Witnessed a little black dog just like this at the dog park. She was being very rough - crashing in to other dogs and such, until a German Shepard with the same energy corrected her. She backed off. The Shepard went back to playing nice with the other dogs. But when she'd come back he'd stand between her and the other dogs. She was not welcome in the pack until she calmed down. When she played nice she was accepted. This took about 15 minutes. It was amazing.

At 2:35, after she's been super crazy with him, Prince gives a huge yawn and then starts sniffing the ground, which I learned somewhere is a stress release behavior done by the dog that wants to cool things down. And she stops! Literally sits and waits for him. She reminds me of a dog I wish I could rescue, that has been at the local shelter for most of her young life now, and you're right, she was returned once. I think she's basically a good dog but just doesn't know anything. (Anyway, both of my cats would LOATHE having a high-energy clueless dog in the house.)

What a spectacular example of using every trick at your disposal in order to save this dog from herself. My adopted dog has become a source of joy and the reason is because of Joel Beckman. When I brought my dog home he was very aggressive toward other dogs and over the course of the last 8 months (yes, it took that long to get him to where I wanted him to be) I did everything that Joel Beckman taught me through his videos. I'm sure he would have accomplished the end result faster than I did, but he's Joel Beckman and I'm not! Thanks for all you do for us Joel.

Joel, to me you are by far the best dog trainer on youtube. Simply for the reason that you really understand dogs and read them indiviually and not just based on what you read somewhere (many dog trainers nowadays just say a certain move means something as "science" says while in fact it can mean many different things based on the situation and dog and you just do it perfectly) and you don't just use one method but adjust depending on the dog you're dealing with. THAT to me is perfection because someone who says that "their" method is the one and only has lost as each dog needs a different approach just as you do. I work similar to you, also have helped worse case dogs though I stoped with dog training as I'm in Germany and the mainstream positive only (trust "the" science) people are madly insane here. I can barely walk my own dogs without getting ridiculed by some crazy leftist woman (I'm female myself btw) they yell at me for torturing my dogs simply for having them walk calm and nicely at my side while passing her with her highly reactive barking mini dog. My dogs are big and would be a danger to society if I would let them do whatever. Or beware those folks seeing me using a soft leash correction or let alone a butt flip, they freak out. I love my dogs dearly, I would never harm them and want them to have the best life possible which is why I train them properly and have them behaved and calm as this ist the only way to let them enjoy life off leash with other humans, dogs or prey animals being around. I have big dogs. A female Akita and an unneutered white German Shepherd, both super social (though the GSD just turned a year and thus can be a bit too playful when meeting other dogs), trusting and I can let them walk off leash everywhere as they have great manners. Of course, bit part is positive reinforcement but this alone does not work. And it's way more fair to the dog to use a few rightly timed corrections to help him understand than to try p+ for like ten years without proper results. The p+ people just don't get that they are in fact more mentally abusive to their dogs than balanced trainers like you and I who understand the dogs and then try to actually communicate with them. I'm thankful for you and your videos as they gave me back the trust in myself and my methods and ways with the dogs. Thanks. Keep doing what you do.

I am from Holland and i have precisely the same as you. Most dog owner do not know a thing about training your dog to be calm and to focus on you. They expect you to let your dog “play” with their dog while both dogs are on the 😊leash. They really make you feel you do not let the dog have fun and you are too strict with your dog. My dog plays with other dogs once a week, unleashed, but at the day care, not while learning to walk with me on the leash. This includes going 4x a day for poeh and pi on the leash with me. I now aleays cross the streets when seeing them coming with a dog. The only way to not have to explain why i don’t want their dog to play with mine on the leash.

Loyal dogs of Faerghus - it's so bizarre how different places expect dogs to behave. I'm in UK, but when we visited family in more remote parts of Sydney the dogs we saw were all living in the yard, unsocialised, not walked and not trained. Many seemed to think this was how a working/guard dog should be. They didn't understand why we would enjoy meeting dogs, saying hello, or have them living in the house like the "crazies" in the middle of the city do 😔

@@timpeacock9820 What is your son's disability? Malinois like some disabilities are on a spectrum, from "over-the-top high prey drive insanity" to "lazy leave me alone I just want to sleep on the couch" and everything in between. I would recommend start looking into pure breed specific rescues to shelters, this way you can see the personality of an adult dog. Adult or young dogs can still be shaped into a sport dog that has an amazing "off switch" when in the house, as long as you work its mind and train for physical exercise. Take your time looking and if you bring one home, let it bond with everyone living in the house for the first week. I paid $175 at a shelter for her because of her "history".

Something else i noticed is the owner's confidence is also a factor. You can see it when he tried to correct her with the GSD vs after when (in this dogs eyes) the one who means "business" corrects her. She even licks her lips and the gsd's lips. I dont ever leave comments but i thought I would post this since no one else(from what I've seen) is talking about it. Also, as encouragement to the people out there who have a similar dog(behavior wise), make sure you're confident in your corrections and follow through. As i like to say, animals and kids are your best indicators if you're full of bs or not based on their reactions to what you do. Good luck to all of you!

Definitely a surprise that she chose that path. Although wild, most of the time she didn't seem as utterly unhinged and mindless as a few dogs (and horses, aka big dogs) that I've seen. Thank for your insight and people training… I will implement these tools to help my small young dog “Shorkie” (1.8 yr old) interact better with much larger dogs. He has interacted with older larger dogs in his socializing that don't give him much in the way of attention, but the younger bigger dogs give off signals that make him go crazy (aggressive to I want to play) ! I like your training method so your dog is not setup to expect a treat every time you are working with them. I really like how you show the dogs character and behavior while the dog is getting disciplined to a better place and long term behavior pattern… ;) PS. i may be wrong, but i think beckman is missing that this dog, mixed as it is, is a sheep / cattle dog and its instincts are taking over......not behavior.....i keep seeing this dog try and herd the others....

Great work Prince! He was so patient and kind to her! I bet this dog would respond great to a flirtpole. It's a great exercise to blow off steam, and she looks like she needs that before every walk.

This was such a helpful video. A friendly dog that just doesnt have the manners/social skills to control herself was the exact type of dog I rescued too. Your videos made all the difference in the world in helping us train her. Common sense, and no nonsense.

I’m just here for the Doberman and the narrative from the trainer. This show is more entertaining than anything. That dog jumped in the water. Prince wanted a girlfriend in her.

My lab gets muzzle pynched by Kelpies in particular. This little black dog looks a bit like a Kelpie. It's part of its breeding.

Yea I’m surprised others haven’t realised this dog is kelpie or kelpie x… if you get training wrong with herding dogs the consequences can be very bad in terms of their mental stability. They are also prone to being very nippy unless taught otherwise. We have a 9yr old purebred papered Australian kelpie working lines , much prefer the working lines even as a companion to show lines. But they are prone to being highly strung , highly sensitive and compulsive and this kind of behaviour is even more manic and compulsive if they are poorly bred , not socialised properly and bred with oversized ears . I’ve found the bigger the ears on a dog the more sensitive they are usually

Absolutely has Kelpie in, and why there is no fear of Prince. They are bred to control large farm animals. Displays all the breed traits.

I have a rescue, a bit over 2 years old GSD-Retriever, very similar behaviour. The closer he is to a dog, the more barking, hysteric leash jumping, up until the point where he keeps randomly biting the air and there were times where he got my leg. Not becuase he is a bad dog, he's just loosing it, and can't controll himself. I can't let him meet any other dog. From afar he gets in a mood mix between nervous, excited and frustrated. I'm afraid, while trying the "butt flip" that he might get my hand, I'm not even sure he would respond if he gets in his frantic mind state :(

I'd say that making sure you have a full grip on the collar with your other hand, controlling the head, before you try the butt flip may save you from disaster there. Though it sounds like you may need to use several methods in combination, like Joel mentions here. Reinforce his attention to you with leash work so he gets in the habit of checking in with you frequently, then try desensitization and closing the distance, maybe?

I have a friendly yet overstimulated whippet that goes crazy around other dogs and on the leash, he has problems focusing on me, so I will try this method..Your videos are clear as you take your time and explain the details and progress during the sessions, it is very helpful, thank you.

These are the dogs that should have mandated rules as to having experience ownership. Because they can become dangerous when they are older and this Behavior goes unchecked.
