I think this has been said by every scuba instructor ever 😂 For anyone genuinely curious, its to prevent the mask/regulator being pulled out and the tank also breaks the water making the actual collision smoother.

But that involves turning round and stepping/swinging your legs over the edge of the boat. It's easier for you to just roll badkwards when you're wearing all that gear. You also risk hitting your tank on the edge of the boat Why make things more conplicated than they need to be

All my brain cells died after hearing this answer. The real reason is the jumping forward increases the chances of knocking your diving gear when you impact the water. This technique is called backward roll entry and usually done from smaller boats where the height of the jump is very less, for bigger boats/ships which are more stable we use Giant stride method.

A lot of training agencies stopped teaching the back roll entry in the early 90's (30 years ago). The reason being is that most people roll all the way through in the water and then hit their head on the side of the boat. Also, you don't wear your mask on your forehead like this. Main reason is if a wave hits you in the face you'll likely loose your mask. And it is a sign of distress on the surface. At least she has all of her hoses held in place with connectors/clips. I taught for 15 years, with most of that in SoCal. I've seen this type of crap and just laugh at people like this when they loose a mask or crock themselves doing back roll entries.

Just a little tip for scuba diving, I saw your BCD had only 1 strap attached to your tank. Personally I prefer the BCDs with 2 straps for extra safety. I went diving a few days ago and a tank fell through one guy’s BCD and he was seriously injured.

@@shawndavid1845 actually, it's a matter of preference. I prefer to go back first doing a roll. If you have some trouble with that movement, or little space in the boat, maybe it's better to fall backwards

I wasn't trying to "negate" what u are saying, just making an opinion from my experience, many times when i go backwards first, the strap on my mask leaves my head. But when i go head first it stays perfectly atached. I'm not "cool", I just teach diving here in the south eastern pacific.

If you dive forwards your tank clips the boat. Like trying to slide off a chair with a backpack. Plus the weight on the side of the boat can also pull you back in if you lose balance.

wrong wrong, the main explanation is, every time you fall backwards it's will be easy for you to do buoyancy, but if you fall forward you will end up spin and can't do a buoyancy for a few sec, plus it will be easir fall backwards than fall forwards

LOL, no, that's not the reason. The reason is that on a smaller boat that's moving around a lot (or one whose sides are very close to the water line), standing up and doing a giant stride is less safe than staying seated.
