Why RGB Can Never Be Used for Print? | RGB vs CMYK

Why only CMYK and not RGB can be used for print? Is it ever possible for a printer to have RGB colors and print naturally? Why RGB has to be converted to CMYK before printing? All this and more in this episode.
In this episode, we'll go in depth about two color spaces: RGB and CMYK and why one is used for screen and the other for print. First off, we would understand both the color spaces through a color wheel. Then, we will understand how these two types of color profiles relate to each other.
First off, what is a color wheel? Not going into the science of wavelengths and frequencies, the color wheel is nothing but the colors of the rainbow arranged in a circle, that's it. Now, interestingly if we look at the opposites of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB), we will find Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow (CMY-K, where K is key, meaning the amount of black).
Now, to understand the difference between RGB and CMYK let us understand how white is represented on screen and paper. For the color white, on screen, the values of RGB are 255, 255, 255, which is the maximum. Which means that your screen's each pixel's individual red, green, and blue lights are at it's maximum and equal brightness. But on a white paper white is represented by nothing but NO INK! Now, for white, the values of RGB are at its maximum. Besides, since Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow are exact opposites of Red, Green, and Blue, the corresponding values of CMYK would be 0,0,0,0. You might wonder, why is K zero. It is because, for white, there is no amount of black. And since all the values are zero, do you think any ink would come out of the printer?

For more explanation, RGB uses Additive color mixing while CMYK uses Subtractive color mixing. RGB produces color by adding light using the tiny led bulbs in your screen. So if the starting canvas(screen) is black (or of zero value), you need to add light in certain ammounts to produce color. CMYK on the other hand subtracts light using pigments than can absorb all other wavelengths of light except certain colors. So if you start with a canvas(paper, etc.) that is white(or of full value) you need to mix pigments in certain proportions to absorb all unnecessary light and reflect only certain colors. If you look it up, additive color wheel is different from subtractive color wheel. So that's why you can't use RGB in a printer. RGB adds values to R G and B to produce colors. But if you use it as printer ink, adding more R G and B would just add more pigments to the paper, which would result to more light being absorbed, which would result in a darker color, not lighter as compared to a screen.

A graphic designer explained the difference to me as RGB being color represented directly from a light source, and CMYK being color from light reflected off of a physical surface. This being the reason that RGB would be used on screen, and CMYK would be used for printing onto paper.

@Fanta Orange That is because most modern printers when they receive an RGB design they convert it to CMYK before printing, it's not a good practice but the results are close to the expected (the difference is not usually noticeable). So for an accurate result, it is recommended that you create the design with the CMYK from the beginning.

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way bc I’ve been having trouble finding a place to really recreate my logo bc the mint green is too far on the Neón scale and thus everything I get a print it lacks soo much vibrancy that it’s an entire different color and vibe :(

Nice explanation. I believe RGB makes white because screen reflect all three colors at the same time on a single pixel. And in reality white color is formed when material doesn't absorb any color from light and all colors are reflected. So we see white. So I think RGB colors are close to reality. As I have observe, CMYK are subtractive color because light is external resource that is not presented in colors. In reality, Colors are separate entity because in physical world colors are physical material sperate from light, while monitor screen colors are depended on light and light is constantly emitted from screen creating colors. So colors on monitors are not colors, it is only beams of light thats why they are additive because when all colors are reflected into your eyes it forms white.

In other word RGB mixing color to reflect light(if you mix red and green you are able to see wavelength for both red and green) In CMYK you mix color to absorb light (when you mix cyan and yellow you are able to see wavelengths incommon for cyan and yellow which is wavelength of green because they are both made of green). RGB is disjunction of wavelength and CMYK is konjunction.

The colors of a monitor are beams of light at specific wavelengths, while the color from a print will be a white beam hitting a particle of ink that absorbs certain wavelengths, and reflects the wavelength of its "color". If you were to mix RGB, the red would be absorbing GB, the green would absorb RB, and the blue would absorb RG. Since all colors are being absorbed, it's treated as if a pixel was entirely off, hence it'll be black.

Digital press are able to print in RGB color mode but depends on the press. The more expensive digital press has color additives that includes your standard CMYK color. We print bright fluorescent green all the time and we always leave our artwork in RGB mode if the customers gives RGB format we never format it to CMYK and the press will add the additive color with the CMYK color to keep the print vibrant.

@@bluebeeprinting I can grab any RGB picture and print it on my cheap 30 dollar canon printer any day without converting it to CMYK, but that doesn't mean that I have made a print with RGB colors. If you want to make a picture with colors you mix on a white piece of paper it can be done with CMYK. Try it yourself with basic paint on white paper. But I dare anyone to take only 3 colors (red, green and blue) and create a yellow with only that. Go on try.

Lol a real designer will never print on RGB mode! Why? Because as a professional designer you need to use Pantone books so you can color match the colors of big corporations or franchises that have their PMS colors! So if you use RGB then I can only think about them that they use a train or bus to go to work 🤷🏻

Thanxx Unmesh .. !¡! I was thinking... Like... The printing-paper is already white... So if we choose white color for printing... Then in RGB mode : printer will mix R,G &B and then form white color... SO it will be waste of ink because we have got white color already on paper.... BUT in CMYK mode : printer will not use any ink to make white color. It will left it transparent... So automatically White color will be there. So by selecting CMYK for printing. We can save ink... And i think in RGB mode, the color of paper doesn't matter..... But in CMYK Mode, the printing-paper must be absolutely white... !¡! 🙂
@vimnadid
@vimnadid 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, after watching videos and doing some experiments with my printer I reached on that if we have printer that have cmyk as ink panel.... Then printing paper must be absolutely white. And if we have RGB as a ink panel in the printer then paper must be absolutely black to get exact print through printer... !¡!

Hi there, I work in traditional print so maybe I can help you. If you are wanting to print a photographic image through a high quality lab I would suggest you check with them first as they might actually print in RGB. When you convert a file from RGB to CMYK in a program like photoshop, it uses a default profile within in the program to convert the colours. Sometimes this profile isn't the most accurate, depending on how saturated the colours looked in RGB. TBH profiles can get pretty complicated. If you don't like the way your images turn out when being converted to CMYK from photoshop you can use Edit - Convert to Profile to find a profile that does a better job of converting to CMYK. Sometimes I find using Euroscale Coated V2 works quite well. The default profile is US Web Coated (SWOP) which most of the time will do a good job but it doesn't always work out. Good luck!

No you don't, not necessarily, there are many variables to printing so always ask your printer for the best advise. Most decent printers will accept RGB files and can calibrate and/or convert the files to CMYK to best match the machines profile. Don't however assume they do though, always ask what's best for them. To add even more confusion, there are machines that print using white light (RGB), such as the Durst Lamda (photographic process) and print gorgeous reproductions of photographs. if you're using Indesign to create PDF's then the X1a1 profile is able to convert the image to CMYK at the export stage (so keep PSD's & Tiff's in RGB for InDesign), and typically does a better job than converting it in Photoshop. But honestly the best advice I can give is to talk to your printer.

Red, Green and Blue are the colors of the light. They are made of light. The more you mix them... the lighter they get. The white is the color of light with RGB at their maximum chroma mixed. Cyan-Magenta-Yellow and Black are solid colors. Colors made by Man. They need light to be perceived (you can't see color in the dark). They absorb parts of the colors of light and reflect the color we see. The more you mix them... The darker they get. Opposite systems with opposite results. That's why is so difficult to represent accurately on paper, canvas, etc, the colors we see on our monitor :)

That’s why professionals have specialized monitors with precise calibration and a matte display. To get the most color accuracy. In my experience, working with normal monitors leads to a lot of trial and error with the printer. Colors never print the same as they look on screen and you just have to make a mental note of that.

@@Solidsnaik icc color profiles are made for many combinations of printers and papers, and these are used to help guide the printer to (almost) correctly translate the RGB values into the CMYK color space that is unique to this combination

I always print rgb on my Canon A3 15000 home printer with Adobe 1998 profile and they look damn good! CMYK i’d use it for logo design. Rock on! If you let your photo print on a online printshop they ask you to send in jpeg of pdf

Actually the opposite of green is red, therefore the obvious opposite of red is green. That's why they're considered complementary colors, because they're directly opposite of each other on the color wheel.

But it does not answer the question. I would love to see explanation why there isn't a screen emitting CMYK colors? But there is good answer by "David Ciprys 3 months ago" under "B Khawaja 1 year ago (edited)" comment so look it up, people.

when you look at the memory that resolution needs, for 1 pixel: RGB has 3 bytes, while CMYK has 4 bytes, so it s less efficient
