Ohtani chose the Angels because the flight to Japan from California is shorter than other teams not in the west coast, but more importantly, the AL has a DH and he wanted to be a DH player. This probably means he was also interested in playing for the SF Giants. If the NL had a DH, it would have been a much higher possibility that he could have signed with the Dodgers.

Ohtani and his agent discussed this in his ESPN doc. NL did not have DH like AL back then and Angels showed the strongest belief in him as a two-way player.

I totally agree with your analyses. I think Toronto presents a lot of aspects that are better fitted for Shohei, it’s a place where he can make a huge difference in terms of not just winning but winning and being a real World Series contenders. They have a great pitching rotation and a decent offense that he can bolster in a big way. I think he will elevate players on that team. Vlad jr will have a huge yr if Ohtani is in the line up. Also, Toronto like you stated is a safer city and Canada is in general. I think a big reason why he doesn’t go to a Chicago or a New York team is the crime and open border, those cities are trashed and I believe he doesn’t want to live in that environment. Same goes for for LA. Yeah the teams are good but the city is messed up with all the homelessness and dirty streets. The state taxes are also outrageous. Shohei is going to the Jays and I’m calling it now.
