Sea cucumbers are rather inconspicuous animals and are certainly not the most well-known sea creatures. They are nonetheless of enormous importance for the oceans and us humans. But don't get too excited because despite their harmless appearance they are actually not as safe to handle as one might think. In this video, you find out why.

Wow, when I was younger they brought an ocean-themed petting zoo to our grade school. It was small in a classroom but we got to pet the animals in each tank. I absolutely was able to pick up a sea cucumber turn it over, pet the soft belly part and let it wrap around my arm. They also brought a baby shark for us to pet......Thinking bout it, I'm not certain how legal this was now. This was in early 90's.

He meant that they are more closely related to humans than many other phyla of ANIMALS. Vertebrates (phylum chordata) and Echinoderms are both deuterostomes in that in the blastocyst stage of the early embryo, the infolding (invagination) of the blastocyst and the hole that it creates becomes the anus in these two phyla and the mouth forms secondarily. In almost every other phylum this becomes the mouth and the anus forms secondarily. He was NOT comparing a vegetable cucumber to us.

Some 39 years ago during my first visit to Taiwan, I was in a seafood restaurant in Taichung with a friend and his family. There was one item we had with which I was unfamiliar. My friend said he couldn't recall as to which phylum it belonged to (we are both biologists), but he would point it out if he saw one in the display window of the restaurant. It turned out there wasn't one there of what he was seeking, but I suspect it might have been a sea cucumber (although the meal only included pieces of whatever it was).

Funny story me and my brothers and sisters were swimming and we saw some sea cucumbers at the bottom and we decided to bring them in the boat, our dad said they were perfectly harmless until we saw them "peeing", our faces were swollen like tomatoes for the next couple days.
