In this brief clip, Dr. Wilson explains the benefits of saying, "Great!" in the face of doubt and distress.
About the full DVD: Stopping obsessional thinking patterns is one of the most vexing challenges people deal with, and most therapists are equally mystified about how to really help their clients free themselves from the torture of fearful thoughts. Here, notable anxiety disorder expert Reid Wilson employs a variation of cognitive-behavioral and strategic methods in two live sessions, demonstrating his unique approach to tackling obsessive thinking.
Rita, a middle-aged mother, is plagued with anxiety about her health. Obsessed with what might be wrong with her, she spends much of her time seeking reassurance that she's okay, from repeated internet searches to excessive doctors' visits. Trying to avoid anything that triggers her fear of having a heart attack, Rita is missing out on living the active lifestyle she longs to live and barely enjoys time with her family and friends.
In two sessions with Rita, Wilson demonstrates the core concepts underlying his paradoxical approach to treating anxiety disorders. With humor, compassion, and clarity, he passionately encourages Rita to rise above the content of her obsessive thoughts and practice moving towards that which she fears, supporting her in learning to tolerate uncertainty. Calling on her courage, he helps her to dramatically alter her relationship to the anxiety.

Another excellent video demonstration by Dr. Wilson encouraging therapists to approach treatment sessions by focusing on helping the patient to better tolerate the feeling of doubt and uncertainty, rather than focusing on their content, which would go nowhere. There's an infinite amount of content that patients will find, which is why its fruitless for therapists (and their patients) to go in that direction.

After years of mental torture, finding you videos has given me a release, can’t thank you enough. Could you please do more on this health anxiety topic Dr Wilson, especially regarding cardiac fears and what to do with symptoms like palpitations, fast heart beat, I feel I’m on the verge of recovery after watching and listening to your presentations. Thank you so much

I’m trying this right now with anxiety raging. I said, great I get to practice, excellent. And my body just flipped out like what the #$&* did you just say. Great, good, excellent.? I got intense anger and so it seems I am resisting and fighting these symptoms with all my power, and it’s not working. I don’t like the symptoms, I freaking hate them, this has turned my whole life upside down. There’s something to this technique. I’m going to keep it going. It’s terrifying, great !

It will take a lot of faith and trust in your counselor that it will eventually habituate.

I wonder if posting on this board is a way of seeking reassurance. Anyway I’m going to try the technique for my intense health anxiety. Nothing else has worked.

I had this when I had excess estrogen and not enough progesterone because I wasn’t ovulating. Progesterone sits on gaba receptors the same ones anti anxiety meds do.

See this is the problem, here in the UK they just don’t check hormones for mental health and I am certain than my anxiety is linked, in the most part to my hormones

I just recently started researching the correlation between high estrogen lvls and anxiety. One time i had to take artificial progesterone and had the time of my life! That is why I'll start seed cycling for hormone balance. Thank you for your comment!

👍 Another thing… God says “Give thx in all situations “ … so then “give thx for the anxiety…” … it diffuses it’s power over you.
