Scald was so good for netrual water coverage. If gamefreak can maybe make another one but without the broken effects may help. But Scald was so universal that not having nerfs pokemon but hey I don't mind that cough cough Slowbro, Toaxpex.

What I believe pushes scald into being broken is how many sets it can be put on. It's the go-to stab move of water types across the tiers since it has decent damage and no downsides when compared to moves like hydro pump.

Scald is a cute idea for an attack, but In practice, it's abused to death because of it's obscene distribution and it's high burn chance. It's especially abused by Bulky/defensive Pokemon. That being said, I wouldn't mind it being given to mons where it's thematically fitting.

To add on the Gen 8 part, if you don't have one or two of the scald checks, your team is probably bad, tho not because you can't switch into scald. Also Dragonite is only a switch-in if it's the bulky set with Heal Bell. Also, fantastic video, I really enjoyed the little spins and shakes you made everything do.

To be fair- These do seem like very exaggerated examples that are also just presented in a way to make it seem even worse than it really is Scald is a pretty strong move comparatively but banning it is a little too much for something that’s VERY similar to a handful other moves that all seen as being just- pretty good

There have been so many times when I decided to fuck around in BW OU and people thought they could switch in their Ferro on my Tentacruel until boom, burned. Then they try to switch in to make my own Ferro and make me take Barbs chip until boom, no Leftovers. For a mon such as Ferro that values it's longevity and ability to repeatedly switch into pokemon several times and heal passively, especially in the modern day where Leech Seed has been mostly dropped as a move, being burned or Knocked practically murders it, let alone both

Still watching but first thought that came to mind is to reduce the userpool of those who can use Scald by large majority.

You only need to look at the latest tier shifts and viability rankings to see how much the lack of scald has impacted the singles metagame. Toxapex only barely made the cut to remain in OU, Slowking fell to UU and Slowbro even dropped as far as RU. Scald isn't the only move they lost, but is certainly a big part of why those defensive water types are a lot worse than they used to.

Gen 9 messed up in... Almost every way imaginable. But removing Scald was the best competitive decision ever made. If only Knock Off could get the nerf it needs.

Part of why I like gen 9 is because there is no dumb ass move to ruin my physical attackers when i play against bulky waters.

For an example of exactly how limiting Scald was with 12.5% burns, here's a calc. 252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Latias: 78-92 (21.4 - 25.2%) -- 99.3% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock Basic ORAS OU Specs Keldeo and defensive Latias sets. Let's say Keldeo gets a min roll and we're rounding everything down. Latias switches in on Keldeo and takes 12% from Rocks, 21% from Scald, and another 12% from a burn. That's 45% from switching in on a pokemon it should be countering. Even just Wisp+Rocks on a rock neutral target does 24%, let alone the damage from any pokemon firing off Scald that will add onto that. Do you have any idea how massive a simple 24% is when playing? And yes, a handful of pokemon will run Refresh to deal with status, but to act like that isn't a big deal is simply silly. That's an entire moveslot that could be dedicated to coverage, setup, recovery, momentum, hazard removal, hazard setting, status spamming, and even more. The fact that Refresh is used extremely often on pokemon like bulky Lati just goes to show how strong 12% burns were

Scald burns as much as focus blast misses, Somehow, I didn’t miss my focus blast once this time. But still, crippling physical attackers 30% of the time and super effective against the only physical attackers that wouldn’t get burned? Shame.

I mainly played gen 7 ou and actually scald wasnt ever an issue or op move..I just hate the randomness in Pokemon games. tbh thats why I do not recognize Pokemon as an esports title since luck is still a big factor thats why chess i.e. is a sports game...since skill is the factor. Ofc you can compare each other but actually totally frustrating when 10% freeze and you got frozen just because numbers. Doesnt mean I do not enjoy the games anymore but for competetive way to rng. Scorching Sands I think is scald done right. At first glance, it seems like it has similar problems to scald. It shares it’s infuriating 30% chance to burn, and is on a type that is super-effective against fire. However, I think scorching sands being 70 base power instead of 80 really makes a difference. 70 base power is significantly weaker compared to the next strongest special ground type move, being earth power at 90 base power. Scald being 80 and surf being 90 makes the choice to use scald easier, but if scald was 70 base I think players would still use it on defensive poks like pex, but use it much less on offensive mons. Or at the very least, it would force several move slots to be taken up for it. One argument against this is freeze-dry, which is also 70 bp, as ice types often use it instead of the similar strong 90 bp ice beam because of the extra coverage it brings. Even if it doesn’t reduce its usage, scald being 70 bp might make it more manageable. Maybe it’s because of the distribution, but scorching sands isn’t used much in gen 8. Scorching sands also has a more relevant immunity in flying types compared to the more niche water immune poks.

Yeah only Volcanion can use it now. This alongside the Recovery pp nerf and the meta game getting stronger AND the fact that stall isn’t really good in SV OU makes it so Toxapex might drop down to UU. And get immediately banned hopefully.

Scald is gonna be one of those moves that returns in a later DLC, like how the Crown Tundra gave a fuck ton of tutor moves in SWSH I don't know, I don't get the hatred for Scald, everything in this video being said - yes burn is annoying and hurts, but maybe it's the fact that in doubles these stall strats are a lot less prevalent. I'm a VGC player so as always I'll stick to the claim that there's no such thing as competitive singles (literally only a showdown/smogon thing). I don't think gamefreak will ever really acknowledge these "problems" since singles isn't seen as the actual competitive mode so a lot of the complaints from it, aren't heard. That being said, some Pokemon seriously have shit movepools (especially this gen) so I'd like to see them expanded upon rather than limited further. For this reason, I'm sure we'll get a move tutor with the dlc and Scald will be back and exclusive to that as opposed to being a tm.

This is asically the first time i disaree with ou and disagreed TWICE. Firstly tapu fini is NOT passive, I only see calm mind finis that rip your soul out of your body and taunt your mons until yur childhood is over. Secondly I don't see any issues with scald as it was a pretty solid move that could be avoided and was even nerfed by the burn nerf, it was great for role compression as you could instead of having a will o wisp mon have a scald mon and it would be very nice, also although i love stall most players don't, scald was a VERY usefull tool in the staller's toolkit and it could make battles end faster for our victims. I just think that the removal of scald did damage to the three types of teams (offense, balance and stall) as a great move that was very flexible was taken away. This together with the nerf to healing moves made so stall was nerfed even more. It is not he same case of knock off in the sense of something that was spammed too often while taking away a huge part of the game like items, but it is tge same case of knock off in the sense of it was used a lot and we really do not know what to use in its place as a really good move with a similar function.

Hydro Pump is too inaccurate, Surf is practically nonexistent anymore, and Chilling Waters is too weak (tho it’s a nice new addition). I get peoples beef with Scald, but if I wanna teach it (along with Toxic and HP and Return) to my Pokémon, I should be allowed to do so
