You're not going to find anyone to replace Pete's production. Good luck to Mets fans expecting more from his spot in the lineup. That doesn't mean Pete can't be traded if the price is right. It just means they will miss his presence and i wouldn't suggest they make a move unless its a phenomenal return. Its very hard to imagine Soto signing with the Mets. The Yankees will be diligent in locking him down and he's having a fantastic year with a team that has a winning history. Add to that the fact that he'd have Yankee fans constantly voicing their displeasure at him for going to their crosstown rival.......i think the contract offer would have to be significantly higher to get him in a Mets uniform. Add to that the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium and it only seems more likely he remains in pinstripes.

It's a matter of spending money effectively. You don't allot double the salary to obtain 15% more production.

I think we can keep Pete. We just have to see him for what he is, which is not the superstar we try to force him to be. He’s a great home run hitter and sometimes reliable. That’s it. Pay him as such. And keep him in the 3 spot

Shohei Otani has 91 hits in 288 AB's Alonso has 68 in 280 AB's Mark Vientos 32 hits in 101 Ab's Since Batting average ia an anethma to millenials I used the plain English version. Mostly what I want to indicate here is the huge cavity Alonso represents in the middle of the lineup even when he's performing average. (which he is at the moment only 7 points down from his career numbers) It's no coincidence that as soon as a reliable .300 hitter was moved in front of him. (Not behind for "protection" like everyone was clamoring for this offseason) The Mets started scoring in bunches. The host keeps waiting for Pete to "come around" i get it. Blind loyalty is sometimes part of being a fan. Time for this host to realize that WYSIWYG with Pete. We have a large enough sample size to know that he is what he is. In fact his .270 campaign is in danger of becoming an outlier.

Agreed no matter the run he’s on trade him. I think he’ll play in a hitter friendly, West coast team and his numbers will increase but he’s not correct for the Mets. I’d sell high on him and Jeff and I think that’s why he was in the line up cause Iglesias was hitting .400 when he was benched

@@emiliothepoet *Nods. I love Pete as a number five. He has the perfect profile for it. What i don't want to see is the Mets giving him #4 money in addition to clogging up that four hole with that unclutch .250 for years to come. Alvarez is just a pup and he's already showing signs of being a better clutch performer. Let some other team play homerun roullette with this guiy, I'd rather a clutch single when we actually need it.

I hate Analytics. Nothing matters but homers. Stolen bases , bunts and batting average aren't positives, strikeouts aren't negatives, and a walk is as good as a hit. If you had said such things to a longtime baseball professional in the 20th Century he would have said you are an idiot.

Question would be can the Mets get a better trade package than a 4th round pick for Alonso. I think if the Mets paid his full salary and maybe even packaged him with someone like Severino that the Mets could get a good return for him that would help the Mets more long term. The Mets don’t have a deep farm system with a lot of top quality major league ready talent. Mets should pick the best offer of prospects that are major league ready and do the deal.

YES! The Mets are not a juggernaut. If they want to build a championship-caliber team, they need to build from within. This is not a championship-caliber team. In order to contend with, and beat teams like the Dodgers and the Phillies, they need to develop young, talented core players.
@fr2ncm9

Selloff at the deadline. The Mets still have Vientos, Alvarez, Mauricio and Baty. Not to mention players like Jett Williams, Acunua, Christian Scott, and Jonah Tong. If they do it right, the Mets could be a true, long-term championship-caliber team like the Phillies.

Ryan O’Hearn as the long side of a platoon. Against lefties Vientos starts at 1B and Mauricio takes 3B or maybe Baty if he can fix his swing in AAA and become the player we thought he would be. O’Hearn can play corner OF as well…..positional flexibility is never a bad thing.

So many people forget about how hard it is to do what Pete has already done. Think about all the busts we have had. Conforto, Ike Davis, Wilmer Flores, Lucas Duda, I know I'm forgetting some other recent players but Pete has produced and produced in our ball park which is incredibly difficult. If he can hit 50 bombs here, I hate to say it but what do you think he could do at god forbid but Philly or Yankee Stadium? He could probably hit 70 HRs at those small ball parks...

I think the issue many Mets fans have with Pete is the old “we lost with you, we can lose without you” line. Looking back at his career, 2019 was pretty good as a team but we missed the playoffs. 2020-21 were bad losing seasons under Rojas, 2022 was a great season, but had the biggest Mets collapse since 2007, and then last year was terrible. This year has a couple of great winning streaks and a terrible month of May. So the idea of running the same lineup out (Lindor, Nimmo, Alonso and friends) for 7 more years and hoping for different results is a bit underwhelming. Now we could have a better support in cast for those three, or better pitching, but a lot of people are hoping the future has different stars that are currently in the minors.

I like Pete and what he brings, but he's pretty limited as a player and has a skillset that is probably going to age really poorly. If he hits 40 homers, that's awesome, but last season he was below average in pretty much every other aspect of the game. If we are being honest with ourselves, he's not half the player Freddie Freeman or Matt Olson are. I don't think they should overpay just because he's home grown, and having the extra money we were going to pay him could open up all kinds of interesting paths for us.

Why is Olson or Freeman twice the player Pete is??? Olson strikes out more than almost everyone in the entire league and Freeman is older than Pete. I can't agree that Pete is second fiddle to either of them at this point in his career.

Scott Boras is salivating over Alonso's contract renewal. It will be massive. He's 30 yrs old and here we go again - watch Cohen sign him to a 10 year deal that'll take him to the age of 40, instead of pouring all of that money into building the best farm system in baseball. Cohen has ruined this franchise.

WTF? The guy just spent about 90 million trading Verlander and Scherzer so we could get premium prospects back. Cohen has prioritized the farm system! Yes he did “go for it” which led to a 101 win season. It didn’t end like we wanted to but it was the right move when you have a generational talent like DeGrom.

Go down the list (DeGrom, Sherzer, Verlander, Marte, Senga, Nimmo, Lindor, Diaz, Rondon, Cole, Stanton) - all the pitchers are hurt or sub par, and all the hitters are massively under performing. The most valuable players on the Mets and Yankees are the guys making the league minimum or close to it (Volpe, Schmidt, Wells, Cabrera, Gil, Marinaccio, Alvarez, Vientos, Torrens ... The only reason they even are able to make it here is because this team was filled with those kinds of guys when they all came in. so although in NY, the team itself was more of their Vibe.
