Why People No Longer Read Books | Between the Lines with Palki Sharma
Gone are the days when people sought refuge in libraries, engaging in the age-old pastime of reading books. Now, our noses are assaulted by the sterile aroma of freshly manufactured gadgets, emitting a dull blue light that promises everything and delivers, well, mostly cat videos.
As social media consumes most of our days, books have taken a backseat across the globe with many not even reading a single book in a year. So is reading dead? Palki Sharma tells you on Between the Lines.

I would like to get a content from you on the trend of Indians choosing non-IT job oriented studies. We know even if students choose electronics or mechanical still work on IT. But the data that you present should show the overall trend with Indians choosing the stream of work. This will give us a view to us where Indians will be and how many markets can Indians penetrate into out of IT itself. I know you can add versatile sides to this ask and present even more good informative content. 🙂✌

I LOVE BOOKS . BOOKS ARE THE SOUL OF LIFE The FATTER the fiction/ non fiction book ,the more i love to read it .I have once walked out of a bad movie in the interval and sat and finished a wheel of time series book in the lobby :) . My mother is the one who used to give me books instead of toys to play with a) Retail stores price books ridiculously high so pricing is an issue .Libraries r needed b)Schools& parents & ADHD in folks have contributed to this situation

15 years of reading books every single day! Even if I come home late at night exhausted, I read at least for 10 min, if not 60. There's no better way to learn, evolve and relax than reading books. There is no warm feeling than reading your favourite book on a rainy day, covered in cozy blankets with a cup of coffee in your hand. The smell of fresh books, hiding pieces of an old love such as dry flowers, old photographs, and hazy letters as bookmarks. Oh my my! How could anything digital ever replace that? Books are eternal gifts.

I noticed the decline when all the used bookstores started closing here in CA. Then the mainstream stores started closing down. Now it seems if you want a book you go online. I remember reading every day as a child, and now I'm here on YT on my smart phone. The combining of everything onto your phone has made it a problem for sure. Once we hit the '90's we really hit the sweet spot with technology and real life. I wish we could go back.

I sometimes ask myself if I can possess this type of skill and what it would take to achieve that; I end up giving up thinking. But after watching this video, it seems I have found the true answer: intense focus and deep attention to detail; one way to achieve those two values would be giving more of my time and attention to books, especially physical books. Reading ebooks, listening to audiobooks are also best way of sticking to daily learning practice and adapts to current generation. Nowadays children's are more exposed to visual learning through animations to understand concepts even better which was quite hard when reading via books.. preparation through visual learning aids in creativity, better learning and practical understanding which was impossible in the past where school labs are the only ways for better understanding. Thanks to firstpost and Madam Palki Sharma for this topic and it was quite useful

That's true but learning and understanding is one thing, expression is another. The ability to express and articulate can best be developed by reading books. Same way traditional classroom teaching method cannot be replaced by Online learning, reading books can't be replaced by listening podcasts.

@@achillesglacia7700I somewhat disagree, not completely though. As someone who knows 6 languages, including how to read them at least, a few I can write also, it is not just about expressing oneself. The words can fire one's imagination in ways that is sometimes difficult or different than learning something visually. Giving a small example here. Read a book and then watch a movie. Seldom the movie lives upto your imagination. Also words, when read, can mean something else entirely to one person than it would to another when not expressed vocally/without emotion. We interpret the emotions and meaning for ourselves. This by no means discredits visual learning. Both have their pros and cons.

I too discovered a newfound love for reading during the pandemic. Instead of my usual routine like singing or mindlessly scrolling through my Instagram reels, I decided to explore the world books. There’s something truly magical about the feel of a physical book in your hands, the sensation of turning each pages as you immerse yourself in a different world. It’s been an interesting experience and I am absolutely activated by the power of literature. Reading has become a cherished part of my life and I look forward to exploring more literary adventures. It has become more than a past time, it’s source of joy and inspiration that has enriched my life.

I have never stopped reading since I have known how to read..I fell in love with reading because I'm my little world then, books represented intelligence, who doesn't want to look intelligent...now I got stuck with it.. to read books is my life... Sometimes I think to my self the 3 physical things I may need...things in terms of items are a pen and a paper/notebook and a book to read... If I can have these 3 things with me anywhere .. I cannot be complete and funny people know that about me... I and my books My pen and notebooks I journal my entire think process... Hope my research and discoveries find relevance to the people that will come after me..! The children of children's children ❤❤

Ms Palki Sharma. Spot on. One need to only try the first chapter in Chandler's The Big sleep to enjoy reading - no content in scical media can ever hold a candle to it. Especially when you touch, smell an old book with artists who are born to write....could not a resist a sample of it ......"The main hallway of the Sternwood place was two stories high. Over the entrance doors, which would have let in a troop of Indian elephants, there was a broad stained-glass panel showing a knight in dark armor rescuing a lady who was tied to a tree and didn’t have any clothes on but some very long and convenient hair. The knight had pushed the vizor of his helmet back to be sociable, and he was fiddling with the knots on the ropes that tied the lady to the tree and not getting anywhere. I stood there and thought that if I lived in the house, I would sooner or later have to climb up there and help him. He didn’t seem to be really trying.” ― Raymond Chandler, The Big Sleep

All we need is a good old book. So true! I am currently reading Mailbu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This beautiful book is about family and it shows you how family can be the people that love you more than anything else in the world but also the ones that cause you the most amount of heartbreak. The fact that the entire storyline of this book takes place throughout one single night but you're still able to dive in and know so much about every individual character is a reading experience of its own.

As an English teacher, I strongly recommend that young and inexperienced readers begin with short graded readers such as the Oxford Bookworm Series. These graded readers are intended for second language students and contain many pictures to accompany the texts. The readers are arranged in 6 levels (according to level of difficulty in vocabulary and grammatical structures). I have used them for many years in the Middle East with teenagers and young adults. The students I taught in Riyadh loved them and became very avid readers, gradually building their own home libraries. Many of these stories retell famous English classics and modern stories in language accessible to beginner and intermediate level students. Later, the students can progress to the stories in their original form.

Palki, I’m an avid reader till date. I have a daily reading routine integrated into my life style. I get your point on reading books, but there is one step above to this point. I.e is Learning and enriching our lifestyle and books did that job for so many years. Today for me the learning is thru KZfaq video, audible or a kindle book. Once I understand and finish it, later I decide to buy a hard copy or not. Today the trend is finding combinations of way to first learn about that subject or topic or story and later figure out the best way to further it. So there is paradigm shift in the way we learn and know. 8:17
