Why Planes Don't Fly Faster

Why are planes slow? Everything else is speeding up: smartphones, the Internet, the pace of life in general! So when are we going to get a superfast passenger jet that can cross continents in the time it takes to watch just one inflight movie versus several?
Speed has always interested engineers and pilots. At least at first, they were pretty good at getting these metal birds to fly faster and faster. As long ago as in 1945, a German test pilot reached a speed of 610 mph. But then, something happened and speed stopped growing. Any guesses why?

SUMMARY:
- If you’ve ever stuck your hand out the car window, then you know how much force air can have. You don’t feel anything if the car isn’t going that fast.
- Just imagine the aerodynamics of a plane flying faster than 767 mph. Air particles, which used to move around the plane in a kind of circle, now can’t keep up the pace.
- Flying at supersonic speeds against all that pressure from the air in front of you is like trying to run through a crowd.
- Still, there was a case in 1985 when a Boeing 747 survived a fall at supersonic speed.
- But what about planes actually meant to fly faster than sound? They have sharp edges and straight lines - unlike the softer contours in subsonic planes. They also have arrow-shaped or triangular wings.
- There were 2 jets used for commercial flights too: the British-French Concorde and the Soviet Tupolev TU-144. These bad boys could reach speeds of about 1,550 mph at a height of 60,000 ft.
- The fate of TU-144 was dramatic and short-lived. It was only used for 3 years from 1975 to 1978 with just the last 6 months being commercial.
- Concorde burned through 5,600 gallons of fuel per hour, while a Boeing 747 uses 4,600 in that time.
- On top of that, when Concorde started flying across the Atlantic in the ‘70s, the 1st-class cabins did have bigger seats than economy, but they still weren’t very comfortable.
- And that’s probably for the best. Aviation engineers have worked out ideal shapes of planes and the most efficient speed.
- The faster the plane is flying, the more the engines have to work. If the engines are constantly on full-blast, they don’t last as long and need to be replaced or repaired more often.
- After all these years of experimentation, aviation engineers have found the ideal speed of flight: 560 mph.

The Musk Jet, developed by Tesla (might be in cooperation with SpaceX) is an advanced electromagnetic propulsion system that uses no fuel but air and electricity. It can be used on supersonic and even hypersonic passenger planes, and it’s twice as efficient as normal jet engines. Possibly an MHD? It will have a cool plasma exhaust, and you should not stick your head to any of these engines while they are on.

Thanks for making the video. Also one of the reasons super-sonic commercial planes didn't last long was due to the sonic boom which made the planes restricted to only trans-Atlantic flights.
@feeberizer

Concorde: 1) The original program cost of £70M soared to £1.3B along with numerous delays meaning fewer planes were built. Only Air France and British Airways purchased and operated the aircraft...seven each. 2) Due to the increased unit price, a round trip from New York to London in 1997 was $7,995 USD ($12,780 USD today) making it cost prohibitive for all but the rich. 3) The sonic boom limited where the plane could fly which meant only ocean crossings. London, Paris, New York, Dulles in Virginia, and Barbados were the only airports used by the two airlines. 4) Consumer confidence decreased sharply with the crash at the Paris airport in 2000. All 100 passengers and 9 crew members were killed on takeoff. 5) Concorde last flew in 2003 due to the downturn in airline travel post Sept 11th and the end of the Airbus maintenance contract. Side bar: Back in 1980 I was sitting in a British Airways 737 waiting for takeoff from Heathrow in London. The captain informed us that we would be delayed while the Concorde took off. Even inside the 737 I had to plug my ears with my fingers because Concorde was SO LOUD. The 737 shook and I could feel the rumble in my chest. The only other aircraft I saw with the same power was an SR-71 taking off from Boeing's Payne Field after an airshow in the late 80s. I'm very thankful I got to see both magnificent birds in flight before they were retired.

Another reason that wasn't addressed: The present-day air traffic control system isn't designed to deal with "faster" aircraft. Take the case of the Convair aircraft of the 1960's ... in particular the CV-880 and then the CV-990, which were designed to compete with the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 aircraft families ... yes, they were "faster", but that speed didn't make it easy to fit into the air traffic control system's spacing requirements on the V and J airways ... so they had to slow down to maintain spacing intervals ...

Aerodynamics for supersonic flight is radically different than subsonic flight. In subsonic flight the airplane rides on the air in front of the wings whereas in supersonic flight the airplane flies ahead of the shock wave in a nose down position. This change in the lift requires that the plane be able to shift it's center of gravity aft to balance the plane and likewise when returning to subsonic flight goes the need to shift the center of gravity aft. This is normally accomplished by shifting fuel fore and aft. Also, the flight controls become less functional since the air slip stream moves aft when reaching supersonic which then flows over, instead of across, the flight controls. Aircraft that fly supersonic have have larger flight controls that move into the slip stream instead of flight surfaces like elevators and ailerons. Many years ago, during the age when airplanes were being designed for supersonic flight, engineers discovered the benefit of moving engines closer together to allow the plane to stay supersonic if one engine failed. When the engines are out on the wings the power between left and right side of the airplane needed to be maintained. Lose power on one left engine then you pull back on the opposite engine to avoid a yaw motion but in cutting power back the plane soon drops to subsonic and you need to update your fuel balance to keep the center of gravity correct. Subsonic is so much easier and simpler to design and maintain.

Flight lengths also vary on the direction and strength of the wind and could possibly make differences in the hours. Boeing plans to fix any issues with its current models before moving on to the next generation of aircraft, but Boeing is making great strides in partnership with NASA to be expand the horizons of space travel and the newly announced Artemis program to bring humans back to the moon and on to Mars.

Actually, the Concorde aircraft were grounded due to metal fatigue. The pressurized fuselage expands a lot once it gets hot at high altitudes, then shrinks a lot when it cools down on the ground. This constant extreme expansion & contraction of the metal caused it to unexpectedly weaken & break. This made the useful life expectancy of the aircraft to be much shorter than originally planned. They where way too expensive to be replaced with a new Concorde sooner than expected. They were also expensive to fly & maintain. All of them showing signs of metal fatigue were grounded, & nobody wanted to buy a new replacement Concorde with such a short an operating life expectancy & high operating costs. So soon, all of them were grounded & not replaced. Not enough people were buying tickets to ride them to justify the costs of replacing, maintaining, & flying them.

I may be wrong, but watching old documentaries about pioneers of flying and test pilots, they indeed mentioned sound barrier as a major factor of all troubles to fly a plane very close to the speed of sound, but they also were saying that reaching the speed of sound was very risky and dangerous, but the moment they have reached and crossed that barrier the fly changed completely, and they reported it to be smooth and without any turbulence. Strange then to see you talking about an experience of running among the crowd of people. Never mind. Have a good day. Cheers.

Besides the sonic boom issue, there's the issue of safe air traffic control. The 1960 crash over New York City between a DC-8 and a Constellation airliner caused the FAA to change rules on air traffic control all over the USA, and as such it actually slowed down transcontinental flights as pilots had to maintain very strict separation and flight route controls.

i never understood why concorde was such a fuel guzzler, it flew twice as high than regular planes, meaning less drag, ok its engines had to push harder, but for less time meaning fuel consumption might be more per minute but should balance out as it flies less minutes to get from a to b.

Double your speed will quadruple the air resistance. More resistance means higher fuel consumption. it's as simple as that! Also, IF you wanted to build a passenger plane which is super fast (as the Concorde) you'll face a lot of obstacles. 1. Heat build-up due to the air resistance. 2. Fuel consumption. 3. People complaining about the noise. 4. As a result of all this...higher ticket pricing. 5. service on this plane will be costly.

A person on the ground hears a sonic boom because several seconds of the normal sound of the aircraft arrive all at once at the listeners ears. This is due to the the relative positions of the plane and person along with the speed of sound and the speed of the plane. If a person could travel the same path on the ground and at the same speed as the plane then they would in effect experience a continual sonic boom.

Well, in the 70s, it's quite easy to build a supersonic military aircraft, I don't see why it's hard to adapt the technology for civilian aircraft. Boeing at the time have plan for Boeing 2707, which used the engine based on the XB-70, which have been proven to be capable of cruising at Mach 3 back in the early 60s.
@mickeyg7219
@mickeyg7219 5 жыл бұрын
@flip inheck To be fair, material science doesn't advance along well with the engine/fuselage design. XB-70's cruising speed is cited as "Mach 3.0" and its top speed is cited as "Mach 3.1." It can sustain that speed because it use a lot of titanium and sandwich-structured composite panels. The XB-70 program, actually all supersonic bombers were, made obsolete by the ICBM. Not that the aircraft doesn't work as intended. No aircraft can maintain a speed above Mach 2.25 for a sustained period of time without using a lot of titanium. Concorde and most supercruise-capable aircraft were limited to less than Mach 2.25, it's basically a cutoff of when the aircraft would need to be built extensively out of stronger materials to fly safely. The US already have a successful aircraft that can cruise at Mach 2 in the 60s, and it have made a world record of the longest supersonic flight, the B-58 Hustler, and it was made out of pretty standard materials for the aircraft. The reason why the US couldn't make a Concorde clone is because it set its goal too high. It's not like that Concorde's design was that much of a secret, after all, people have managed to steal military secrets from the USSR before. Sorry for the long comment, just having too much fun with nerd mode.

There was an incident with concorde in early 2000 caused by a piece of metal from a dc10 airplane. After the incident they had to modify the concorde making it more resistant by changing the wheels, adding kevlar to concorde s body, reinforcing the wires and so on. All of that cost a lot so they decided to end it otherways concorde would have continued to fly. Also people got scared to fly on a corcorde after that incident

At 3:21, . . . "Planes usually reach supersonic speed far from city airports . . ." Back during the 1950s and 1960s. it was common for military aircraft to cross the U.S. at supersonic speed. So, an occasional sonic boom was normal and was no big deal.

So then see, @@dongrainer6405? Maybe it _is_ big enough for them to add seats to it if they moved existing rows close enough together. A complete failure to mention that the US aviation sector was against the Concorde programme when the aircraft was first introduced into service in the 1970's. If US airlines had bought the aircraft, costs could have been reduced due to more being built. Boeing and the US aircraft manufacturers didn't like Europeans building better aircraft. SO they persuaded flying restrictions to be put on flights into JFK etc

A big reason the pursuit of supersonic travel stopped is because of the boom. It's not a single boom that happens, but rather like a wake coming off a boat. The sound of a boom continues along the ground to anyone below the aircraft. The FAA doesn't allow for continental supersonic flights because of this. Another great thing you could have added was NASA's current research into quiet supersonic flight. Check out their X-59 project.
