Why Does Russia Own This Piece Of Land !?
The Kaliningrad Oblast is located 370 km east from the rest of Russia, but to understand how Russia came to own this land we have to go all the way back to the middle of the last century.
Before the world war 2, this land was part of Germany’s East Prussia. At the beginning of 1945, During the Soviet Union advance on the eastern front, many Germans desperately fled to west, and at the end of the war, East Prussia was split by the Allied Powers between Poland in the south and the Soviet Union in the North. The northernmost section was ceded to Lithuanian Soviet Republic and the middle section to the Russian Soviet Republic.
Konigsberg was then renamed to Kaliningrad.
In 1991, when The Soviet Union Collapsed, Kaliningrad remained a part of Russia, being completely cut of from the rest of the country.

Trust me, Germans from East Prussia did not leave voluntarily. They were not fleeing from the war, they were forced to move. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, neither Poland nor Lithuania were interested in the region as the population was mostly Russian. Considering what's been going on in Ukraine recently and what gave Russia an excuse to invade, I'd say they made a good choice.

The Russian part of the USSR took Kaliningrad because it was seen as an important location towards the west so in case of war against NATO, the soviet nukes will be able to hit important NATO cities that are far in the west. Also Kaliningrad remained Russian after the ussr collapsed because neither Poland or Lithuania wanted more Russians within its borders.

Indeed. I do not understand why Germany do not request it back? First, USSR does not exist anymore and second, it was agreed to be taken for 50 years which has expired long time ago. Of course, frau Merkel is big fan of Putin but what about citizens of Germany? Why don't they request their lands? Besides, what about NATO, as this cause threatens to European countries?

@@larysas6832 Interesting, I didn't know about a 50 year deal. Maybe you're confused with Hong Kong. I doubt very much Stalin promised to give back the land to Germany ever and then proceded to remove all Germans. I know it has been German land for 700 years, it would be great if it was returned to them. Putin probably believes even Poland and the Baltic states are Russian because they once were part of their empire. He has really gone crazy unfortunately.

Let's talk about the atrocities of the fascists during the Second World War on the territory of the USSR. When children and people were poisoned by convoys in gas chambers, when they were burned alive, when they were hanged, including children. When experiments were carried out on children, and they died. When millions of civilians were killed by violent and brutal means and as many more died from bombing, cold and hunger. They died in concentration camps. When, in order to prevent the fascists from entering Moscow, people were dying and a mountain of corpses was lying around. In Rzhev, out of a million or so people, along with the military, about a hundred thousand survived, almost the entire city was wiped off the face of the earth. There was a mountain of corpses in the Moscow region. My city was surrounded for two months, it was bombed.

Russia has a lot of ethnic Republics with their own constitution and languages, so if Germans again become a majority or even a seeable minority in Kaliningrad region, it can be turned in the Republic of East Prussia with German becoming co-official language. So reviving Prussia is up to Germans across the World. Russia has its native 500k Germans but they spread across the country, not in Kaliningrad

They didn't flee, they were forced to leave, there is a difference. Since Kaliningrad was a part of germany before the 1st and 2nd World War. And they just claimed it, in my opinion they had no right to do it, since it belonged to germany even before the 20th century.

Немцы сами по планам хотели депортировать или убить ( больше 2) всех славян ( кроме части которую сделали бы рабами ) за Урал. I want to correct something that might of been missed and is pretty well documented. Although many germans fled the advancing russian’s its only after ww2 and into the late 1940s when the area’s population becomes majority russian, this is due to Stalin basically forcefully relocating all germans in east prussia and poland to other area’s of either germany or the soviet union. Then a quick migration of russian’s and polish into the area causes the cultural distribution of the region we now see today.
