wheels and got a long board. It was immediately a better experience for me and exactly what I wanted from skating. Simple cruising while I listened to my music. And yes the tricks on long boarding are stupid but they are easy for people to pick up on and just fun to do. I haven’t been boarding in years but I remember my time doing it fondly. My main hobby has always been bass playing and after we moved I just sorta stopped. This video made me want to get back on my old board though lol

This video is so weird to me because after reading a lot of comments, I see a lot of people share the same opinion and experience I do: I longboard, and I see skateboarding and longboarding as two different things that shouldn’t be compared. Also - I know skaters that literally encourage longboarding. Also, I’m a college student that works a lot .. and I wish I had time to lean tricks, but I literally don’t. I drive an hour back and fourth for work from home … I longboard to relax and release all negative energy and find positives. It’s peaceful and fun! Also: the speed! But literally- skateboarders and longboarders mostly seem to coexist peacefully from what I’ve experienced lol.

Let me also add that I have physical illness in the form of an inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects my breathing. Longboarding makes me feel free and helps me regulate my breathing … but I also don’t have all of the energy I wish I did to spend on learning tricks on a longboard, cruiser, or trick board. (I also use my cruiser boards a LOT)! There are many different reasons someone may choose to longboard over skateboard. Stop trying to divide those that do different things on different types of boards. Just let people have fun!

I'm 45 and I started longboarding 3 years ago as a fun mode of transportation. I have not desire to learn tricks. Now that my 11 year old son has picked up skateboarding, it's fun to go out cruising with him. Only thing I learned from this video is to stay away from skateboarders as they will do nothing but judge me.

I loved longboarding as a kid. I've been skating since I was 5~6 years old, but there wasn't many places around my home with stable ground to practice, and the closest skate park was like an hour long walk at least. When longboards became a fad around when I was 12 or so I got really interested in it because the big wheels made it very easy for me to just ride around despite the messy terrain. As I got older and had less time to practice tricks on my skateboard the longboard was the one of the few things that got me out of the house since it was so easy to have a good time with it. That said, both of my boards were, and still are very precious to me.

Dogs love it too! My dog is super high energy and needs really long walks, or she needs to run around. Since I don't have a fenced yard I taught her to follow me on the leash. We have a bunch of super gradual hills near my place and she basically jogs next to me while I cruise down the hills on my longboard. She absolutely loves it, and she wouldn't get this kind of exercise otherwise.

Of course longboards can’t do tricks(they can but it’s way harder), they’re not meant for that. The only similarities are that both have wheels attached to a board. As for “power sliding” with softer wheels , which longboards tend to have, you get more traction so you need more speed and force to initiate it. I practice both sports and I don’t think it’s fair to compare them in the same category.

Notice how people longboarding tend to have a lot more safety gear on than skateboarders? You see that, and you know they're serious. If you can powerslide on a longboard and drop hills, good for you, because that's an incredible skill (very dangerous though). Also, I agree with a lot of the other comments, longboarding and skateboarding aren't meant to be comparable in aspects such as tricks and 'aesthetics'.

I skateboarded for 20 years, and still do a little. However, I took up longboarding (mainly freeride) in my early 30s in order to save my knee after a few injuries from big slams and the gym. Honestly, the skills aren't completely transferable, and I'm struggling a lot to unlearn some of the habits I've picked up skating a normal deck. Slides are completely different, and managing your speed is so much harder on 72mm soft wheels. I was definitely a judgemental skater in my younger years, but after growing up, it all seems a bit dumb to gatekeep so much. Longboarding is a completely different sport at it's core, but we are all just riding around on planks of wood with four wheels at the end of the day.

This video was clearly made thru the eyes of a skater and has zero imput of an actual longboarder. Yes we both ride a piece of wood, with trucks and 4 wheels, but we are not the same. Yes longboarders can do "tricks" but longboarding is far more diverse than skateboarding. Or maybe just as diverse. In what would be classified as "longboarding" there are different categories, that require different set ups and technique which all require a lot of time and effort to "earn your stripes" freeride, dancing, and downhill / racing just to name the most common. I personally do downhill/racing, and freeriding. It was untrue when you said something about there's not anywhere to go once you've mastered the few "tricks".. that is farthest from the truth. There's always something new to learn, new hills to bomb, events to go to. Downhill longboard racing is on its way to the Olympics, anybody who's interested look up "world skate games Argentina 2022 downhill skateboarding" I dislike "posers" as much as the next person, but not all longboarders are posers, just like not all people who wear thrasher hoodie is a poser. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

And God forbid thinking wax is never needed, or that tiny 101a 40mm wheels have any benefit besides being a pebble trap Shortboarders believe their setup has to be exactly one shape and size because of the industry standard popsicle, yet almost all tricks are possible on every shape. Took my surfskate to a skate park for the first time a week ago. I've gone 4 times since. Yes, I feel completely alienated when i walk in... a female with a Carver board... even more so when a teen yelled "pu$$y skater" at my back... but you know, I've got the longest board out there >:] Honestly, past the obnoxious "skater bros" making the most noise and complaint, everyone else is nice and chill. It was easy for me to get ahold of the general "rules" of the park. The learning curve in skating different terrain was difficult, but isn't that why you gotta keep trying? How many hours do some people spend practicing at the park? I show up and despite having a very good grasp on how to work my board, I struggle. A lot. I kept at it and got better! The point on limits is well... a limited perspective. Im not very familiar with skateboard tricks, therefore I see the same kickflip or whatever else they call it. I enjoy the majority of skaters in the comments arguing against many of the "hate." Some guy at the park complimented my board, which I dare say is pretty sick. I step on a board and feel so stuck! It doesn't turn! Ah!!! Like, wow. They're different! On my Carver I can ride and turn with one leg for a while, even tighter turns! Hell, I can go surfskate and never touch the ground, carving and cruising for miles. Which. Is a workout oh my God. The comparison thing just doesn't work. Kinda feels like "not to be racist but..." So, be kind? Even to "posers" because you never know who might drop their board and give up because of content like this. Or never pick up a board. Im a female skater of MANY years. People ask me if i "actually" skate. I walk with it and get the looks. The scrutiny. Its so. Uncomfortable. When I see girl skaters of any age I feel so prideful!! Whatever they're riding on. I dont care! There are more important things than the size of your wheels and skape of your deck. Go out and have fun on whatever suits your feet best, and never think you can't tru other things. The fundamentals are all the same. Just push and go. God. Rant over. I could go on for as long as I can skate without touching the ground :)

NGL I love longboarding because it's fun. After some surgery I couldn't do skateboard tricks like I was when I was a kiddie. My granddad used to take me to the park where I would enjoy it when it was empty. After that surgery when I was a youngster, I had to stop doing the things I loved for the sake of my health. As we all grew up, I grew apart because I couldn't do the activities they did. I got into highschool and one of my friends had brought her longboard. I was really curious, you mean I could still skate without doing all the stuff I used to do? I know it seems foolish, yeah but that's what attracted me to them. That rush, that feeling, that excitement was back again. It was like physical therapy and emotional healing. I slowly got into long distance pushing, surf skating, that stuff. I couldn't get that rush with a bicycle I did with a board. Even now my interest has moved into cars and motorcycles. I still board from time to time on modified drop deck that's turned into a pavement surfer. I'll keep it in my trunk for emergencies or if the weather seems right, a nice jaunt around downtown. I've met plenty of former skateboarders who went longboard because they were unable to ride a skateboard like they were younger. A buddy of mine had a bad motorcycle accident and went to longboards, realized he loved bombing hills. Most of the culture of longboarders seem to be secular to skaters. You got these guys who just love doing other sports similar to longboarding like surfing, wave riding, all that. Then you got the grumpy skaters who feel emasculated by someone having a bit of fun.

Unlike skateboarding, longboarding isn't about just "learning the trick" , it's about being able to do it at higher speeds, slide for longer, get better style and more consistently land the tricks. Notice how similar these metrics are to skateboarding ? Not to mention there are literally a hundred different powerslide variations to learn, and then double it for them all learn again switch. It's pretty obvious the creator of this video, did very little research into the actual culture of longboarders. @@guridurituriduri Yep, it's a little nitpicky - I got what you meant. 😅 But actually I wanted to imply that the roots are the same, and in my opinion the kind of gatekeeping skateboarding as done in this video is pretty ridiculous. I "trick skated" for many years and never experienced a rivalry between skateboarding and longboarding - and I can't wrap my head around the "feet or hands on the ground during tricks is bad" either. Ironically in the early 70's skateboarding had developed into an ice-skating like, very regulated "sport", and when the Zephyr Boys who essencially laid the groundwork of skateboarding as we know it today introduced their surfy style in contests it was discussed to disqualify them because they had their hands on the ground occasionally. Appearently modern skateboarding closed the circle and became a ballet style sport again where you have to do flips on stairsets to be considered a "real skateboarder".. For me there is only one skateboarding with many different but equally justified disciplines so to say - I got really excited when I stumbled across the canadian "Concrete Wave" magazine in an airport shop in Prague which featured pool skating, longboarding, downhill, slalom and other racing disciplines which are usually hidden in the shadow of modern streetskating. It celebrated skateboarding as a whole, and although I should have felt offended I found the slogan of a downhill skateboard advertisement really funny: "take a stand - tricks are for kids" For me it's all about fun and creativity. There's a part of a guy in Heroin Skateboards' video "Earth Goblin" who has a foot down at almost every single trick, but it's so creative and produced such impressive street and pool skating that I would prefer it in place of yet another part full of flips down stairs at any time.

I've been to plenty of skateparks big and small with my longboards and everyone I've met is super nice. Don't think I've ever met someone who hates on me because I ride a different kind of board than them. A lot of times, I'll find a group of people and we'll swap out our boards and always have a good laugh on how different they feel. They always mention how secure it feels and how it feels like they could just go anywhere with it. Then I'll always say that because I'm used to my board being longer and heavier I'm not used to a smaller lighter board and it feels like there's nothing under me so I'm actually scared to go down a ramp with it. It's always a good time with other people. You be respectful to them, they'll be respectful back.

I used a long board to get to the skate park. I got clocked by a cop going over the 35 mph speed limit of the road. Do that trick "go fast" "As someone in the skateboarding community for over ten years..." One sentence that explains it all. So you've been skating since 2011? I started skating while you were still swimming in a furry bag.

I used to skate when I was 10, I took my grandkids to a skatepark. Wow what kids do today. I showed what I knew until I fell harder than my age allows. I’m 54 and I exercise regularly (I box) I forgot how much fun it is and how much it hurts. ( I don’t remember it hurting so much) I believe now more than ever that kids need places (free places) to be kids, less skate stops on public benches, more places for bike riding.

Longboarder here. I would put it this way: there are many more posers in the amount of long-boarders at your park than skateboarders at the skatepark. I don't like the mashup of people who buy some cheap-ass board, don't loosen the trucks or change anything about it, and ride it around the riverside getting in people's way (and also carrying it a majority of the time). Get past those people. Longboard in private or on roads and it's a fun activity. Longboard 50 mph down a road with slide gloves and it's an extreme sport.

I have a long board that is meant for street skating: Never summer assault. I used to take it down 3-5 stairs, power slide, and bomb hills. You could Ollie it, but it did not have a curved nose.. so it wasn’t super easy. It’s too bad never summer stopped making boards

Idk man board sports should show love for each other all around. I primarily skateboard but sometimes you just feel like going mk11 down a hill without dying because you didn’t see a small crack in the road. And honestly long-boarding feels more like snowboarding and that’s big w for me.

A big aspect for me is that in my country the roads are shitty and the skate parks are small, few and far between. Also there is the fact that almost no longboard dance moves damage your shoes, neither does a failed attempt damage your board so it is way more cheaper to invest in a good longboard that may easily last over a couple years (with an occasional bearing/wheel change) than switch a board and a pair of shoes every few months. Edit: I still love both and I have a balanced group of skaters and longboarders. I love the style and look of a skateboard rotating in seemingly random directions and landing on it like it is second nature, but I also enjoy the feel and flow of spinning a 7lbs wooden board with "no effort" using a hand and the wavy moves it carves in when you dance on it. Basically ride whatever the fk you want as long as you are a decent human being. Relax and spend your free time as you wish as long as you don't harm anyone.

I just took up longboarding in my 40's after skating in my teens and 20's. My knees and ankles aren't what they used to be, so it's a way to still do part of what I loved. Had a kid with a skateboard ask me to kickflip and my longboard doesn't have a tail. So I used his, told him it'd take a few tries. Always could do a variable heel way easier than kicks because of my ankle injuries. Got it on third, and he then asked me how to do it, because he couldn't. He was cool after that. I was him once, shitting on roller blades until I tried them (not quite my thing, but not being able to bail if something goes wrong gained some respect), so I have no place to judge.

Longboards are not built for doing tricks. You also mention putting your feet or hands on the ground is ugly or disliked when literally some of the most popular skate tricks are boneless, no complys, and hand plants. You don't need to put one million hours into skateboarding to become a "non poser"

Well it’s true. There are a group of gate keeping skaters out there always bashing on everything that isn’t skateboarding. But no one should care what they think anyways. It’s not like they care about what others think either, “counter-culture” or what not. There are lots of supportive skateboarders and long boarders too that truly love the sport, and ride purely for the enjoyment and not just to fit in with the elitist crowd. I say, “Grab any kind of board and just SKATE!”

Dude this vidio and comment section is wack . Skateboards were invented for sidewalk surfing and it evolved from there. Skaters do things now we only dreamed about when I was a kid . I could never ollie let alone kick flip doesn't mean I'm not I'm not skater . I wanted to skate not flip my board around for hours hoping I land on it. Standard board from my day was about 30 inches anything much longer feels awkward to me. I respect the kids these days and their fancy tricks , I have respect for the down hill crowd , I have respect for people who just roll around having a good time . It was a sad day when gatekeeping became part of the skateboarding. In my day the rich kids daddies build them ramps and they thought they were better then us who skated ditches and parking lots . It was really lame Skateboard to me is about freedom without boundaries, go have fun , do your thing and enjoy
