But why do producers love the hardware so much, and what's the best way to replicate its sound in your DAW? It is actually a tube compressor (optical but…) and everyone used it on everything. My favourite compressor really…

@@MusicRadarTech I do not own hardware but UAD does the job very well even when pushed to its limits. I actually use LA2 a lot as well..

The tube plays no role in the compression. Solely for makeup gain. Hence, it is NOT a tube compressor. It's an optical compressor that has a tube amplifier. The LA3A is the same thing, but without a tube amplifier.

Maybe the hardware will add value to the project by injecting some dimension and warmth and provide motivation when you look at it in your rack and realise that not everybody have it. With plug-in compressors it's better to forget them and investigate the arrangement, sound selection, groove and melodies until you like what you hear.
