Many bikers consider trikes an inferior form of biking. In this video, we explore some of the reasons why real bikers might not have much respect for trikes. We also dispel some of the myths about trikes and show that they can be as fun and stylish as regular bikes.
This video will cover
O People who are scared to lean
O Real bikers don’t respect trikes
O Trikes are for people with handicaps
O Healthy Trikers get no respect
O Trikers lose their freedom
O Trikes are bikes with training wheels
O Trikes are not fun

Great video - thanks for sharing. I rode an Ultra Classics for many years. At age 71, I decided to go to 3 wheels for my own safety. I love to get my knees in the breeze and I'm now 75 years old and love my 2016 Freewheeler. I don't really give a sh*t what others think about it, at least I can keep riding.

@@sandmanrides4318 I'm 24, and I want to ride but I have a balance issue. Both my inner ears are messed up, due to some head damage and an insane amount of painful ear infections I used to get as a child. and I lose my balance occasionally even when I'm walking, I sometimes get vertigo randomly, giving me moments of dizzy spells. Other than that, I am a perfectly healthy individual with no handicap issues. I've tried so hard to learn to ride on two wheels and I could never be able to do it. I still want to ride. I saw that the best option for me was to look into a trike. I have NO riding experience and I want to start. I'm sure everyone will look at me differently since I'm a young guy on a trike, but I don't care because they don't know me. I feel that riding should be about freedom and not caring what others think about you. I plan to someday get my trike and ride across America on it. I'm from Utah and I plan on riding all the way to Maine, going down to the southern states, and back to Utah. I want to get the Harley Freewheeler, I love the look of it! I like that old classic look without the fairing on motorcycles which is what brought my attention to the Freewheeler. The only thing I need to do is save up enough money or build my credit score up (which is at a good number) in order to take out a bank loan to put a down payment on my trike.

Well stated, Brother. As a 77 year old disabled combat vet, it came down to two choices for me; quit riding or trike it out. I was not/am not ready to quit riding. My Goldwing trike has taken us from Yellowstone to Key West, to Gettysburg, to every backroad in Colorado. Knees in the breeze is the purpose of the exercise. And, just for the record, I do miss leaning in the curves. Also, when I rev up the 'Wing in the tunnels, nobody notices.....but me. Ride SAFE and keep on bikin'.

Sandman,my brother,Doc here, and I would like to say thank you for this awesome content. I have been a biker since I was 10 yrs old and got my 1st Honda 90 step thru (my friends who didn't have bikes or mini-bikes all said "OH ya,it looks like a girlie bike,I said...what are you ridin'?") and up until 12 yrs ago I always rode two wheels. In July 2011 I was up and out on a Sunday morning on a call in to work, got to the corner and was in the apex of a left hand turn when a very large black vehicle (to this day I don't know if it was a mid-size S.U.V. or a big sedan like a Chrysler 300,) came up on the inside of me and smashed me mid bike, drove me 38 yds across the highway and into a ditch and kept on going. They NEVER did catch the asshole who hit me. I laid in the ditch for almost an hour before an ambulance that somebody had "anonymously " called from a payphone 3 miles away finally showed up (ambo shack was less than 3 minutes away). I spent 9 days in the hospital and 8 weeks incapacitated at home before I was up and around enough to try and go back to work. 5 weeks in,back at work,I had to admit I was unable to go every day and took early retirement ( 1/4 pension and 1 year long term disability). I was 52 yrs old and was basically screwed for the rest of my life. My 67' Harley was killed dead, insurance wrote it of and paid me "book value" ...$7,800 Canadian....and because there was no suspect, and no arrest, that was the extent of what I got. Fast forward until now,at 64,I'm considered 75% disabled due to 2 wrecked knees,a wrecked hip, a spine with 3 different areas of major damage, and croakers telling me " you need surgery, but you're too fat,you need to exercise, but don't use your knees or back"...so I lost 84 lbs just by changing what and how I ate,but have gotten to the point in my life now where the rehab time it would take for all those surgeries (which have to be done 1 at a time) is probably longer than I have left on this side of the grass...so a handful of Tylenol,a couple of joints and some anti-inflamatories and I just keep going, except I hadn't been back up on a scoot (cost preventative/prohibitive) on my income) until a buddy bought a Harley CVO in 2020. He raved about it(he's 75 now,and has a bad back) and allowed me to take it out a couple of times (class act from a real brother!) for a few hours and I knew I needed to ride again.I've been putting change away ever since, wheeled and dealed a bit, and it looks like ,for the spring of 2023 I'm going to be able to put together a ride to get me into the wind again.....anyway,I know this has been friggin' long but I have to say,Trikes may NOT be for everybody, but WHAT you ride isn't what makes you a biker,as you so eloquently put it,from moped-to full out big V-twin street beast,it's THAT you ride....riding gives you something nothing else can (except maybe flying...lol) absolute freedom and control.....so thank you for pointing all of this out, although, unfortunately,y'all ain't going to change every bodies mind, but maybe, somebody like me might just have heard you and maybe gets that urge...and realizes they can do it....stay safe my brother, keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down...enjoy the twisties and keep the sun on your shoulder and the wind in your face.....Doc from Canada sayin' "Peace Out.

I am 66 years young and have every endorsement possible on my class A CDL. I've been riding bikes since I was about 12 years old. My first bike was a Honda 50cc (full size bike) that we used to ride through the woods around home. After cancer took it's toll and I lost the strength to hold up a 2 wheeler I bought a Tri-glide in 2021. It was the HARDEST thing I ever had to learn to operate. Going from 0ver 50 years of 2 wheels to 3 I had to relearn everything! In 1 week I managed to hit a guardrail with my right fender ($900 in 1 second). You cannot lean these bikes and they don't counter steer. Now I wouldn't trade it for any 2 wheeler. These things are fun in a box! And my knees are still in the wind! So if you want to disrespect someone for riding one that's your problem. Great vid Sandman! P.S. The same "kids" who disrespect 3 wheelers will have their turn someday!

Sandman, Retired Jarhead here. Nice looking trike. Been riding over 50 yrs. Until last year it was on two wheelers, last bike was a 2017 Road King. Haven't jumped anywhere near as much as you have but the last one and my knee said "no more". 25 years later its finally bit me in my third pint of contact. I like to ride long distances and after a day on the bike my knee said this this is getting to heavy for you. Dropped it a couple of times. Riding for me is stress relief, too many grandkids thinking I need taken care of and all the normal daily BS. Mostly just wanting to get out and ride. Soothes the soul. My Grandfather was Tabbed and Scrolled, broke his heart when I joined the Corps. He spent most of his time in and retired out of the 101st, did some time with you guys in the 82nd and survived 10 yrs with the 75th. He was one tough old coot. My new ride is a 2022 CVO Tri Glide. As soon I get the ok from the knee quack, as Wilie says "on the road again". Be in you neck of the woods next year. Coming over to ride the Dragon and see some old firends at Lejeune. In December it pinched and I laid my 2004 EVO down on top of me. Ouch. Sold it a week later and bought the trike. Bought my first Harley at 15 1/2, a 1945 45. No front break, suicide clutch and rigid frame. Until I bought my 50 Pan I always had hardtails. However, I also bought a few 45 trikes at the same time. Have also had a VW Trike. One of Big Daddy Roths early kits. I have always had jerks make negative comments. Who cares? Not me. I love trikes. Always have. Best wishes and keep triking. Gary/L.A.

Carver is a leaning trike. The rear portion & power train remains stationary while the cabin and its 1-2 tandem passengers lean into the curves. The controls are not that different from a regular motorcycle. It offers safety from the elements, is its own roll cage, which also means you can enjoy the trip without having to wear a helmet. There are gas powered classic edition as well as an all electric series. There are versions for cargo as well. The cargo portion I believe remains upright while the cabin for the riders still leans into curves.

The Carver looks like a fun machine. You may disagree with me, but the Carver looks like a three-wheel car. It has doors with handles and a steering wheel. They look like they would be awesome to ride, and you may get that sense of adventure riding them. Thank you for watching.

You're right a real bikers respect all bikers. It doesn't matter if it's two or three. I have tons of respect for our military and First Responders so let the haters have their fun. This issue has always pissed me off. I had the vent because there's too much other crap going on in the world to worry about two or three wheels. Great video Sandman. I said for years I would not ride a trike. A few years ago my wife had to stop riding on my '06 1200 Sportster with me. I still ride my Sporty that I bought new. Recently my wife asked me if I would consider buying a trike so she could ride with me again. I picked up a 2023 Tri Glide Ultra and we both love it. I am 75 and I plan on riding two wheels for awhile longer, but I admit I have found our trike is a lot of fun and I am glad we have it. We don't ride to impress anyone. We ride because it is fun and gives us many happy memories. "Real bikers" respect all riders.

Great video! I just converted my 2009 RKC to a Trike. I have been following others for their slow speed training. You seem to be the only person that has any really good trike info. Thanks. I am relearning how to ride with out leaning or counter steering. While MSF lists basic Trike classes, there are non available in Illinois. I'm training myself in parking lots with figure 8s and circles. Feels weird not leaning. Any future video content on driving trikes would be great. How do you handle the feeling of centrifugal force on long turns, Turning right or left at an intersection with out coming to a stop. etc. Thanks!

I lean my upper body slightly forward and towards the turn. I also look far ahead into the apex of the turn. You'll notice that it's easier with a car in front of you because you are focused on them. I drove a Road King Classic for years. Saved for that rascal forever. One day turning right and into a curve it felt like I got stabbed in the hip. I guess being trained for the unexpected really helps cause I didn't drop him or cause an accident. After several incidents similar I made the decision to neuter him and trike him out. I'm not ready to quit. First thing I noticed is "many many times I don't get the waves I once got. Also "real" bikers think I've never riden 2 wheels. I'm 67 years old, I learned to ride in 1983. My joke is I was once the hot chick on the Road King now I'm the old lady on the trike. Do I miss 2 wheels. Yes. BUT I'm still vertical, not dead yet and I'm still riding. I'm a 69 year old female and have almost 100,000 road miles under my belt on two wheels. Because of health issues, my Road King became too heavy and difficult for me to handle safely so I either had to go to three wheels for long distance riding or stop altogether. I just bought a trike about two months ago. I really miss the lean of two wheels but I'm starting to enjoy my Freewheeler more and more as I ride it. I also have a Triumph Bonneville Bobber I can ride around town that weighs under 500 lbs. so I feel I will still have the best of both worlds now!

I have a 2008 Ultra I ride myself, I bought a 2011 Tri-Glide for me and the wife to ride. Love the TG. I had an idiot say to me, when he learned I had a trike," I don't need training wheels on my bike", needless to say I wasn't pleased. I love our TG, sure the leaning is missing, but for two up riding it makes up for it in spades. You can pull off the road anywhere you want, regardless of the surface. Take loads of luggage. Doesn't move around in strong wind or when you meet a semi truck. Not having to put your feet down, is a major advantage, especially for shorter riders. The only downside I find is on wet pavement with standing water. It will fishtail on you if you don't watch out. Have to keep speeds down which can disrupt traffic on a two lane road.

Well no when i compare it to 2 wheels, but I am still out on the road having fun and that is what matters. Going from 2 wheels to 3 is totally insane. EVERYTHING I know is wrong. Thank you for this video and for attempting to clear up the negative thoughts about trikes. I am like you, I wave at ALL motorcycles whether they be a 50cc scooter or a Boss Hog. I've been riding motorcycles since 1964 and my wife and I rode more than 300,000 miles on two wheeled motorcycles in a 20 year period. We use to aveage 15,000 miles a year. But, my wife has battled cancer eight times, maxed out on Chemo, Radiation and Cyber Knife treatments. She's had 12 surgeries in ten years and is currently on Immunotherpay treatments and will be every 28 days for the rest of her life. She cannot walk without the aid of a walker these days due to the radiation she had in 2011 which ruin the blood flow to her hips. She had a total hip replacement last June , but she also had brain surgery last August to remove more cancer. She is like a stroke victim struggling to learn to walk again. My wife can no longer climb on a two wheeler without knocking it over, but she can climb on our Tri-Glide. We put on 21,000 miles on our first Tri-Glide and over 10,000 miles on our current one. As far as driving down a divided highway, I can't tell much difference between a two wheeler and a trike. On a two lane back road with a lots of curves, there is a big difference because you have to steer a trike, but at least we're still out there enjoying motorcycling. I hope I'm not a snob, but the Slingshot to me is too car-like with a steering wheel instead of handle bars, bucket seats, and a car engine and transmission. It just seems more of a car than a motorcycle.

Sandman - I have been riding two wheeled motorcycles ever since I was a teenager. I owned three wheeled ATVs as well. Harley dressers have been my bike of choice for over 30 years now. That is not to say I don't like other brands, I do. I am a very healthy 68 Y.O. and love two wheeled bikes and the freedom and fun they provide me. Whatever the reason a person has for purchasing and riding a trike, so be it. Thanks for the video- I passed them along to my friend who once said to me-" do i look like I have long grey whiskers" lol! I love riding my Honda CTX700 to death (a 2 wheeler). I got my license only a few years ago and have loved the automatic feature (no I can't ride clutch very well)! I was born and raised in the city where I never had reason to learn. I never thought of a trike until recently when my bestie said he'd ride as my test dummy on my bike. I said no I'm not comfortable riding two (his health is not good) and maybe we should get a Trike for us so I can ride you rather than leave you behind. We found one at discount price, a 1999 Honda Goldwing 50th anniversary special- it's beautiful even if its older! It went from the dealer to the garage for repairs. Now I need suggestions from you all for riding this - please! I'm afraid of doing the clutch thing (it is a manual) and it looks so big compared to my beautiful 2 wheeler (that I will never give up)! She has all the bells and whistles of the newer trikes, but the grace of a classic! I'm very nervous and can't find many videos on how to ride this "beast", but I'm really excited! It should be ready in two days! Suggestions please - I'm used to riding my automatic motorcycle! Now I have to relearn the clutch and riding a very big 3 wheeler! Talk about scared of changes? ...after talking about my new ride - my friend is now considering buying a trike lol! Thank- you all in advance of any links or knowledge as I embark on this new journey of riding!

I have a video in my channel on how to ride a trike. Please check it out and I hope it helps. Trikes are easy to ride. The clutch and shifting will become second nature. Practice in open lots, on hills, and turning from a stop. Also, consider going to a rider safety course. You'll get the hang of it.

Thanks for this. I am having my own internal battle over this :) I've been riding street for 50 years. We used to cruise all the time. Coast to Coast, Border to Border. I have an Ultra Classic and my old EVO Wide Glide in the garage, but in the last two years, I rode the Ultra once, and the WG once. I have such hip and knee pain, can barely swing a leg up over the bikes, and then I put on a really show trying to get back off :) My week left knee really complains when I get the Ultra up off the kick stand. I love two wheels, but I think if I'm going to keep riding into retirement, It might have to be three wheels.

Reminds me back in the ‘80s when I got my first HD a’79FL . My Bros would hassle me about the bagger. At least get rid of the windshield, they’d yell. Then after a hailstorm on the prairies I left them sheltering behind their bikes and road 15 minutes down the road to a coffee shop to wait. Not much hassle after that road trip . Not many years later and they all had graduated to their own land barge. Lol

I bought myself a beamer , thinkin I would do soome touring , my knees have since told me otherwise. the riding is fine, stopping at corners and balancing 800 lbs is an issue so I am considering a trike conversion, any suggestions?

I have ridden sidecar rigs for many years. I can tell you that a lot of two wheel die hards would crap themselves going through tight corners with a sidecar. Especially when that sidecar wheel lifts and you are back to two wheels with the chair flying.

Did you remove the heel shift? I am thinking of doping the same on my Deluxe. I am at 50% because of arthritis in my knees ankles. Hard to stay standing in the city so thinking about getting a trike.

I ride with a mixed group of two and three wheelers, no one cares. From my experiences a good trike pilot can go faster in the twisties than most bikers, but none of us are peg draggers. One of these days, I'll graduate to a trike myself. Still, there are those who look down on trikers - ignore them. ,

Great video! As a kid my father owned a motorcycle/snowmobile dealership called 'Speed Unlimited' in Denver. The first bike I ever road was an Indian mini around 1971. I also have a form of cerebral palsy. As I have gotten older, the only option I have is a trike. I pity the fool that says, real bikers don't ride trikes!

I ride with a man that still wears a MC cube on his back...he was 5th Special Forces Group Vietnam, tunnel rat, Purple Heart and one hard dude...he is 74 years old, and has a Harley Trike...He rides coast to coast and border to border and rides that trike like a scalded dog...I hope I can do that when I am 74...

It’s a sign of immaturity if someone criticizes another for having a trike .. it says more about the person criticizing. It tells me that you have Low self-esteem.
