Cities Skylines 2 has shown some player number improvement but the numbers are still not great - despite Paradox dropping DLC, the opening of the Paradox Mod Store and a huge Patch, players are not returning to Cities Skylines 2 - WHY? Is there something else going on? I have tried to arrived at a logical number to find out how many people are still playing Cities Skylines 2 and how many players have left.

The problems in my opinion are: 1. The core game is good and the features that they announced in October were great BUT they are not working properly or not working at all, like the economy no matter what you do you’ll keep making money easily. Adding public transportation won’t affect the traffic…etc I think The problem as you’ve said, the people are bored with playing a zoning simulator, the deep simulation that they have promised is not working. We need more challenges while building our cities (harder economy, more management aspects…) At the end this is a city building game not a city painter. The game needs to be fixed ! 2. The performance issues, i would assume that not all of the 1,5 million people that bought the game have an rtx 4090. There is countries where buying the rtx costs an arm and a leg, in my case, in my country a gaming pc that can handle the game will cost a 10 months salary ! The performance needs to be optimized ! 3. Lack of assets and content, after 8 years from the first game release you would expect at least 70% of all content in the first game (taking into account the dlcs content) will be included in the base game but no, they released a game where even basics are lacking 4. The graphics are bad tbh for a 2023 game and lack of animations, there is no details ! The grass looks like a green flat painting with no texture, the snow looks like a white layer with no details. Some trees and houses back yards won’t turn into white when it snowing ! The rain won’t make the roads wet, and the snow doesn’t affect the roads, what ?! The trees look poorly detailed, the roads looks faded, there is no animations for road maintenance (pathholes for example, maintenance workers, snow clearing-animation…). It would be better if they detailed this more rather than making detailed people(sims) This is a city building game not the sims franchise ! Take manor lords for example, despite being indie game but the game visuals and details are so stunning and captivating. 5. The developers surely want to fix the game but they are giving vibes of not doing so. I mean they do moves that they may feel controversial; ie: releasing assets pack with 10 $ .The pace of the game fixing is a bit slow . 6. Players and game lovers want to have clear answers, and a relieving working plan so they can feel they’re being heard. when the simulation will be fixed ? When the game is optimized ? What are future plans ? How the company is planning to fix the game ? How will they compromise about this ? Is the lacking content will be added or it will be a 20$ paid dlc ? In my opinion all of this issues could’ve been avoided if they took more time before releasing the game. But what is done is done, now they have to focus on listening to their audience and take care of their concerns in a way that can make up for the bad release and make the best version of CS2 that everyone was looking for even the developers.

It’s what Sims 4 did to Sims 3. A prettier sandbox with more art tools but meaningless in-game decisions, no challenge; a simulation not a game.

I agree on the graphics. CS2 doesn't have a style, leaning into realism. The problem with realism is it's supposed to look good and the bar goes up constantly. If it leaned into more of a stylistic approach (stuff like two point hospital or something) it doesn't need to reflect the most advanced graphics in the world

You summed this up beautifully. Do you have any objections if this comment is read and discussion in the next CS: Comment Section Podcast Video. And I read your 6 reasons and I struggled to rank them in severity - they are all as bad as each other. I'm no accountant, but I don't think 130k players are enough. Let's say CO makes 2 DLCs each year, each for 15 Euro. If everyone bought all DLCs, that's only 4 million income a year. That's not enough to pay a team of 50 people, as Paradox keeps some of that, they have to pay taxes, etc... They literally need to release on consoles Also, you can see it in the chart at 4:30, CS1 had a big push right when Covid happened. I recently made a video discussing the importance of mods on my channel, and I came to the conclusion kind of that there needs to be more base game content for the base game price. but this comes after the importance of fixing major issues, and then after all that, there needs to be some kind of serious gift for people. A free DLC for everyone maybe, a big free asset pack or even a major DLC. I really think people are annoyed with the beach asset DLC, and the official mod and patch update was nowhere near enough to pull people back. Mostly because of the fact you can't make a beach in vanilla, not really the quality of the models, but that really simple order of things not being in place just screams 'unorganised' or 'out of touch with the community'.

DLC/Mods/Patch was the big drawcard to win people back, only the asset editor and loads of assets is the next big drawcard, will see how the audience goes with this... hopefully enough. Additionally, though, the lack of assets, and missing launch content, the editor is clearly unfinished, does give the impression that in reality, this is an "early access" game right now, and I am ok with that, especially if they admitted it. I think all in good time this will again be a great game. For me, being addicted :-) , I will plod along while it all comes together. The answer is simple. If you use an intuitive play style your city goes broke. The devs thought it would be great to make you play the game in a certain way in a certain order, but it turned 90% of the players off the game. The devs killed their own game.
@jordanking7711
@jordanking7711 Ай бұрын
The problems with the game is NOT on CO at all. Yes they are the developers but they don't have the final say. The problem solely rests on Paradox. Because IF they had allowed CO to actually finish the game the way they wanted (yes even though CS2 was going to be delayed), these problems wouldn't even exist. You could even tell that from a past WooW where Mariina basically called Paradox out by saying 'we never wanted to be in this position'. She may not have directly mentioned Paradox, but anyone can read between the lines and figure that one out. That being said, I don't think that we should be going out of our minds every single time and reporting doom and gloom on CS2. I am still optimistic that the game WILL be just as successful as CS1. There are many reasons why people aren't turning to CS2 at the present that don't have anything necessarily to do with performance and bugs,, and people just wouldn't have time to sit at a computer and play CS2 with their busy lives. Does that make CS2 a failure? Of course not. As for CO and Paradox not releasing meaningful content DLC yet, what sense does it make releasing that content when they still have the performance bugs and optimizations to deal with, caused by Paradox and again, not giving CO the time to fix the game in the first place? We can all sit there and demand 'we want DLC and we want it now', but if the situation was reversed and the game was still a mess performance and graphically wise, I bet people would be complaining that that DLC should have been delayed too.
@cityplannermismanages
@cityplannermismanages Ай бұрын
Hi Jordan, I think the issue with the DLC is that Mariina in Nov WoTW said "we will not release any paid DLC until the game is fixed" and they did. This pissed off so many players, but you are right, it would be PDX forcing CO into a corner. The issues are not so much with the game (yes, there's issues), it seems to be that we can all openly see the FIGHTING between CO and PDX - time for CO to cut ties somehow with PDX if they can. PDX did release the lamplighter gaming company from their contract last year, so I wonder if CO can get away from PDX and shop around for someone better.
@ben3683914
@ben3683914 Ай бұрын
@@cityplannermismanages I would put money on it that the decision to release the DLC wasn't Mariina's either, but also Paradox. I think you're forgetting the backlash from people who preordered and wanted their DLC. Their hands were tied. I remember when that announcement came out and thought it was a great thing to say they aren't releasing DLC until they fix the issues, and honestly I'd say they still have held up to that commitment as I also knew they had limited time to release the content people paid for. The "DLC" was already purchased and there very likely would have been a lawsuit had they not released the content that those people bought. I don't think CO is in the wrong here. I highly doubt Paradox would release CO from their contract. That's just wishful thinking.

I've put Skylines II on the shelf and don't really plan on returning to it for a few more months while I wait for CO to work on the game a bit more. I'm hoping when I return to it sometime in the autumn or even the winter, things will be alot better and at the very least the performance issues would have been sorted out and the major bugs are fixed so the features work as intended and it isn't stupidly easy to become a billionaire within a few milestones. Its a huge shame because I really want to enjoy it (I pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition) but its hard to enjoy the game when you're limited to fifteen or so minute bursts because you're worried about your computer overheating whilst playing the game on a bland and lifeless map with half of the features not working properly or missing and very little to do to make your build stand out in any unique fashion beyond the odd tree planting and terrain manipulating. I'm happy to read and hear that the mods are flowing in now so you and I are guaranteed to see some new options to play with and some new beautifully-crafted maps made by fans and the return of Skylines fixes like traffic fixing options and Anarchy (why wasn't these implemented in Skylines II by default despite it being almost mandatory in Skylines to make the game enjoyable?) but I still think its right to sit back and let CO work a bit more on fixing what they brought out before I have another meaningful attempt. I haven't given up on the game. I still think its still got potential and can do really well in the long term as the updates start to trickle in and the mods help to super-charge it and promote the game like they did with the original Skylines. But right now it clearly needs more time in the oven and I think leaving it alone for a few months is a good call so when I do finally get round to it i'll come in with a more positive reception to it than the last few times I played the game.

That's just fact, and this is EXACTLY what would have happened. Paradox cornered CO against a wall so to speak and forced them to release CS2 in the state it was in. The exact same thing happened with Cyberpunk 2077. And I bet you any money you like, CO called out Paradox in a recent conference call for it. The same as what CDPR did with their publishers with Cyberpunk.

While *code* mods and the map editor are released, so far we don't have asset editors, so we don't have enough assets for many builds. The release of mods is a partial release, and some of the most important features are still missing. Sadly, the generic and relatively simple assets, and how we only have a very few models in the asset pack suggests that even for seasoned creators it might be hard to produce good assets for the game...

@@cityplannermismanages There are quite a few problems with Cities Skylines 2 now, but the biggest one is simple. People often want to build cities inspired by real world locations, and if they run into issues due to lack of assets that can be a disappointment. This is why I feel the support for asset mods would be very important step in the right direction. But the support for using asset mods is valuable only if there are mod creators. As the game have lost a lot of players, probably it lost a lot of modders who created mods for a lot of games. Lack of support for asset mods, and previously lack of support for mods also reduced the number of modders active, and the potential number of good mods. Releasing the modding support later is a partial fix to this issue at best. But the 2nd biggest issue is about trust, and it is much harder to fix that issue. If it would be the first huge disappointment from Colossal Order / Paradox, I would be happy to return. Developers can deserve a 2nd chance. Sadly, I remember Cities in Motion 2, so it is about a third chance, when the developers have reacted to the criticism with gaslighting. The current asset pack is much criticised and looks bad value even if we treat it as just an unimportant DLC, just like the radio ones, which were good mostly to support the developer and long-term sustainability of the game. If we see how CO has to restore trust they have lost, and it would be important to offer enough assets to keep us entertained as asset mods are still delayed? The low value Beach Properties pack feels like an insult. After this if they want more trust, if they want us to consider buying future DLCs that is like asking for a 4th chance... Also, they wasted a good chance to restore some trust. Luckily for CO only a small part of playerbase was around at the time of Cities in Motion 2, and for some it is about one bad release and can be somewhat patient even after the current DLC debacle and the delays. This issue is getting worse. Their 3rd issue is something they can't fix and we don't want to see fixed. Cities: Skylines was released the competition was very weak. Right now, there are many good city builders. When we can make jokes about how we can build a better American beachfront city in Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, than in Cities Skylines 2, we are hyped about Manor Lords, we see more creators picking up OSTRIV, etc. that is a fundamentally different market. People who waited for Cities Skylines 2, was all hyped about it, was disappointed, left the game, and started to play any other good city builder might return only when they are tired with their new favorite game. Yes, some of these games are more niche games, and Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic is not only an excellent city builder but a game that can be very hard at higher difficulties, but if you would try it and enjoy it, and your build would lead to a long season on KZfaq, you wouldn't return to another game because some of the problems were fixed. People who left because of the issues with Cities Skylines 2, might have found their new favorite games, and to go back to Cities Skylines 2, they would have to spend far less time with their new favorite game. The 4th biggest problem is simple: Fixing the game would cost time and money. The low value of the current DLCs means they aren't "must have" stuff, so many people won't buy them. Without a stable income it is harder to support the game, create DLCs for a smaller market, use any marketing budget to attract modders and new players... A better value DLC would create more income and would have restored some trust. Right now, it looks impossible to use crowdsourcing for funding any DLC, expansion, game, etc. and I am not sure if many investors would want to invest in the IP.

I guess my issues are kind of: 1. Cities Skylines 2 is still fundamentally worse than CS1 in a bunch of ways. 2. Traffic is still broken, no matter how good you do at mass transit, the traffic doesn't go down. 3. In order to get the game running on a 2080TI, I need to turn the graphics down to Potato. 4. They've burned the bridge through communications, the number of times they've published things kind of saying they're done with "fixes" is astonishing, considering how broken the game still is. 5. Adding mod support this late to a game that desperately needed mods was a bad choice, they burned the bridge, drove off the modders they needed, and added mod support the better part of a year later. Basically, I think they let marketing people force the game out the door way before it was ready, then their CEO sabotaged community relations with terrible statements telling people the game wasn't right for them because it was a "simulation" (remember when video games were supposed to be fun? pepperidge farm remembers.) Just, design wise... they forgot that it's supposed to be fun... like, let me turn off the weather if I don't wanna deal with that. They destroyed player agency in favor of "sim" mechanics, but then half the sim mechanics don't work, the economy is busted AF, traffic is broken, there aren't enough assets, and the game doesn't even look very good. TBH, I think it's beyond repair and they should just give up and move on to trying something else, maybe they can do better with their next release if they learn from their mistakes with this one.

The problem with the game is that it doesent appeal to neither of the two classic city builder gamers. 1. The Optimizer: This gamer wants to build a perfectly running city with a functioning economy setting up complex manufactoring routes. Think Industry DLC. The Economy feels more than shallow, it doesent make difference if you build a harbor or a Train. Its just numbers in the background, no actual gameplay feedback. 2. The Detailer: People that want to build nice looking towns, cities villages, use props to detail every corner of their city. You cant to it. There are no props, no decals, just a few trees and bushes..Assets are WAY to few and those that exist are either way to big or just doesent fit the style you might be trying to go for.

Cities skylines never had an engaging gameplay - that's something Sim CIty is unmatched to this day. Its strength was enabling you to build the city to look exactly as you wished. Now somehow CS2 had managed to have even less engaging gameplay - because you're basically never run out of money, whatever problem your city might have, apart from traffic, is easily solvable by just plopping a building. At the same time, you can't do whatever you want, cause the simulation requires you to zone in a specific way and on top of that it lacks any detailing mechanics or assets. CS1 just has more stuff - and when gameplay isn't engaging enough having a lot of stuff to build is essential.

I was trying to Play after the new release until a few days ago when I gave up. I stopped because it is just still broken. It's one issue after another. The final problem was when I hit 75k population, my city went into this population loop where the population would go up and down by about 1500 people and stay in that range no matter what I did. No demand for any zones of any type other than commercial for literally days. If I built commercial, I would get tons of not enough workers. This led me to explore the numbers to see what was wrong. But the numbers didn't match to what was happening. I had 75k peeps, but only 25k were actually working. But I had less than 1% unemployment. And hardly any of my workplaces were more than .5 to .75% full. I had plenty of schools of all types, but as usual, hardly anyone at all was going to H.S. until I hit 75k, my city was growing normally. I had 3 cities I made before over 250k so this was yet a new problem. Oh, all my trains were all grid locked from every station to the boarders with no movement at all. Yet, this had no affect on the city. I have many mods but they don't install until I restart the game 3 or 4 times and even then, many of them don't seem to do anything. So here I am stuck not knowing if a mod is installed or not and not knowing if or if not the mod fixed or broke something. Too many times I have to work around something or accept its not working, only to encounter a new problem a bit later. Then not to mention the nerve of the releasing a total rip off of a dlc for a broken game in an attempt to get even more money from us.

Which I thought they said they at least partially fixed? As to the trains, there dosn't seem to be a reason to build any mass transit at all because the city does just fine with out any of it.

The only thing I truly believe is that the game is currently well below minimum standards (that’s saying it nicely), the player base is very upset, disappointed and/or letdown and the speed at which CO has responded had not helped things. However the worst thing CO has done is fail to communicate any true understanding of how their fans and customers are feeling and when they try, they completely bungle it. It’s been a perfect storm of bad decisions and incompetence that has resulted in a once great franchise and a once well respected set of devs, in a position to lose everything.

Yes, but I think that looking mod numbers, mixed with Steam numbers is a better way, albeit not perfect way, to get some indication of engagement. And yes, you're right, it will be more difficult to see engagement using Mod numbers down the track, as players could have the mod subscribed but havent played, but I thought it was good for a snapshot right now of who was engaged as Mods are so fresh. We will never truly get numbers from PDX or CO, bc they would be embarrassing. CO and PDX were quite happy to big-note themselves, and rightfully so, when CS1 hit 12M copies sold with big fan-fare, bc it was an amazing achievement - but they have said nothing about the numbers for CS2.

I downloaded several of the mods but its still boring for me. An asset editor will help make it a good city painter but there just isnt really anything else to do in the game right now. It will need some of the content similar to CS1 dlcs like parklife, universities, industries, or even gameday and concerts to get me interested again. You can spend time detailing a sports arena area in CS2 but then thats it. It doesnt get used and you dont need to build any infrastructure to get fans to games. Overall there isnt any reason to do anything except for detailing and try to make it look nice.

CS ONE is easier to use than CS2 in my opinion. That might change as I get more used to CS2 however. I have over 1800 hours invested in CS1, in CS2 I'm finally starting to get into it a little bit, but it also takes time to take a city off the ground. Most people probably don't want to to start over from scratch again when they have existing large cities with all the mods they could want. I'm not big on mods and in fact in CS1 the only mod I ever actually used was the buldozer mod because that was always a pain in the neck more than anything else without it when your city gets to several 100k or more. But I will continue now with SC2 for the foreseeable future. oh yeah, multi storey parking garages and parking lots should be a part of game play, and traffic signs and all that comes in a traffic mod should be a part of the regular game play. but I think more should be done too from Paradox, somebody mentioned walkway overpasses and underpasses, those would be good.. maybe bicycle lanes and bicycles just to annoy all the traffic too 🤪 electric scooters are a thing nowadays, but they're not in the game. you could even up it a notch too and have gangs, graffitti, drug addicts and rough sleepers and so on just like a normal city would have and have ways to deal with such things and/or curb them. I think too little has actually changed from the original, but maybe I'm wrong and have yet to experience more in CS2.

The game sucked at launch, so much so it gave me an excuse to build a high end rig. Fast forward and a Xmas patch, I ruled out performance. Was left with game mechanics being the problem. If they can fix that huge issue the modding community can fill some gaps (not all). CO can't even move forward to make good DLC's until they get that done. Maybe people realize it'll be a minimum of a year to get something playable, no need to discuss it, moved on and might come back if they pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Wow, your job is amazing. What country do you build railways in

@@cityplannermismanages mostly in Austria, but we got a lot of projects in Germany too, a little in Hungary and Switzerland as well. We do a lot planning of cable/track layouts, though I mostly do specification and integration of safety critical systems like interlockings and radio block controlers. It's an interesting field to work in.

They still made around 83 million dollars with the sales of 1,5 million. wich is very likely more than they spent paying 30 people to develop it. Bloody greedy developer. Paying each of the people 50k dollars a year wich would be close to common in Finland. And they work for 3 years that comes out to just roughly 4.5 million us dollars. People buying day 1 or preordering is ruining the game industry along with greedy developers and publishers.

The game is just unfinished. They did some great work on the art and assets, and the beginnings of everything else only. I imagine managing the economy should be similar to the complexity found in games like EVE-online but instead it's literally just non-interactive graphs with no depth.

That being said, as long as it runs alright on my laptop, I am still having a blast with CS2. Even WITH its faults. Graphics and looking pretty aren't that important to me.

I'm glad you're enjoying. People DO need to play it, so PDX don't give up on it, giving CO more money to fix it.

You can't have custom assets that don't cost money. I care more about custom buildings than I do about Move It, Line Tool etc.

DLC is not worth the cost - and the game still has a bunch of issues (land value issues) and while I love it - I find it hard to figure out what I am doing wrong....
