I had a 42 year career in Pharmacy and discovered that the last thing that I wanted to do was be a retail pharmacist. I found that you can use a Pharmacy degree to go in a lot of different directions. I ended up in Hospital Pharmacy management and enjoyed it most of the time. Other options are Compounding Pharmacy, Nursing Home Pharmacy, Research, FDA, DEA, Military. I even know a Pharmacist who went into criminal justice and became a Forensic Pharmacist. Also, another Pharmacist became a legal researcher and work for a law firm. So, look around, get varied rotations and try different aspects of Pharmacy and you will find your niche. It is a good profession but retail is tough. Good Luck

That's interesting! I've spoken with quite a few Irish community pharmacists in the last three years that have sentiments that oppose this view - especially with regards to community pharmacy in Ireland (dealing with the government schemes in community pharmacy is a nightmare in comparison to other countries like the UK). I've heard that the salary in hospital pharmacy in Ireland is not too great and that in general, the pharmacy profession in Ireland is just not as valued.

@@sheabutterandroses I was fresh out of college walking into a high paying job when I first wrote that post, but a year post grad now I can understand why the pharmacists you spoke to felt that way, particularly in community pharmacy. While the salary is still excellent in comparison to other career paths with the a similar time investment imo (particularly if you're a locum pharmacist), the stress levels can be through the roof and the scheme system in this country is years behind the UK and other countries. Regarding hospital pharmacy, I have heard that talks between hospital pharmacists and the HSE are ongoing re salary increases but I do agree that hospital pharmacists are drastically undervalued, especially in comparison to community pharmacists.

I believe that before even enrolling in undergrad, students need to work in customer service and find out how well they can handle complaints and irate customers. If students dislike this part of customer service, they will not enjoy dealing with the complaints that many healthcare providers, such as retail and hospital pharmacists, receive. This would be a case when students should not dream of those careers. I say this because I hope this can save students time and money in their schooling.

I discovered nuclear pharmacy and have been extremely happy with my career at one of the best hospitals in the country. If you're passionate about chemistry and medications look into nuclear, industry, and plenty of other options for pharmacists outside of retail. Also, I'm a strong believer in public colleges. Pharmacy goes beyond money. So as you said, if you're going for the money, don't try. If you're passionate, definitely go for it. However, I think doing pharmacy gives you a lot of job opportunities.... The commonest yet choking part is the hospital and retail. However, with the skills you'll develop and knowledge you'll get in pharmacy, you just have to think outside the box to make decent money. Also, with the way things are going, no matter which field you find yourself in, to get lots of money, you'd have to set up your own business..... Applies to doctors, nurses, graphic designers, whatever course..... To make wealth, you MUST set up YOUR own business.

Let me stop you right there. Independent pharmacies are dying because of poor insurance reimbursements. The Supreme Court recently ruled that PBM's now have to pay at least the cost of the med. Independent pharmacies are STILL getting negative reimbursement rates from PBM'S. I worked at 4 different independently owned pharmacies and they ALL closed for the same reason: poor insurance reimbursement.

@s v My comment was a reaction to the racist statement of Sirgrowsalot... Comparing evil to evil doesn't make any sense. However, once someone from the USA calls a random German a Nazi while American history is based on slavery during which over 20 Million African people had been murderend, massive on the genocide of indigenous peoples, provocation of wars in the middle east, still a large racism towards people of color, etc., then I of course have to react! I am not saying, every American is a racist and an evil person with an evil past. But if an American wants to call me a Nazi for no reason, just because I feel sorry for you to pay so much for your education while here it is for free, which was my wish for all of you (what a Nazi-thing to do!), then I want to remind such people of the fact, their past had not been any better... I finally decided to get out of pharmacy. It’s not what it used to be. 1) There are too many schools of pharmacy that have opened up. 2) Some schools have lowered their qualifications since I was in school. 3) Corporations like Walgreens and CVS are more focused on metrics that have no impact on patient care such as signing people up for reward programs and getting a prescription filled in 15 minutes or less. 4) Staff has been cut down to the bone. It has become more like working in a fast food setting than a professional environment. 5) The respect we get as medical professionals has declined.

I used to watch Paul’s videos on how to get into pharmacy school when I was in undergrad. Now as a P3 I’m banging my head wondering why did I miss his video about why pharmacy school might be a bad idea lol. I think a lot of other people in pharmacy school or practicing pharmacists would say the same thing now, but a few might say this is a pessimistic view. My suggestion to those thinking about pharmacy school: do your own research too and HONESTLY ask yourself if you’re passionate about pharmacy. But whatever you do, don’t listen to universities when you’re trying to decide if pharmacy is the right profession for you, they will be biased and want you to to go to pharmacy school.🤑

I hear this all too well, i am a pharm tech and majority of my pharmacists now say they wouldnt do it again if given another chance. Some say they wished they wouldve done residency to get into a hospital setting. Retail pharmacy is the worst! I hear and see the stress the pharmacist go through. Corporate always breathing down your necks because your pharmacy “numbers” are not met or whatever. They say patient care is something the care about but its not! Corporate only cares about numbers! The work and life balance at a retail sector is not good either! I personally wanted to become a pharmacist but after working at a retail pharmacy for 3 years, i am now convinced i dont want to anymore. Its not the salary, its the life style and corporate decisions that makes it hard to become a pharmacist (retail).

Interesting video... I agree to an extent.. I still am optimistic about pharmacy.. There is a lot of different roles in pharmacy rising, concierge specialty etc people making their own pharmacy consulting buisness... It depends on where you go, you can still get good pay in some aspects of pharmacy.. When i first graduated i got into specialty and it was good pay, And there are some growth in different areas of pharmacy. In the bls report it also stated that hospital sector will be increasing job impact as well. But i agree that if you have passion you should get in.. If you absolutely don't and just want to for the money you shouldn't get into it, pharmacy is about patient care not just money.

I have seen young people make the worst decision of their life choosing this profession. I have hired many depressed and broke pharmacist crying over their debt which may become impossible to pay this will run you down and ruin your physical and mental health. There is no need for pharmacists there are no jobs and automation will probably destroy the profession within a decade. Pharmacy school has been the biggest scam colleges have pulled pumping job market demand fake numbers. This is a declining profession and you are doing a great service spreading the message to stop people from making a decision that will ruin their life.

Medicare part D and Obamacare, which dramatically increased the government's rule over medication coverage, has destroyed pharmacy. After paying for rent/lease, utilities, staffing, maintenance, etc. making $3 per prescription makes filling drugs a breakeven business. Because of this, pharmacies had to cut staffing and had to take on other, better margin paying parts of healthcare, such as vaccinations, testing, etc. For example, we had a patient that had a $22,000 special order, drop-shipped from the manufacturer drug. After spending 15 minutes on the phone getting this thing covered by the insurance, ordering it with the risk of the patient not picking it up and demanding his script back to go somewhere else, our after drug costs profit was $5.28 on this script. It's not worth dispensing drugs.

@@user-lu6yg3vk9z Yes, I actually was so paranoid about it after doing research I reached out to the Dean of VCU's Pharmacy school (my number 1 choice) to have a meeting and discuss whether pharmacy was saturated or not. After I had that meeting with him I still wasn't convinced. I still applied and got accepted but decided that I need to take my life in another direction. So I started preparing for the MCAT and become a doctor like my sister. I was getting the scores I needed to get accepted but I decided that I wouldn't be happy as a physician even if I made a lot of money. Seeing as my sister is overworked and miserable. So now I'm doing what I lowkey wanted to do from the beginning. Which is going into tech and engineering.

pharmacy is really general and flexible , you have alot of career options. For me, I made it as a hobbie , I work as a part-timer in a retail pharmacy. Its really fun and self rewarding. eventho, I tried working in a retail pharmacy as a full timer before , i didnt really like it , it feels like a job for an old man and it is stressful to be in one place for 9 hours shift. The good thing , that it is a stable job , and if you are working in a medium busy retail pharmacy you will have a lot of time to run and think about another business that you can do online while waiting for the patients to come in.

How would you compare the market for someone looking to do retail vs residency and then clinical?
@KillerKristen1
@KillerKristen1 4 жыл бұрын
Dan Lee I’m a 3rd year pharmacy student so done a fair amount of internships by now. Still find it hard to get a feel for the clinical outlook. Of course every retail pharmacist has told me to stay far away but I get mixed reviews from clinical pharmacists.

yah clinical/industry is way better. The BLS report is skewed cause of retail pharmacy. If you actually read the report (which apparently people can't do) clinical and industry are growing.

It is dead. This year is the worse for residency. It is predicted that this year there will be 10,000 residency applicants for 4,000 positions, if not more. Current residents can't find jobs and are worried about what they will be doing. 2019 graduates in Oregon have gone back to their old jobs to pay the interest on their loans.
