Out on the maiden voyage setting up the new Warpig and got to thinking about the awkward setup the previous owner was trying to deal with. Riders trying to get along with the "last guys" suspension or not setting a balanced chassis may not only be knocking people out of the sport... it can be downright dangerous.

Speaking of which, going by the teknik spread sheet my front forks are too stiff and the rear is under sprung 😕 Feels ok to me but this is my 1st bike so buggered if I know how the suspension is “supposed to feel”?

I purchased my DR650 to explore the world of motorcycling, both on the streets and in the woods. The affordable price was a significant factor since I didn't want to spend a substantial amount like $19,000-$20,000 upfront. Now that I've discovered my passion for motorcycling, it has opened the door to trying out various other bikes without breaking the bank as I begin my motorcycle adventure. The DR650 is a very solid option.

It's because of Skids and people like Skids (the rest of us) that make me glad to be a DR owner. It's basically the most slept on bike that has the MOST capability. You can leave it stock and enjoy it as is, you can turn it into a bad boy and enjoy it. It's just the best bike in my opinion. The only time I don't fancy them is when somebody on a sport bike passes me in first gear and I'm in fifth 😂

I bought mine in 96 and still have it. First time on the highway I was looking for 6th and it wasn’t there. I thought it was broke til I looked at the shift pattern by the shifter. 😮

100% nailed it…once the suspension is sorted it is a completely different machine. Suspension is tuned for a riders weight so if you buy somebody else’s bike…it’ll probably be wrong. Also…people screw up preload too much, which makes the bike harsh to ride. Better with right spring and minimal preload. Another great video 👍🏻😁 Bejesus you can ride! 😁

@@outdoorfun8780 180lbs is 80 kgs. The DR is designed around a 75 kg rider, which is why you have no issues. I'm 100kg and I carry a bigger fuel tank. Suspension is specific to the weight of the rider and machine and luggage. My suspension is prefect now...and I can't keep up with anybody. 😀

Mine will be 20 years old come 2025 and I bought it new. Has been an awesome bike. Had regular servicing, carby replaced once and the head bearings just recently. New hoses and the oil cooler mounts welded up after a boar snapped it off altogether. Had the bolt in the rear suspension put in the higher ground clearance hole when it was put together, she's heavy but a good sled. Good riding there mate. Will check out Tekniks as I'll never sell the bike.

Bad suspension on any motorcycle can literally wear you the hell out , even more so on a off road bike .most people are oblivious that they have to change thier suspension for rider and what they will be using it for .I think a lot of people give up for this very reason .

Finally someone that doesn't just assume every forum is right about everything. We've had a few DR's and the only reason we ended up selling them was for long road trips and we can't afford having 2 of each because my wife rides her own DR to. Anyways that bike is very capable stock. I always look for low mileage with a free upgrades so that i can sell the upgrades to make the bike cheaper overall. Last 2 DR's had TM40 and TM42 on them and i couldn't stand them and fuel mileage was out the window. Sold then for over$500 each and never looked back. Great channel and way of thinking to keep it simple and reliable. Keep on riding and *T4S*

Great video showcasing your mad skillz and the super versatile DR. As a newbie rider (and Perth local DR rider) I find it tricky to know how suspension is suposed to feel. I took my dr to endurotech so hope that he set it up as good as it can be. Also have the technics forks mod. Still cant ride like you though... haha.

For a newbie rider the stock suspension is fine for an experienced rider the stock suspension is fine for a pro the stock suspension is fine but they can tell u how to make it better the saying 20% bike 80% rider is true way to many spend way to much on unnecessary shit

I redid the suspension on my first doctor (new springs all around, emulators in the forks and a gold valve in the shock) and it rode like a dream. I did the same to my new dr but it came out way too stiff. Now I feel like Morty after Rick showed him "true level"

Every bike out there, everyone says the same thing...."needs the suspension changed" like a broken record. The DR650 is fine for the novice rider in the trails they can tackle. If you're an advanced rider and rip through rocky trails at 25mph+ then yeah...you're gonna need a suspension upgrade.

So many people take the "she'll be right" path and not play with suspension or settings and miss out on so much. I have a late model KTM 690 with great suspension but it wasn't until I softened off my settings to match my trail speed and dropped the triple clamps by 4mm through the forks did the bike feel comfortable and confident in the sketchy trails.

Always worth that little extra effort ay! The DR is particularly crappy if the springs are too stiff or un balanced due the the non existent valving in the stock unit

I Just purchased a DR 650 in stock condition rode it a few times stock so i can see the changes, I defiantly won't go drastic on carbs air box all that type of stuff, really looking forward to getting the front suspension done. Put springs in the front and pull the snorkel, then call it a day. This bike runs way better and smoother with just the snorkel out.

I've had and rode many bikes, not as many as some. I'll say this, I agree with the tm40 carb mileage, though I must say, its not terrible. It still in my mind justifys the minut gain in torque delivery, though admittedly I never personally screwed enough with the stock bst to the point where I couldn't have squeezed more out of it. I will say that when I swapped my front forks to the showa 40's off a 2003 rmz450 and re did the valving thats what really made riding it a beast. Before I would hit small rocks and such with the Stock forks and feel like I was constantly pinching a tire at high speeds. I've even gotten flats, never liked nitro Moose on a road/ off road bike. Anways it made the ride way more competent, I could go faster and more aggressive with the bike. I dont ride as technical as this guy, he is fantastic. But I do scoot on my Dr. Next is the rear cogent Mohave. Ya, I could do with a re valved setup, or I different donor. But if you're gonna drop the cash on anything it should be suspension.

What did you do to keep the revs so low? You r climbing very steep hill, and at times almost lose momentum , but able to get it going effortlessly. Is it all together tires, carb mode, sprockets? Thanks. Each video is super impressive, keep it going!

For me it's the carb. Everybody is saying it's easy but it's my first bike and I have zero mechanic knowledge. Bought brand new to be able to learn slowly. Read forums all the the time. The BST-Bible. Can't never figure my problems. 40k in 2 years. Now it's shutting down agressively for 1 second while I drive ON/OFF at random moments. Safety switchs are removed, brand new sparkplug, air/fuel screw is set, everything is stock. Always something even though it's suppose to be the easiest bike to work on. I love it but there's never an end. Very happy to have found your channel!

Damn dude, that sucks, what temps and elevation are you at? Ive run three 3 DRs all with carb, box, pipe, dead stock only a little turned out on fuel air screw and couldn't be happier with how they run. But I'm not far from sea level and mild temps. Fuck BST bible

I bought a dr650 and could never get it to run right with the carb, endless fucking around with it. Sold it, was my dream bike for a long time but I owned it for 7months and never took it out of the burbs because it was always had so many problems I didn’t trust going bush.

If your just learning, my recommendation is skip the forums like BST bible , and read litrature on carburators , ignition ,mechanics , small engines etc in general. Get a really solid understanding on how this stuff works so you can diagnose problems yourself, you'll then read forums like bst bible and have a chuckle because everything is so obvious if you just look at whats infront of you on your work bench. If your reading forums to try and solve your problems your really only just poking around in the dark

maybe you wouldn't mind giving us a walkthrough of what it is you are "looking for" when riding. Im a novice and an old guy so likely will never reach your skill, but, id love some tips on how to properly set up a bike suspension. As i ride the DR as well (though mine is stupidly heavily modded... TM40, Full Exhaust, Brittania Fairing, Cogent Mojave Pro/Cogent EMUs, Str8 Rate Spring, and much much more...) it would help to get tips from a rpo like you. Though nicely equipped and in great shape, I bought it used and don't know what to look for in correctly setting this beautiful machine up. Would be cool if you could explain the little details that you are thinking about in terms of ride feel and what to do about it.

You are god tier at trail riding man holy smokes I would be way too scared to do half the stuff you're doing casually. I aspire to get as good as you on my dr650. My problem is how do I know your sag is off, my bike is set for a 250 lbs with cogent suspension and i am 220-230 lbs should I change it at all, does it make a difference how would I be able to say "oh yes I need to adjust X and it will be much better" I am just too inexperienced to know that sort of thing

You should be about in the ballpark if both springs are rated to that weight and you have revalved. Google "DR650 Sag" or even suspension sag in general to get a better idea. Problem is once the DR is set up with luggage gear etc the static sag can be way off, but just shoot to get your ride sag decent and balanced front to rear

What sag and fork height do you find works for you? I've been making improvements to mine, but am finding the short travel in the rear makes it hard to decide how stiff (collapsing vs too stiff). *And I absolutely had to rip off the bar risers the previous person added.* They might be fine for standing tall on a light gravel road, but made it hard to get weight far enough for actual off-roading and made it hard to avoid arm pump.

hmm not sure, somewhere around 80mm ride sag, will hafta check n get back to ya. I go by feel and find it differs due to a lot of variables. you dont happen to be running 44/15 with stock chain length?

Not even half the skills of you, but I ride my DR on very similar trails (I do usually find a way around the logs). The Cogent front valve and rear shocks seem to work perfect for me. This is good since my eyes generally glaze over when suspension adjustment theory is discussed...hurts my head.

Everything you're saying sounds correct to me, the reason why I say sounds is because I honestly have no idea cause I'm a new rider. With that being said, how do I know if my suspension is out of whack as a new rider. I'm looking at buying a DR today, and I'm coming off of a CRF250l Rally with notoriously bad suspension. Is it as "simple" as making sure it's sprung correctly for my weight and the sag is correct for my weight. Experienced people like yourself are able to know when something is off because they know how it should feel. But if I don't really have a baseline for how it should feel, I'm not sure how to know if something is wrong. Any thoughts?

if its sprung for your weight you will be pretty close, if you then get revalved rear and emulators front then the bike can feel as good as any bike.

Yikes, I went way too stiff on the front. 0.65 rate fork springs, big tank, 80kg rider, another 10-20kg in gear and rear luggage bag. I did have progressive rate springs, but I don't think I adjusted my emulators properly either. I have an 8.1 cogent Mojave which seems to be decently in range when I'm loaded up, still a bit stiff. At least c+r is adjustable on it. I did the race tech cartridge emulators on the front and it was a huge pain to install. Feel like I should have kept it stock or just upped the rate slightly

Dual sport bikes are the most fun bikes. I've owned sport bikes and high end ADV bikes but nothing beats a cheap Japanese dual sport.

I've got to do the suspension on my bike its dangerous the way it is now, Im not even going to bother with the stock front forks, I'll find a set of 48mm MX forks like of a crf yzf or rm etc, then get the lot tuned in one hit. Even if you buy a ktm your still mucking around with the suspension. When owning machines like the DR you really need to be mechanically inclined, the goes for vintage bikes which the DR really is. I get as much out of working on/building bikes as I do riding them, that is the person who the DR really suits.

I've always had the Honda's, the 500cc first in 84 or 5, then the 600, never owned one of them, then the XR650L and never had the XR650R either. But the Dr was always to much street for me to really enjoy! But I'm almost 20yrs since i could abuse a bike. I became disabled in 2003. But i can still balance a bike, and promised the wife not to ride alone. So the DR might be ok! But that 25lbs, and shit suspension might be the decider!..lol..from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 👋🤠 but man, i can save a bundle buying the big Suzi!! I'm still 6'5"tall nowadays, only 180lbs no muscle left! If you like rotary/Wankle thing's I have a Wankle Suzuki RE5 1975 model!

The 606 is fine, it's got a pretty stiff sidewall, doesn't seem to want to slip around the rim too easily, so lower the tyre pressure down a fair bit, makes a big difference. My considered opinion is most people run too much pressure in tyres, front and rear, it's the best way to achieve maximum grippage across a range of conditions. PS, Techniks are an awesome suspension firm, been around a long time, a wealth of experience.

I find the opposite, people attempting to fix bad suspension with flat tyres. I don't run low pressures unless in deep dry sand, just feels wallowy and prone to smashing rims

The one or two, in my case, bikes I will never sell, are my 2 DR 650s, one is 18 years old the other 9 years old, both bought new. I don’t use them for single track, mainly bitumen and dirt road touring type stuff, one has the suspension done and a few bits added, the older one is basically stock apart from running a TM 40 carb, it has done 500,000 Klms and worn out 2 carbs, the stocker and a TM 40, the TM 40 was cheaper to buy than a stock replacement and it was swapped between my 2 bikes so done a shed load of kilometres. My 9 year old bike is being shipped over to Europe and will be getting ridden all over there, I could have bought a bike in Europe but what can you get that will be better than a DR 650 ? Especially one that is set up for travelling. After a total of 18 years and 800,000 klms the DR 650 is the best bike I have owned, I am 63 and ridden bikes for over 40 years both off and on road, and ridden almost every day, rain hail or shine, the cheapest, reliable bang for buck out there bar none.

@@jsf8145 tough one to say which bike would suit your needs, the 650 is heavier but the seat is lower and the engine is less revs, the 400 is lighter but a lot taller in the seat and the engine revs harder. If you plan just to ride dirt roads and maybe longer 2 or 3 day trips the 650 will carry gear easier, for just day rides with a bit of harder riding the 400 would be better, the 400 I’d a lot more trail oriented, the 650 more dirt and asphalt road. If you have long legs get the 400, it is better for beginners to learn on and try more off road IMHO. I just bought a 400 and so far I do like it but at 5’9” it is tall.

@@whitedrguy6503 appreciate the food for thought. Will keep this comment in mind. I’m about 6’1” I’m leaning more towards the 400 due to its lighter weight and the fact I don’t desire to spend much time on the busy highways. I don’t really care to ride over 50 mph on backcountry roads, hitting a deer, etc. I just want to cruise 30 mph and explore forest roads in the backcountry Idaho with my fly rod for short day trips sight seeing, etc.

I detest the D606, and suspect you're not gonna enjoy it. Great tyre for an average trail plodder, horrible when you push even mildly.

Im a very light rider at 59 kilograms, do you think the stock suspension would be alright for me? I like to have my fun but i definitely dont ride as agreessive as you. Thank for another great video!

Yep I reckon that could work just fine for you. Crank the rear shock compression clicker all the way in, add preload spacer to fork until about flush, 140 -130mm air gap of 15W oil, and set rear preload to suit. I find this fine even for my riding at 75kgs, it's only when loaded or hitting whoops I really NEED the upgrades.

My first DR I put plex valves in forks, could never get them right, Tekniks Platinum valves I put in my current DR are way better for plushness and compliance

@@SKIDSnSTUFF im only guessing but i think the reason the teknik work better (plusher more compliant) is because he has designed them to work with very light oil and when you install then with correct very light oil the existing damper rods don’t do much damping and its all done by the drop in valve

Im just about to get my RE license and it honestly looks like nothing comes close to this bike unless i get an enduro which will need lots of maintenance or in 2 years i can get my R license and own a 690/701 and deal with the reliability issues aha Are there any other bikes i should be looking at before i pull the trigger? A used DR is selling for the same price as a new bike since they stopped selling them in Australia which doesn't make it feel like a good buy even if it's the better bike 😕

Keep an eye out and decent deals come up for kitted out DRs. This is prolly the best option if it fits yours needs, other possibilities I'd be eyeing are DRZ400, CRF300, WR250r

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. I've looked at both the drz and crf in person. The drz build quality seems far superior but just worry I'll hate using it on the freeway compared to the dr and crf. My biggest concern with the crf is the power to weight ratio in sand. I'm in WA and the sand can be very soft that I think it would be more work than fun with that bike Soon I'll be able to test ride bikes which will help 🙂

I sold mine and my Brother inlaws(I rode it far more than he did) because of vibration, heavy(not many light 650's), rubbish suspension $$$ for Ohlins and by far the poor ergonomics(foot peg to seat and bar measurements)

People mostly move on from the DR because they want to look cool on a GS when they show up at the coffee shop. Cool people ride DR650's, posers ride other bikes....lol. Obviously, there are better dual sports from KTM, KTM sub-brands, and the Honda 450RL. But they come at a financial and reliability cost. I would love to have a 450RL or a 500 EXC-F. They are better, but still not perfect stock. I think I'm going to sell my VFR800 and 250xc and get the VSTROM 800DE for longer, less technical adventure riding. The DR still gets me in and out of the deep woods. Sometimes dragging a broken down KTM or GS.

crf450l/rl is a massive flop, it lacks the power of the 450x it replaced and still has the reliability issues and short maintenance intervals. it's still got all the shortcomings of a 450 play bike small fuel tank, no subframe and they stall at idle easily.

I think people over think and over spend money on suspension instead of just spending time in the saddle learning how to ride them properly then the misso says ya need to sell that bike and instead of saying I'd rather a divorce they sell them

Ffs I was looking at one to A have transportation when my wife takes the car. B go down gravel roads to snorkel at beaches that might be too rough for my Honda pilot, or when my wife has the pilot. This guy is talking through trails harder than anything I’ve ridden in my life! So yeah I’m going to assume this will do! ( have to carry my 5 year old and snorkeling gear for two)
