Sasakibe never attempted to fight his captain over a planned execution. I understand that Byakuya changed after that, but Sasakibe never had that level of separation from Yama for a countless number of years more than Renji has known Byakuya

RENJI would never put himself over his captain. Being married to his Captain's sister who's also a captain, I see why he feels comfortable being the more respected vice Captain. This makes the 6 division really powerful, basically having two captain ranks under one squad. Epic

Having two captain class shinigami in the same squad would be really useful for emergencies. It would also make the gotei 13 stronger as a whole if there were other soul reapers on the same level as the captains.

Fun fact: Tite Kubo was originally planning to kill Byakuya after his fight with Äs Nödt, but ultimately decided against it after fans begged him not to. I firmly believe he would’ve appointed Renji as Captain of Squad 6 if Byakuya had died.

I remembered seeing it in the manga back then, I was like: "How the hell did he live?" At the time, I didn't know the fans were the reason why Kubo changed his mind about killing him off. And I agree. Renji would have been the Captain if Kubo went through with keeping Byakuya dead. I personally wouldn't mind it.

Renji being lieutenant in Squad 6 is pretty significant. He's a commoner from Rukon and arguably the most powerful lieutenant in the squads history (canon). It's one of the Noble houses and for him to hold a prestigious title is unlikely and a testament to the mutual respect that has developed over the years between captain and lieutenant

I'm pretty sure Renji was supposed to substitute Byakuya initially. Kubo wanted Byakuya dead in the first Quincy invasion and if it wasn't for his fans (I'm one of them tho), Renji would've taken his place.

@@unbeaten-wicker5267 it is mentioned by Kaname and Sajin, that the kill to be a captain is the 11th Division's thing, they also state that they do it as they (the 11th) act like barbarians only believing in following the strong. No other division follows it even if it was a rule open for someone to use in that division, rather the other divisions ether wait for the captain to retire or die before applying for the position or getting recommended for the position. It's also brought up in one of the arc's when they explain it to Ichigo and the second they explain the kill to be a captain thing all they show, mention is the 11th division and Kenpachi, no other captain or division is mentioned.

No. Any squad can do it. It is open to everyone. It's only the 11th Squad who still do that anymore, sure, but any madman in another squad can do it legally

Because Rukia and Renji became crazy protective of Byakuya. Them getting powered up in Royal Realm is because of him. They understand his importance. They also have Ichika to consider. Both cannot be in dangerous position.

Dnt get me wrong byakuya have power because he part of the great noble families, bt ion think that’s why both had op bankai they didn’t. Have yet , renji thought he mastered bankai bt only received half its name ,rukia never mastered bankai both had a very powerful bankai reason why renji couldn’t learn it early on the more powerful a bankai the harder it is to learn . So make sense 0 squad would get them along with ichigo who also didn’t know anything about his blood line /race + never received a real asauchi only had a zanpakuto because hollow white was made similar with shinigami souls like the asauchi. & byakuya ain’t understand his shiki or bankai fully he didn’t know the whole sword & handle should disappear when using it before he would only make the blade disappear keeping the handle learning his true bankai made his shiki strong as his bankai even the letter F sternritter was confused thinking his shiki was his bankai & originally he stole it .

Point is squad 0 wouldn’t say it bt they definitely been watching ichigo the same guy who just like the SK being part of every race in the verse . So the fact they lost the head captain strongest shinigami + multiple others & didn’t know when everyone would get their bankai back .. make sense training ichigo,renji & rukia the three people with the most potential already reaching captain level or above it in ichigo case . Renji & rukia was always with ichigo every step of the way with the odds against them still came out on top that’s why squad 0 pick them ion really think byakuya really made a difference. Blood line dnt mean 💩 if u weak can’t help someone without the potential even sum people in royal families never achieve bankai why everyone who achieved it name forged into the history of soul society . point is blood line dnt matter most the captains ain’t royal blood & even royal families only gotta couple members who achieve bankai so I think squad 0 pick them because their potential.

The proficiency test is not just bankai showcase, you need to showcase your proficiency in all arts of combat the shinigami academy offers which includes Kido and Renji absolutely sucks at it lol. So that is mostly out of option for him one way or another

He wants to surpass Byakuya. I'm sure he would see becoming Captain of a different division as side-stepping Byakuya rather than catching up to and surpassing him. The only way he'd accept being Captain is if he took the title from Byakuya. I actually disagree. Lisa and Iba have shown great maturity. Renji is too reckless and, to put it bluntly, dumb to be Captain. Even his own Zanpakuto spirit, the literal embodiment of his own power that comes from his soul, didn't respect him. He needed Ichibe's help to even realize his spirit lied and that he wasn't using his real Bankai. Renji simply isn't qualified to be Captain. He has the power, but not the mentality.

If I'm not mistaken Renji was supposed to be the next Captain when Byakuya was killed by As Nodt. And then Renji was supposed to be the one to beat As Nodt in a sense to show that he'd finally surpassed Byakuya. But after Kubo received death threats on his life he changed everything. Now, don't quote me at all on that! I can't seem to find where I read that at. But its literally been like 10 years since I've seen that. But I do know for sure that Byakuya was supposed to die and more than likely Renji was going to take over as Captain.

In addition to that, Renji uses Byakuya as a motivator. Not only does he want to help and support his captain, but Renji strives to surpass Byakuya as well. As early as before he joined the gotei 13 Renji talks about catching up to and surpassing Byakuya. Its not entierly clear if after the SS arc if Renji still holds those feelings, but personally id say he does just not in the same contensious way as before.

Despite having the lieutenant rank, Renji has relatively surpassed the threshold of power that would be typically expected from a captain ranked Shinigami, and that doesn't even compare to the case of the wild card, Ichigo Kurosaki, who's threshold of power is on par, if not, above Head captain rank, despite not even holding the rank of seat officer. This is a classic case of "your title doesn't mean shit if you're not training." A lesson that alot of Shonen Anime rivals had to learn the hard way (I'm talking to you, Vegeta).

It was confirmed in CFYOW that if Shunsui had rejected the role of head captain, Byakuya would be the new head captain. I believe Renji would have still been his lieutenant in Squad 1

Renji is Average Captain material and IF Byak were to die he could take over, but like the rest of the "new" Captains [exception of Rukia], he would only be covering the overall Average strength of the Gotei and wouldn't be able to fill the powerful shoes of Byakuya.

Only three ways Renji becomes a Captains : 1. He surpasses Byakuya. Renji stated himself that he does not want to become a Captain until he surpasses Byakuya. 2. Byakuya joins Squad 0, prompting Renji to take the Captain Seat for Squad 6. This is the least likely case and it's possible Renji wouldn't even become captain because of his conviction to surpass Byakuya. 3. Byakuya dies and Renji honors him by taking the seat of Captain. This almost happened in the manga, but Kubo kept Byakuya alive thankfully.

We know that the Kuchiki clan doesn't mind adopting people into its ranks, meaning one doesn't necessarily need to be a true blood Kuchiki like Rukia or Kouga (hope i spelled the name correctly 😂), Muramasa's wielder. Renji, by matrimony is now a Kuchiki. Husbands changing surnames is not unheard of...Ishin did it. Byakuya has no sons, and from the looks of things, he ain't looking to wed anytime soon, if at all ever. Renji is really being prepared as the next Head of the Kuchiki clan and automatic Captain of the 6th...time is not an enemy to a Shinigami, so why not 😂. Unless Byakuya is training someone from the clan like his grandfather did for him, i don't see why Renji would wanna move. MF Renji must just get his Kido right for crying out loud 😅
