Years ago while flying in helicopters for the Marine Corps we had automatic flight control systems (AFCS) to assist us and make flying easier. There were many (esp new pilots) who hated flying AFCS off. It was harder and to an inexperienced pilot and was not pretty some times. However, it was just a thing they had to overcome. When things go wrong you need to know how to fly in that unassisted mode. Same with drones. Getting comfortable in Atti mode just makes you a better pilot when you stop using the stability systems as a crutch. Yeah, I use P mode a lot. However, I fly Atti some too. Just because I want to keep up the skill. Sometimes when I come home with a couple of batteries that I haven't used that day on a job I will burn them down to storage levels out flying atti mode. Usually I try flying cinematic styles in atti because I find it makes for nicer fluid movements sometimes over flying in P mode. Flying things like cinewhoops in acro mode helps build comfort in those skills too because acro in cinewhoops and racing quads is so unforgiving, but hella fun :) My 2 cents, your mileage may vary...

James Alexander very good point. And since the FAA considers drones to be official aircraft, it only makes sense to treat them as they are in order to advance the future of piloting unmanned aircraft and utilize the same protocol as learning to fly manned aircraft. Not to mention the safety factor that exist within the standard today. But, the fact that manufacturers are selling drones without Atti mode these days is much like selling guns without a safety mechanism. If I were a drone manufacturer I do believe that it would be in my best interest to implement this feature within my line up. Experience and education within drone flight still has a ways to go. It’s the newcomers who have never flown rc planes and helicopters and don’t know the true meaning of flight are the ones who will eventually set an example for this. The ones who get a new Mavic for Christmas and don’t know how to perform the Atti hack on their new drone but fly it for a day or two and say, “I got this!”, yep those are the ones. All the manned pilots that I know that fly drones only fly drones with Atti mode. This is where I get my advice from. Not from some dude on KZfaq that tells me that I don’t need Atti mode!

@@airadaimagery692 Well said. My manned aviation experience has certainly shaped how I view drone flying that is for sure. The farther down this path we go the closer I believe it will come to general aviation. Log books, ratings added to the back of our licenses and even a bi-annual flight review where you demonstrate proficiency with a real aircraft.

James Alexander I totally agree with everything you are saying. I only wish that we had more (if any) actual drone pilots sitting on the board and making decisions for the FAA. IMO, this would advance the evolution of UAS flight exponentially.

@@airadaimagery692 You and I are on the same page buddy :) The past 2 years we had a pretty dang good conference here in North Carolina. The NC Drone Summit. NCDOT Aviation division hosted it and we had speakers from FAA, NASA and other agencies. Even Homeland Security. When I say speakers im not talking about just a person from the agency. Im talking about the director for UAS integration for FAA or the head of UAS research for NASA etc. It was a really good conference and put commercial drone pilots in direct contact to the decision makers at those levels of government. There were exhibiters as well and that was nice but there were several really good discussions about the future that NASA and FAA see with unmanned aviation and what they have in their roadmap. The speakers stayed and were readily accessible by the attendees outside of the auditoriums which I really liked, and during their presentations they were opened up to some pretty pointed questions from the audience. I really enjoyed it but this year was canceled early on. Im hoping it was due to Covid but im not sure. Hopefully in 2021 we will have another one. (fingers crossed)

Well Done. I have gotten comfortable flying in P mode for the past several years. I had myself believing this is the way to go. Yes I know about the altitude mode and have switched to it when a problem developed. After listening to this I now understand your point in having full control. I will be looking into your VR Classes. Thanks for all the great information. You guys rock...

I'm mixed in this. I fly in the mode that best benefits what I'm trying to do. However I'm located in the Pacific NW and there are obstacles everywhere, wind gusts, and line of sight is a struggle and I lose signal more than I'd like. There have been instances where I lost signal and if I had been flying in Atti mode I would have either lost the drone (Inspire 2) or crashed it into a bridge, tree, or terrain. We're quite deficient or large open areas that aren't either next to airports, wildlife areas, private property, or have UAS takeoff restrictions. I have to drive out to St Helen OR to fly in a large area of the Columbia River. I agree Atti is very helpful especially in my instance where I have more gimbal movement ability and trying to constantly operate the throttle is difficult. However, the combination of terrain, trees, and wind, and hidden power lines creates some scary situations where the signal with dropout at very bad times. Most of the time I'm in Sport mode although the more recent Inspire 2 firmware updates have neutered the speed.

True. I modern drones ATTI mode is not that amazing anymore. Exactly due to a reason you can lost your drone in a high wind situation for instance when you lose the signal temporarily. RTH does not work too. RTH saved my drone few times already.

Great video I fly my drones like I stole em! I have a hacked air 2s took off the NFZ and the height restrictions. Also modded the vertical and descent speeds. Gonna hack the cinema mode to atti and fly the crap out of it. This drone is a monster it will climb at 22 mph and decend at like 16 mph. No fear here!

Paul is right that learning to fly without GPS is very useful for getting some shots and for not losing your drone when other things fail which they will eventually. Imagine if your car couldn't coast, if every time you let off the gas the car automatically jammed on the brakes. That is p mode lol. However Paul's reasoning that he goes into for the second half of the video is all wrong. saying that people shouldn't fly if they can't afford to lose it is just nuts. Depending on our ability to replace our drones we make a risk assessment and decide the kinds of things we want to do with it. Taking large risks because it's insured and we can just get another one is a quick way to have your insurance company drop you. As you gain experience and practice things the risk involved goes down and then you move on to more challenging things but to just jump in over your head, creating a high likelihood of losing your aircraft is not smart. In Paul's example on the subject tracking course on the boat I think the better answer to the student would be that if they're too uncomfortable with the techniques of the course then maybe they're just not ready for the course yet. Another thing we should all practice every time we fly is getting the Drone back to us without looking at the display. there are many many reasons that your display will be inaccurate or just gone so you need to be able to figure out which way is up down left and right without using it and get the Drone back before it crashes. Trying to do this for real the first time something goes wrong is almost a guaranteed failure. If you practice it every time you fly you will become proficient and not afraid of that situation.

I'm confused. In ATTI, how does it stop a fly-away when you've lost comm. between your controller and drone? You've lost com. how does it respond to your corrective actions? BTW, I fly an old Inspire 1 with horrible video transmission and regularly lose the image.
