One important correction: we do NOT have 3nm chips. They are multilayered with much bigger gaps and they are estimating how close would they be on a single layer.

I just want to point re your comment at the end that "we are pretty close to figuring it all out" strikes me as similar to this quote, supposedly from a patent administrator of the late 1890s: ""Everything that can be invented has been invented." every piece of new tech available to us has been here before. our controllers just leak it extremely slow for control reasons. this is why ancients did things with rock, to let future generations know they were there. plastics, metals, woods all disappear for many reasons. for instance, the "zapruder" film that got jfk's killing was our first example of a.i. generation. look how long it took for us plebs to use photoshop. another example is the planes inserted in the very controlled "home movies" that select people shot on 9/11. the entire episode (lol) was fudged ie photoshopped. so in a sense, the person you quoted i believe is correct

Indeed, however, this video is a little oversimplified. There are still a lot of problems and difficulties with quantum computing and it will be a long time until they make the significant breakthroughs often discussed. The future is hard to predict, though.

Nice video, as someone learning computational theory there is something I would like to point out. 1. There is good reason to assume that brains can at least partially use quantum computation, or maybe even something more powerful then our current models thanks to quantum nanotubes, which means room tempreture and pressure q. comoutation is possible probably. 2. Our current mathematical understanding of quantum computation provenly is only powerful as our best classical computational models. This means that the things we can not compute on a classical computer can not be computed on our current quantum models. The only advantage it has is that there are a class of problems which can be done faster.

Good comment. I don’t see that the theory of computation gives a reason to think brain uses quantum computation. It seems obvious in some way that it must, but what are the odds for evolution v just another ghost.

Regarding point 1. The theory you may be referencing is Orch-OR by Penrose and Hameroff, which is an interesting theory, not least because its predictions are testable by measurement and experiment.

@@periurban Yes! I am referring to that one. It was also recently proven that such structures do exist in cells and there are measurable quantum effects. Of course this is not an actual proof of it being part of the computation process, but I would be surprised if it was not involved.

Grew up in the '70s, started programming in the '80s... I felt a little future shock with flip-'phones in the late '90s, and iPhones c2008-2010 blindsided me. Somehow the quantum computing and "AI" (not) of the past 5-10 years feel like less of a rollercoaster, after getting used to this real-time third (or maybe fourth?) derivative rate of advancement feels less surreal -- though still terrifyingly precipitous.

superposition is not simply just a state being 00, 01, 10, 11. One qubit (with superposition) can be in an infinite number of states, where a state has a certain probability of being in 0 or 1. For example it is possible to make a state being in 0 state have a probability of 25% and being in the 1 state have a probability of 75%. This means states can be measured and be projected onto 0 and 1. Two qubits after measured only have 2 bits of information, but in superposition, it is infinite number of states

@@gusar2000 huh? they really don't because we arbitrarily set a voltage difference where we directly map states below the threshold to be 0 and 1 if above. Theses states are not in superposition of 0 or 1, that is to say it is not both zero and one at the same time. At all times in the circuit it is well defined what the state is, 0 or 1 with no ambiguity, so there really aren't an infinite number of states.

Left off the crucial detail on Schodingers Cathy thought experiment. It actually was given as an example of a macro manifestation of how peculiar quatum mechanics was. The cat is not simply both dead and alive because it's in a box with poison. Thete was a qyatum event for which we do not know the outcome until we observe. The quatum event was the decay of an atom detected by a device which sealed up would break the bottle of poison. So if you say you don't know the quatum state if the atom then it can be scared up to the macro state of the cat....which too is either dead orcalice simultaneously.

Run the chips in a unpressurized space module in Earth orbit like the ISS. That would eliminate the cooling issue.

@@Anomic-mo9ji I googled Sardine and I didn’t see any definition limiting sardines to dead fish. Just stating that they are a name for many different species of small herring like fish. I know a lot of language is specific to certain parts of the world especially with different species of fish. Fish often have several different names in the same area and different states or even countries can have totally different names that are normally used for completely different species. So Red Fish, for example, could be the name for multiple different species that are not even similar in appearance.

@@NickT7 same here, with some mustard and on saltine crackers. But if someone else is eating them I can’t stand to just smell it. I’m forced to either take a bite to make it stop stinking or leave the area. Same thing will Doritos, sour cream and cheddar chips and microwave pork rinds. They smell much worse than the actual enjoyable taste of eating them.

It's the probabilistic state that determines the q-bits superposition. These probabilities can be calibrated to any level of precision. So it's more like between one and zero. Until it's observed.

Are there code examples or examples of quantum computer control? How do quantum computers compare to analog computers? For security, what is the quantum proof algorithm and how was it tested? What happens when we combine quantum computing with AI?

The problem is classical computing is so close to already being at the limits of quantum physics and is way less lossy and error prone. By the time you scale up any quantum computer to the same power you end up with so many errors you need a whole another classical computer to do error correction. Quantum computing will never be better at general purpose tasks than classical computing. mark my words. its all just fluff peices designed to siphon up research grants and venture capital money and will never amount to much of anything useful

You could conceivably use a fault-tolerant quantum computer to train machine learning models faster, by instead optimizing the model's state using variational quantum algorithms. However, truly fault-tolerant quantum computers are years away. Ignoring the problem with fault-tolerance, the variational quantum algorithms that could be used to train such a quantum neural network encounter issues like the barren plateau problem, where updates to the state of the network vanish with the number of qubits in the network. There are many, many obstacles to overcome before these quantum computers become useful in applications.

QC solves a whole different class of problems that would be prohibitively expensive with classic computing, NOT "adding columns in Excel" class problems. If i was to bet money on the next "real step", it would not be QC but Photonic computing.

I think Schrodinger deliberately posited this experiment to show how ridiculous the realm of Quantum Physics really is and how little we really know about how it works, despite many 'egg heads' proclaiming to know better ! As the expression goes, 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' ! What are others interpretation of what Schrodinger was driving at ? Edwin Schrodinger postulated his famous experiment way back in 1935, by the way - are we really any the wiser over the intervening years ?

I agree about the cat. You can think of it any way that you want to... that cat is not existing in two "possible" states at the same time. There is a single state, and it is in that single state. Simply because you do not know which one.. does not change that.

Good video. Though a lot of it has been oversimplified, which makes sense. 1. Schrodingers cat isn't about the vial of poison. It is about poisoning the cat if something is in one quantum state vs another. The original used radioactive decay. Since quantum states exist in a superposition, it means both states are present simultanesouly, which implies the cat is both alive and dead. It was created by Schrodinger to bring quantum effects to the macro level, to illustrate how he found superposition to be absurd. 2. With Qubits, it isn't a matter of it being able to contain 2 bits. In that case, MLC NAND or other multi-level data systems have it beat using voltage levels. The trick is that a Qubit is in a sort of "fuzzy" state, where it can represent any combination of 1 or 0 each at different proportions. When Qubits interact, ALL of the states of one interact with ALL of the states of the other. So in terms of data, adding a 1 bit doubles the number of values each time. Adding 1 qubit SQUARES the number of values each time. It also has a really cool paralellism effect. Let's say you do an addition. With a binary system, an addition adds 1 known value to another known value, and produces a known value. When adding qubits, it would take every possible state of 1 qubit and adds it to every possible state of the other qubit. So if you were to do a physics simulation, it wouldn't simulate 1 case at a time. It would simulate every possible state of that physics simulation all at once. If you subscribe to the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics, this would basically mean that when you perform a calculation, it is performing that calculation in multiple "universes" simultaneously. I'm a tad skeptical of that, but it does help with visualizing what is going on. The catch (besides the crazy physics) is that the states aren't deterministic. They are probabilities. So if the answer is 1% Yes and 99% No, it isn't going to simply give you "the answer" but will give you "AN answer", and you have to run it a whole bunch and measure the probability of each answer. The more you poll it, the more precise it gets. But it's impressive because it takes every state into account, which makes it phenomenal for optimization problems. It won't be replacing consumer electronics any time soon. But it could be useful for AI, because all neurons in a neural network could be calculated simultaneously.

Superposition is not 0 and 1 at the same time. It is a position between 0 and 1. Or rather than having two states it can be in, there is a spectrum of states that a qubit can be in.

The key to success is down to a coulomb. Program you quantum computer to realise PI contains the number decimal places that a coulomb has electrons. It was already comprehended long ago that it must end. With the computers we built it was easier to say Pi is infinite as they would have not been able to compute the total causing it to crash as they where not powerful enough to create a number so vast. It made it simple for the operating system thats all.

Is it possible the compute power would be so fast and vast that processors would no longer be needed? As in nothing would use processors. Everything would shoot the task to the quantum and wait for reply? Sounds dumb for basic stuff but anything that would normally take 5 seconds gets done in 2. Its economics at that point.

nms in modern chips don't actually signify transistor size or the size of anything actually. It's more of a marketing gimmick/representation of transistor density at this point. In fact, it was never used to designate transistor size. Originally, it was used to measure the distance between transistors.

Superposition only works on the quantum level, not on macroscopic levels. Schrodinger said later that he wished he had never made that metaphor to explain the concept. Not knowing the state of macroscopic item does not mean it can be multiple states at the same time, even thought multiple states are possible. It only means you do not know which it is. Now, given any deterministic system probabilities can be developed for the various states, but that does mean they can be all, or more than one state, at a time.

Post Quantum readiness is very interesting to me. Quantum Computing has the potential to essentially render all forms of digital certificates, encryption and cryptography useless. If that happens all information will be exposed and this would be a major threat to all industries and the world. This video pretty much illustrates this concern. But it also has the ability to do all sorts of amazing things.

The orbital and interplanetary space environment is ideal for quantum computing systems which would require minimal cooling of only a few degrees below ambient temperatures. This could easily be achieved with cooling systems powered by solar and batteries on a satellite or space vehicle. Quantum computing may also eventually be useful for celestial navigation, genetic engineering, and new understandings of physics, all of which may be useful for interplanetary and interstellar human travel. Just as different phenotypes/tribes and cultures of humans have adapted to various terrestrial local environments (Tibetans to high mountains, Masai to sunny savannah, Polynesians to oceanic voyages, Nordic and Inuit peoples to the Arctic North, etc.) so may future astronauts adapt themselves to the space environment and various planetary environments using genetic engineering, unlocked by artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Good video, except nolonger true need absolute zero to achieve quantum computing as fullerene has been shown to be superconducting at room temperature with a laser involved. Would be cool if you did deep dive on alternative qubit models than those confronted with conventional understanding of achieving superconducting state.

You need smaller quantum computers that pass on their computations from one to the other from one to the other in a chain until the end so after the first the others can calculate the if the calculations in the one before are correct. If you have to take the first and have 10 after to calculate the firsts and see what the majority agrees with.
