Why ships used this camouflage in World War I

Dazzle camouflage was fantastically weird. It was also surprisingly smart.

Dazzle camouflage was a surprisingly effective defense against torpedoes. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explains why.
World War I ships faced a unique problem. The u-boat was a new threat at the time, and its torpedoes were deadly. That led artist Norman Wilkinson to come up with dazzle camouflage (sometimes called “razzle dazzle camouflage”). The idea was to confuse u-boats about a ship’s course, rather than try to conceal its presence. In doing so, dazzle camouflage could keep torpedoes from hitting the boat - and that and other strategies proved a boon in World War I.
This camouflage is unusual, but its striking appearance influenced the culture, inspired cubist painters’ riffs, and even entered into the world of fashion. Though dazzle camouflage lost its utility once radar and other detection techniques took over from u-boat periscopes, for a brief period in time it was an effective and unusual way to help ships stay safe.

Most of the historical camos in the World of Warships are either premium camos specific to various ships. The USN and KM in particular have lots of accurate designs. The consumable camos Type 1, 2, 5 and 6 all correspond relatively closely to real patterns (not sure about Type 1 though, looks more like conventional land camouflage) too, but most of the event-related camouflage like Hallowe'en, New Years, Team Fire, Team Water, Sharks, Eagles and Pi Day are probably a step too far. @Grise Blacolar The vessel in the thumbnail is the La Gallisonière-class cruiser _Gloire_ .

In addition to radar (which was in its infancy in the beginning of WW2), more ships traveled in convoys by the end of WW1 (which made it harder to find enemy ships, riskier for U-boats to attack, and easier to salvage hit boats) and airplanes were more or less undazzled by that camouflage.
@waynesimpson2074

With the advent of the magnetic fuse, a U-boat torpedo did not have to strike a ship's hull as with a contact fuse. The most devastating shot from a torpedo is just below the keel of a ship (not striking it) which is what the magnetic (pistol) fuse facilitated; a proximity detonation. Some newer torpedoes had an acoustic tracking system tuned to the harmonics of specific enemy ships' propellers. Also I think the viewfinders on periscopes were improved with an optical ranging system which superimposed an identical double image of the target ship (thus negating any camouflage) , one slightly offset from the other to give an accurate firing solution. Sorry but my ability to explain such complicated technology is limited.
@jasonpeng5798
@jasonpeng5798 6 жыл бұрын
it was incredibly successful. it was abandoned because radar, which is unaffected by colors because it's wavelength is beyond the visible spectrum of light. something that might interest you is that modern ships are made of alloys various densities and have random parts sticking out in random patterns, mimicking "dazzle," in order to scatter radar waves more.

Although many ships didnt use camo in WW2 some ships like the German Bismark class battleship and the Admiral Hipper class heavy cruiser had a paint scheme which made its length look smaller and also made it difficult to judge which direction it was moving. Both the aft and the stern had white-ish paint which looked like water splashing on the ship when it moved foreward. You can imagine how hard it must have been during combat as the ships were very far from each other and usually relied on binoculars and telescopes to determine the ships heading and engage it

I live on the Wirral in the UK and there is the Mersey ferries that connect the Wirral and Liverpool, currently to remember the First World War they have painted one of the ferries in this type of camouflage. there is also U-534 located at the Woodside terminal, both these vessels are a really nice thing to see when traveling to collage

Great video. I was thinking maybe you could do a video on the laws of war and how they came about (like why its 'illegal' to shoot at a pilot that's ejected from their plane. I think it'd be really interesting to see how countries came to accept restricting laws in the brutalities of conflict

I have that dazzle camo on the thumbnail in my De Grasse in World of Warships. It's awesome because it gives the illusion that the ship's hull has a lot of angles.

Hi, I always loved the way you explain , looks like a simple narrative. They also used a technique called "Degaussing" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degaussing) on ships during World War II to reduce magnetic signature of ships. If you can do a video on it, it would be nice.

Normally, I watch these videos to learn something new. This time, I came to see how correct you were with this. Here is one correction (I know it's nitpicking a bit): Dazzle camouflage was not used specifically for submarines. In fact, it was used to defend against other enemy ships, such as battleships and destroyers. Cheers.
