I think it's pretty clear that she is talking to people who think they can cover their hair for 2 years and have her hair yet have found they don't are are frustrated by it. If your regimen works it works, because all of our hair is different. I always wear my hair out and people are always surprised that I didn't have to do anything special to have so much hair. A lot of things people treat like rules don't apply to us all. A lot of women that I've known for a while always keep their hair braided or weaved or wigged up and then they wonder why they don't have a lot of hair too. A huge part of it is genetics but if you are person who thought you'd be wearing a wig for 2 years and then take it off and have a lot of hair and don't, then this video is for you. If the wig worked for you, you can skip this particular advice.

It's been working for me. I still wash my hair, deep condition and oil my scalp so that when I take the protective style out I actually still have hair on my head. 😂😂 It's really been thriving doing it. Plus I don't wear it all the time and give my hair a chance to breathe between protective styling at least 6-7 months at a time.

It all depends on how the braids are done and the products you use on them. I have had braids in with a rest of a week in between where I had my hair out since July. My hair and edges are way longer and thicker due to the oils I use and the fact that I braided my own hair in a unique way. I have growing hands as I did my mom's hair. You can rarely feel me braiding as I know not to braid tight at all, but there is no slippage. It took a little practice but after being traumatized half my life from braiding shops, I learned fast.

I also believe that when you protective style your hair back-to-back until your hair grows to a certain length, your hair will break off. hair needs LOVE to grow. don't love it when it gets long. love it where it is now....!!! I had APL hair up until two months ago. alopecia areata appeared in the back of my hair. I wish I would have loved and showed off my hair when I had all of it. don't protective style your hair so much...love it! show it off! cherish what you have. My hair HATES wigs. It hates being hidden away and covered up. my hair THRIVES in braids (with extensions) and natural styles. it doesn't like being covered. there is something about loving , embracing, and showing off your natural texture that causes it to THRIVE. btw that curly fro is sooo cute on you.

Looking at some of these comments, I think the title of the video may be the issue. It seems anti-protective styling. I would change it to, "If your protective styles failing to keep hair on your head, here's why..."Of course, if they watched the entire video they would know you are not against protective styling. For the negative/snarky commenters, I think the current title attracts people who think you are saying protective styling doesn't work at all. I love your videos and your hair.

Hi Yemi, what I do may not work for someone else, but what I do is get what ever braids, crochet or individuals. once a week I oil or grease my scalp, I use a leave in conditioner added to heated water and spritz my hair every morning and I massage my scalp. My hair doesn't have build up because I wash my hair every 2-3 weeks. It works for me and I have new growth with no damage to my ends or any other parts of my hair.

Every head of hair is different. My hair loves cornrows and I put them in and let them stay in for a month under my wigs. Of course I moisturize it every day. Now what will break my hair out is me leaving it out all the time = no growth. So although I love your hair and the music in this video, to each his/her own. Peace.

I've been looking for a video like this for so long. Thank you for this! I decided about a year ago that I had to let go of getting my hair braided. My hair stayed dry and it was too much tension on my thin edges. Plus, when taking them out, it's takes alot more time and effort to get the hair back to a healthy moisturized balance. I loved wearing braids as a protective style but I had to let it go! My hair is so much healthier now without it. Love your hair!

Idk, protective styles have helped me so much during this transition with growth and retention. I'm almost 1 year post relaxer, and I would not have been able to last this long without them. I have been unsuccessful with styles as I am at full APL when my hair is fully stretched, and the straight, relaxed ends just don't braid or twist as well as my natural new growth. I'm thinking of experimenting with clip ins, maybe I'll be more successful in the styling area. Btw: Love your fro in this vid, can we get a tutorial? :D

Sister your hair is gorgeous, Growing up most of us as African American little girls never heard of the term " protective styles " and we had long pretty ponytails, I've got mixed emotions abt " protective styles " especially if your suffering from hair loss or thinning edges I just don't see how that promotes hair growth , I understand that we as sisters wear " protective styles " for different reasons, I don't wear them and my hair is thick healthy, can't wait to get a mane like yours tho, beautiful!!

But good protective styling actually gives you an easy and smooth transition. It's just depends, her first point for instance was over manipulation, with protective styling you really shouldn't be combing your hair more than once for weeks. Also you shouldn't be feeling tension, if you feel like it's too tight simply speak up or loosen your grip if you're doing it yourself. Many of us don't even research a take down. Half of these still applied to using wigs as protective styling so it's really not much better

Protective styling started breaking my hair off. I completely stopped doing any type of braids with weave because it was too heavy and stressing my edges so bad. I'm still nursing edges back to health. I can't even pull my hair back in a ponytail too tight or my edges freak out and break off. I stopped doing mini twist for this same reason. That was my favorite protective style but it really was breaking my hair out. The amount of hair loss when I took them down was unreal. I get maybe a small ball of hair every 2 weeks when I wash. But if I left mini twist in for 3 or 4 weeks I had golf ball or even tennis ball sized hair balls from loss. My hair is about mid back but around my edges are shorter and the back of my hair, where the texture is finer, has broken off by a good 3 inches from the rest of my length. I'm slowly trying to regrow that hair and I don't protective style anymore and it's working fine just leaving my hair out. And I have very thick course 4c hair except in the very back it's probably 4b. It honestly seemed the longer my hair got the worse protective styles were for me.
@mslady1521
@mslady1521 7 жыл бұрын
I agree... when I thought I was protective styling I was stressing my edges with the wigs rubbing on them, weaves being to tight and heavy and even just cornrows were too much manipulation. My sister does protective style and her hair is thriving (its very coarse) so I would just tell others to be careful,

The best protective styles for me has been to cornrow my hair straight back in about 6-7 braids and wear a wig with a wig cap. However, I would moisturize daily by spraying with diy oil mist and I would redo cornrows every 2 weeks. This really helped my hair grow fast and did not cause a lot of breakage. Remember though, whenever hair is in a long-term style it still sheds, so once the hair is taken down you will have that back up of shedded hair from over a period of time that happens daily! DON'T fret, it's normal daily shedding that has built up while in the protective style!

Love this... everyone with lengthy hair that I've seen on here follows this advice & I have 4c hair and have been seeing multitudes of growth FINALLY after properly moisturizing (I have to do the L.O.C.S method - i.e. extra moisture & extra sealing) then doing a twist out - and I don't have to do anything for a week and a half! If I want to go a few more days passed that without washing, like if its drying out, I put a lil coconut oil on my ends :) Best advice ever - love this vid

Protective styling works great for me! I get individual twist with added hair and I spray my hair every single day with a moisturizing spray and wash every 2 weeks. I have seen great growth from this and my hair has a beautiful sheen to it. I leave the twist in for 8 weeks and then let my hair rest for a month. I also found a very good braider that takes care of my hair while she is putting the twist in and doesn't make them too small around my edges. When my hair is out I manipulate it a lot because I retwist maybe twice a week due to my gym schedule. I think a regimen while in protective styles and taking care of your edges is key.

This video is spot on . I used to always do sew Ins and braids; and I have a fine 4a hair type. Let's just say that I had to do a second big chop. I guess my hair is not thick enough to withstand the tension. I had a regimen and all, but the constant manipulation was too much for my fine strands. The minute I stopped all of that and wore wigs (took them off every night), my hair flourished. It's a protective style but it doesn't add tension to my hair. I think that people should really be careful with the super tight, over manipulating styles like you stated.

I think it's all about regimen. I have my hair on a schedule for washing, deep conditioning detangle. I prefer keeping in protective style for 2-4 weeks. Lately I've been interchanging crochet styles and wearing wigs with my hair braided underneath. I change them up because I don't want to go 4 weeks with crochet and then do another set. That can really pull at your hair . So instead I'll wear a wig and give my hair a break. Prior to braiding it I detangle, moisturize while it's wet. My hair type is similar to yours. When I take my braids out my hair is still moisturized. Also I drink a lot of water.

My hair hairs hates sew-ins but love crochet braids. I don't allow anyone to braid my hair tight. I moisturize 3x a week and shampoo every 2 week or so. I was able to obtain 3 inches in 2 months. I have shoulder length with on being completely natural over 6 months/transition for 1. At the end of the day, everybody has to do what works for them. 💞 TFS.

I think there is true confusion of what actual protective styles happen to be. Too many people think that means your hair is never out. That's false a protective style is whatever style you wear that protects your hair. So if you place your hair in a bun, ponytail, etc. in the morning. Then at night moisturize, and twist it up for bed. That's 2 protective styles, you've worn for the day. There is no reason that you should have to wear them constantly. You can enjoy your hair out as well, its not supposed to be restrictive.

Like you said you got to take care of it under the the protective styling (which I also failed to do too in the beginning) now i Keep it moisturize, i do protective styling that last 2 weeks to a month(I perfer crochet) but most importantly 🔊 KEEP IT MOISTURIZE! when I do the two i get my half an inch of growth for that month AND BE GENTAL TO YOUR HAIR DONT BE ROUGH AND MEAN😉

I️ can not do a wash and go, because it tangles easily, which leads to me combing every day and twisting. I️ am starting twist out, and they last about three days and braid outs. I️ am starting wear flat twist for a week or so then taking them out. I️ wash my hair every two weeks and I️ have 4c hair and my hair is slightly passed collar bone length.

I have gone from a buzz cut mid-Dec 2017 to over 3 imches of strong growth and retention!

It helps my hair so so much... I’m gonna have disagree with you. You NEED to take care of your hair while it’s in braids, meaning you need to moisturize your hair and constantly wash it every 2-3 weeks. I use castor oil on my edges whenever I have my hair in braids and I pass the oil all over the small sections of my hair it really helps. Just please take care of your hair!

totally agree. I think using your own hair is best in a style you can take down regularly to moisturize

I love her hair and I mean nothing negative, but twist outs/braid outs/wash and go's are EXTREMELY high manipulation! And despite what was said here, protective styles are moisturized when done correctly all the time, including the ends, granted you gently seal and moisturize ends with water and then seal with a light or heavy oil based on YOUR HAIR. be gentle and you won't break anything when you gently separate shower stretched and detangled locks of hair, or section gently in the shower, once again gently stretching, or applying gentle tension, to prevent shrinkage, which is the MAIN CAUSE of breakage with 4 hair types due to the hair shrinking back into itself which creates knots. With twist and braif outs you touch (or "fluff" your hair too frequently to get the look you want, and many people use abrasive gells with wash n go's, leaving your hair dry and brittle, sick with breakage. When you leave your hair shrunken, you aren't making sure your hair is properly moisturized, the individual strands will block one another from getting moisture, causing many hairs to fall out. When you "fluff" your hair strands, they weaken. When you go two days with your fragile strands out in the elements with toxins, radiation, sun, and winter dry weighing and destroying your strands, you will ALWAYS experience excessive breakage.Without moisturizing, stretching, and protecting you are killing your hair! You have to PROTECT your hair. Ladies, I know you want to wear your hair out, but you have to protect your hair if you want your hair to continue to grow and retaining optimal health as well as length retention. Protective styles, when done CORRECTLY, are soooooo much safer than wearing your hair out will realistically ever be. You lose your delicate 4c strands to excess breakage as they rub against each other under your bonnet and break off, more so than in the most unkempt protective. Come on now, we all know we've been guilty of tossing and turning our bonnets off as we tumble around the bed in our sleep, and when that happens and your hair is not protected and put away, your ends WILL break. For all of you that don't know, if you lose your ends the hair that's left becomes more fragile and can break at the root eventually due to being weakened. The broken hair then tangles into other hairs creating more knots, creating more breakage. Ladies, please, please do your research thoroughly before believing a single KZfaq video, any advertisment anywhere. Watch your hair, you'll see. Then you'll discover the truth about what YOUR hair needs and then it'll be better from there. And as for this video, ladies take wearing your hair out cautiously, and sparingly, ALWAYS making sure you mosturize double what you usually do just because that hair gets damaged so easily... And as for my comment, don't just read me and believe me, RESEARCH. You watch KZfaq or you wouldn't be reading this, go look up the stuff I'm talking about. Be consistent always, even when it gets hard, and be gentle with your hair. Not kidding ladies, it's serious. It is the only head of hair you have and it is quite literally (by default) one of your greatest extensions. PLEASE do your research, not for me, in the end, my hair retains most of what it grows so I am good. You have to think about your hair as you research. Learn about it then find a gentle routine that works for you.

Why do you grow your hair if you’re not going to wear it out. I thought the whole point of going natural was to show your natural hair and show the beauty of what you have on your head not keep covering it up and no one seeing nothing except wigs and weaves. You can wear protective styling but not for a month or two months at a time. Your hair needs to breathe you need to take care of your hair that’s why people edges and foreheads are getting bigger and bigger because they aren’t taking care of their hair. they’re putting their hair in tight braids and there goes their edges and they wonder why. It’s called being lazy. Be proud of your natural hair.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I am enjoying my hair at each phase since my Big Chop almost a year ago! I had a bad allergic rxn to synthetic hair trying to "protective style" with crochet hair 😭😭 as a natural. Hence the same shizzle as relaxed but I didn't know...took it out in 4 days. I love low manipulation styles and they work for me. Happy hair care to all ❤️

Hi, Temi! Just discovered your channel and I LOVE it!! I was wondering how you keep your hair moisturised during the week if you don't retwist your twist-outs. After my wash day, I usually do a twist-out then moisturise and retwist with water and shea butter every night for moisture.

Yeah my hair doesn't do well with protective style. My hair was dry and crispy although I was washing, conditioning, moisturizing etc. I had so much breakage and shedding for days. Hair stayed the same length for years. It's retaining length now since I stopped protective styling with extensions and style with my own hair. You're hair and you are so pretty!

To each their own but I totally disagree. Protective styling is a awsome way to get your hair where you want length and health wise . Where it becomes hurtful to your hair is when you have a unskilled stylist pulling your hair to tightly, using improper tools and when you don't still care for your own hair and scalp

not everyone has 4c hair. my daughter has what I call kunta hair. it is alway tangled, super thick, and soaks up water like a sponge. the root has a curl but the rest is just wild. she is a competitive gymnast and has foam and chalk in her hair to add. I've tried the non protective styles but that just doesn't work for her. i was also spending a butt load of money on a licensed beautician and her hair wasn't growing still

My protective styling is not small braids, or crochet braids. they are big french braids aka halo, four big french braids going back, updos..in all of these hairstyles my ends are tucked in. This causes less stress on my hair and scalp bc its less pulling and tension.my hair length is between my shoulders and apl. My goal is bsl, then waist length.

I feel like to each it’s own when it comes to doing hair protective styles do work wonders and I love them it’s all about the person and how they choose to take care of their hair if they don’t take care of it then of course it will break off and fall out because it’s not being taken care of properly people need to stop thinking that once their is in a style weaves or wigs or a natural hairstyle regardless of what ever style it is in it’s need to be taken care of it’s that simple and if you don’t take care of your hair then it won’t grow it’s just that simple 😌

I think it's important to find out what works for your hair and while protectives styles such as braids, twist or weaves may work for some people everyone may not have the same results while wearing these protective styles. I know for my hair I have always had problems with extension braids, extension twists and weaves no matter how well me or my stylist attempted to try and maintain my hair underneath these particular styles the end result has always been the same for me dryness, shedding and breakage. What I have found to be the most successful for my hair is braid outs, twist outs, and wigs and usually I have my hair either in braids or twist while under my wigs and apply oil to my hair daily and I can say that this has been the only method that I have had continued success with .

Your hair is gorgeous. My sister gets a sew in and leaves it in for ab 4 to 5 months 😲. I can't do it but it helped her hair grow to be down her back in 2 years. The disadvantage is her hair is thinning out at her crown and edges. She's so lazy when it comes to her hair. I'm trying to get my hair to her length but ain't rushing it either. I hardly wear sew ins and things like I use to cause I don't want to suffer later and I usually start missing my own hair. Do you oil your scalp when you have it out for that whole week?

I frequently protective style my hair but on a week to week bases it's simple styles using only my hair (typically some sort of twists into a puff(s) or a bun) I just make sure I loc and baggy method on alternating days. If I do protective styles with extensions I wait at least two weeks in between those (but I typically go longer) and even then I still moisturize my hair. I typically opt for wigs so I can easily slide it off and get to my hair

I'll do my natural hair braided up to a bun, feed in braids or a half wig as protective styles. In those styles I'm still spraying my hair with conditioning braid spray and or leave in conditioner mixed with a tad of water. One thing that is important is to switch out and let your hair rest. I never get braid styles back to back.. For myself, that's too much stress on every part of my hair. I keep my body very hydrated as well. You can put away your ends BUT there still getting dry but not getting moisture. This is what works for me tho..
