You really are right on the cloud service and the ability to have multiple artists to work on the same project. I just preordered the cloud pod in anticipation of this new future of editing. I can immediately explore and use it because I collaborate with my grandson who lives 2000 miles away and needs help with his KZfaq Videos that he makes but he knows that Grandpa can do things with his video that he cannot. I have the studio version of Resolve and he has the free version. Our collaboration will be taken to a new level and it will be much better once we have it set up. One thing everybody seems to forget about the cloud thing is that every collaborator involved in the project must have the same media files locally to begin with. We're talking hundreds of gigabytes for just a short project, just saying. So yeah, cloud-based real-time project co-editing is technically there, but media sharing is still is the big bottleneck to this, at least for collaborators spread in far away parts of the world.

_"Mature product"_ was the first thing to pop into my head before you actually said as much. But although that's arguably true, it occurred to me too that a software product reaches the point where it commands a large enough of an installed base, where the company risks incurring a substantial amount of blowback and even alienation if they make major changes which disrupt established workflows. I think we saw that to some degree with the changes to the Resolve 17 user interface, coming off of what was a "mostly there" NLE in version 16. Innovation and stability are opposite edges of the same sword, IMHO, and I would expect user familiarity and efficiency to temper tendencies toward any big UI changes going forward (unless it comes in the form of a more fully-customizable interface).

Great video! One question though: Will this upload the media to the cloud as well? or just the database? The bottleneck these days is the media upload/download for the two parties involved. This is what most services fail to nail- enough storage and management for several running projects. What is the deal with Blackmagic when it comes to this?

Was thinking the same. However it would be interesting to make use of the servers to basically stream the footage to the editor via the cloud. As the original files are what the stream is based off even color grading should be fine if this is done right. How exactly it would work is up to them of course, but I think this could work nowadays.

As long as the render server can access the media files somehow, yes. But you’d need NAS+VPN or something like that. Blackmagic $5/mo service can’t possibly store media files too(too expensive for them). Just the Postgres database for the project itself.

IMO the Edit page is severely underdeveloped and it's sad to see it get completely neglected in this major update. The Edit page is the main hub for the entire project and it should be a top priority, not an afterthought. I realize streamlining the basic editing isn't nearly as sexy as AI tracking or masks or color or Fusion, but it's very significant to the overall workflow, speed, and comfortably while using the program. Editing is a top priority for me, so when they finally get around to upgrading the Edit page I'll be far more excited about that than anything in this update to be honest.

@Tekkerue

@@skaarfproductions I detailed a few of them in a post in the DaVinci Resolve feature request forum called *'Seven Editing Problems and Solutions'* and I made GIF images to illustrate them. KZfaq usually deletes comments with links but if you search for the title on google my thread will come up. I'm fairly new to Resolve myself (only been using it about 3 months) and I made that thread a while ago, I can add a few more to my list now. 1. More shapes for keyframe interpolation (Vegas Pro has options for Linear, Fast, Slow, Smooth, Sharp and Hold) 2. Ability to drag a selection and get the frame count of the selected area. 3. Bring the spline editor from Fusion into the Edit page (the current spline editor in the Edit page isn't great) 4. Ability to select tracks (a lot of applications for track selection like pasting, enabling multiple settings at once, grouping, etc) 5. Drag and drop for track arrangement (instead of right-click move up/down) 6a. Track Folders for audio and video tracks 6b. Adjustment Clips setting to affect tracks only inside of its Folder Track or all tracks below it in the project (this would be huge!) And something I'd really love for the entire program (not just the Edit page) is an editor for the mouse button/wheel and modifiers just like we have for the keyboard. I don't like 90% of the current mouse behavior and would like to customize it to my liking like I have in my DAWs.

It will make the work cheaper, you'll be earning less, someone living in a country where the cost of living is low will now easily be able to bid lower and get the work. It means that more of the profits will go to producers and studios and like the VFX industry, you'll be working your ass off, and barely getting by. These tools, I think are a double edge sword and a new paradigm of filmmaking or a new structure to the business is needed. Currently as it stands there is more and more power, and money is concentrated at the top, and tools like this actually make it easier to exploit workers. It does democratize the tools and gives more people a chance to make films.

Money will always flow to those who can do more for less, unless you are REALLY good and can justify your prices. Technology gives you the tools but in the end, it's what you do with it. Ask Christopher Nolan to edit with a free video editing app and give Resolve Studio 18 to an every day editor, you know who will do a better job. It's the same with sports, and anything else. 🤷
@SereneBobcat

@@reelhawksstudio Will have to agree to disagree, yours is a very utopian vision of reality where Amazon doesn't exist and the CEO of the company isn't making 10000+ times the average worker just because he can. You are speaking as if we don't live in a world where apple pay Chinese workers 2 to 3 dollars a day to build iPhones and sell them for hundreds of dollars, where Luxury brands like Gucci and Fendi, and Car companies have move their production offshore so they can pay workers little as possible and sell for maximum profits. I have no illusion that talent exist all over the world and so companies will find that talent wherever it is cheapest, it simple math. Like I said these tools are double edged swords, by lowering the barrier to entry, you increase the flood of workers and lower the wages. Google understands that if they are in New York or SF they have to pay their workers a wage that enables them to live in those cities, pay rent, send their kids to school, eat, afford transportation etc. But if Google can outsource to say Shanghi where the cost of living is lower, well then pay is adjusted to suit that, basic ECON 101 friend. You don't pay a worker in NYC or SF 300K a year and then ship their job overseas at the same cost, if you can get that down to 50K or less the less the better. What is happening here, is going to happen across the economy, and in the meantime the business model everyone is entering is subscription, where you pay endlessly for everything and OWN nothing. You seem like a fellow who is on board for all this, seem to me, you have no qualms with having zero assets, and being a permanent renter.

We all compete with people racing to the bottom in terms of cost of services - it's a fact, I don't like it, but it is a fact. Real estate, commercials, sports videos, etc. I see it every day. 4. Employers DO demand more for less - I don't like it either but it is a fact. 5. In the end, it IS WHAT YOU DO WITH THE TOOLS. Knowing how to use a Sony A7SIII and Final Cut Pro does not turn you into Daniel Schiffer. 6. I am not a renter so please keep your condescending remarks to yourself. 7. Next time I lose a job to someone who charges less I will sue BMD, because Mike Dyson said it's their fault for releasing new features that make our job easier...

The reason I left Premiere was because of the total insecurity of the "cloud" and Adobe's requirement to go online even if only once a month. My powerhouse computers never go anywhere near the internet - sticking strictly to an intranet with absolutely no internet connection for security's sake - and plenty of in-house storage. All because no firewall is ever totally fireproof. And sadly I must say I speak from experience (including military classified data) . And I'm not the only one. No danger of ever being hacked, or ransomware, or data theft. It has its disadvantages, but far out-weighted by the advantages. I do realize however that some have nothing important and/or have no need for and do not worry about security.

I can try using the BM cloud but fear that it would be a negative experience instead of a positive one. Granted, this is my problem due to my circumstances and 99.9999% of the Resolve users would benefit from it. Final note: I always appreciate your videos.

The cloud is great for movie houses with unlimited internet data allowances and T1 bandwidth. Transferring the amount of data required for 4K video editing of a project of any size will make this facility a non starter for home users.

Never have t o send drives back and forth. Just need to send project files back and forth once everyone has the footage. This once it isn't buggy is just a more seamless way to edit collaboratively.

This is really great, I’ve always wanted something like this for working with colourists. The only thing al that confuses me is the media. How does the media work? Do we need to upload the media to the resolve cloud? Do all involved need the files locally?
@DogFiles

As far as I know, both parties have to have the media locally. That’s why the cloud doesn’t make much sense to me.

This is going to cause a lot of security concerns for companies currently using Resolve. While the concept is great (and Adobe has already been using it for years), in practice it is too risky. I definitely won't be making use of it and I still don't see the cloud as being that much of a "game changer." Studios have their pipelines and workflows already established and most don't need the cloud to facilitate what they already have in place. Sure, maybe they are not being as efficient as they could be in theory, but I don't see most of them moving their whole pipeline to the cloud if they haven't already. In short, I don't see this update as being anywhere near as impactful or valuable as you are making it out to be.

Maybe it is not important for large producers, but Resolve is used by smaller producers most of the time anyway. The area of video production is growing and growing but there isn’t a lot of money in it because it is for small businesses or private people. And then security isn’t the biggest thing.

Like I said in other post, don't care about v18. It's not important in my field cause am the only person among my peers that I know off who is into davinci and cost of data etc for cloud is simply not feasible for me. I'll stick to 17 till something "ground breaking" comes up.

Cloud version means nothing to me. I edit 100% solo, and I have a slow internet connection. Already, the toughest part of my workflow is the moment I upload to KZfaq... takes 2-3 hours per video. And lose connection entirely quite often. Cloud based files are a nightmare for people in my situation. Companies that keep pushing their cloud experiences often don't remember how many people still cannot get access to fast internet. I've been on the waitlist for Starlink for over a year. I respect that this might be fine for others, but I wish companies would remember that not every techie out there has the type of access needed for cloud-based systems.

If black magic and apple will launch the black magic design 18 or 19 and the new iPads so I could actually edit from my iPad Pro on the go and then continue editing the project from my Mac at home this could be game changing for reals cuz we do make a lot of work on the go we pick basically living on the go and I would gladly pay a black magic for this service if I could start a project on my Mac at home and then continue it's on my iPad and then do it whatever I want to do it as long as I still have Wi-Fi connection

It sounds fun and exciting to have a cloud if as mentioned by others the large media problem would be resolved. But cloud-based services are bad news to me as a freelancer. Cloud is the nickname for the constant and unlimited draining of my funds before I can find customers. I'm already paying Adobe for my cloud-based Photoshop and Lr and being pushed to buy cloud storage, I'm paying for Google cloud, and Apple cloud and Microsoft is getting more aggressive in forcing us to save files on the cloud and pay the subscription. My website WordPress, the plugins, stock, and the web builder, all of them have adopted the "subscription model" constantly taking money from you and taking it all away once you stop paying. That is not fun. I prefer to have my standalone software that works fine. Sooner or later, Davinci will move toward this model as well, pushing you to buy cloud.

Personally, I'd be happy if they'd just make putting the database onto a NAS easy (shareable, of course). I've been using Resolve for years now and I still haven't figured out how to put my database onto my NAS. This lack bit me in the butt last month because I lost my boot drive and had to restore an old system backup because a Microsoft update made my system unbootable, which cost me at least two months of work. The video files are safe, but I don't know how to restore my database. Heck, I don't even know where to look in the unbootable system backup I made before the restore. At least with Premiere, I could get back to work right away because the project files are saved with the video files. IMO, the whole database thing is WAY to hidden. I back up all of my video directories to the NAS and the NAS is backed up to the cloud. It's all automated. Unfortunately, the database backup isn't as straight forward. This lack of transparency is the only frustration I currently have with Resolve and I sincerely hope Blackmagic addresses this sooner than later. On their forums, there are a lot of other people who have the same concern. Sigh/ugh!

This looks like a really good upgrade, but what I’d like to hear from them is that they are going to get aggressive on overall stability. Resolve as software feels incredibly power and brittle simultaneously. It doesn’t crash so much these days but there’s plenty of bugs to find work around for. For instance, I just noticed that on my setup in 17, if I want to bring up the markers index on the second display from the edit index, it won’t do it, but if I switch to single screen I can access it and then go back to dual screen where it will now function normally. I also recently noticed an issue with how it caches text on the edit page in text+ clips…and the keyframe support for text in the edit timeline doesn’t exist in the way it does with say transform keyframes, so you can’t even change where a keyframe appears through the key-framing drop down from the clip, never mind curves. All that is to say that while resolve is incredibly feature complete, lots of those features feel very beta in the implementation, which as a license owner is kind of annoying.

I agree, I think there are a lot of bugs which exist which no KZfaqrs ever mentions. For instance, exporting OMF/AAF audio for a sound designer to work on is often very buggy and inconsistent. Simple things like the presence of a plain text layer interfering with the color management of clips beneath it on the timeline. Edit page functions not working properly after a while unless you switch to another page and back again, or have to quit and restart Resolve. At the same time I love it and want to recommend it to everyone, but it is hard convincing collaborators to switch to Davinci when it is clearly buggy, which I find is rarely mentioned in reviews of the software.

BlackMagic need to remember that 99% of users are working on a single machine with backup storage so saving scenes instead of a project database is essential. Reinstalling Resolve means all your work is gone - not a problem with all other NLE’s I love Resolve but its useless for anything other than throw away projects, such a shame.

You could do this ‘cloud’ thing already. Just needed to host the database on onedrive, gdrive, dropbox or any other platform. Sure you can control the access better on Davinci Cloud, but that’s not something “new” :)

Honestly, I can care less of this "working together on my project thru the clouds with people I don't even know" thingy... Happy for you guys if it makes your day, I still believe that the distance factor is a major barrier. Do you trust people you don't know personally? They can be good, but their idea of good, their vision, may not match your idea of what would work in your project. What i love about digital is to be able to develop my project in all his aspects, so that I can call it my art.

AI software (automation) is GOOD! “Cloud” is hype! The 1st problem is How much of your content is “proprietary” or has “government regulations” a number of companies - major corporations - started going to “Cloud computing” and got CEASE AND DESIST lawyer letters… the Cloud is NOT secure unless your company OWNS and RUNS the server farm… so they were forced to build their own “Internal Cloud” NOT CHEAP! 2nd PERFORMANCE sucks! I did a four month - “graveyard” stint - at a company that converted from IBM mainframe to Microsoft Azure… it needed 24x7x365 support; “lost connectivity” “out of memory” “out of disk space” UNKNOWN ERROR ie Good Luck! How much you got to pay fairly expensive IT production support people??? 3rd - especially for Content Creators - remember Parlor? Roaring success… until Facebook colluded with Apple and Amazon to SHUTDOWN aws overnight - Big Tech doesn’t like your content - Big Tech shuts you down! Sure, you can sue in court and probable WIN… in how many months against Microsoft or Amazon??? Casual collaboration… sure. Mission Critical… HIGH RISK!!!
