Why Should I Buy a 50-70 hp Tractor?

This is a nice size tractor for a lot of applications. I have a good friend that has a large commercial gardening operation and this is the size tractor he has and uses for everything he does. It's a size that doesn't sell the big numbers of the 30 and 40 horsepower tractor segments so you won't see very many on the used market. And, if you do find one, you'll probably be shocked at the asking price because there's more demand than supply in this segment. I grew up on an apple orchard with this size tractor and it did everything we needed from pulling a 400 gallon commercial spray rig to lifting and transporting two 20 bushel bins of apples. They pack a lot of useable horsepower into a small package and still don't do too bad on fuel economy. It's a good choice if you can afford it.

I'll tell you a funny story. When my wife and I bought our little ranch the rancher neighbours told us "Don't buy less than 50 hp". No other advice than that. OK, they obviously knew what they were talking about, so within a few months we had bought a 50 hp 1955 John Deere model 70 gas tractor. and no front end loader! We had a tractor with no three point hitch (it was a prairie tractor), a terribly undersized hydraulic pump and two wheel drive. Jeez, we were stupid. It all worked out in the end. We quickly realized we had just blown $5,000 and bought a nice 1986 30 hp 4x4 diesel Kubota with loader. It is just big enough for bush hogging (4 1/2 ft) and square baling. It does almost everything we want to do and is fuel efficient and reliable. The John Deere became my restoration project and boy, does it turn heads when I take it to town!

My first tractor bought in 1974 a 51 John Deere G paid $450.00 for it,put a 3 point hitch on it paid for it $160.00 tough tractor easy to work on not fancy with bells and whistles, pulls like hell, best of all did the job I wanted, I liked the pop,pop,pop sound, still have it today

I have a Mahindra 5035 (50hp) and pull a 7' cutaway disc and a 3 bottom plow with it perfect.

Good call on the pallet weight. The industrial 48" x 40" x 5" pallets we deal with can weigh up to around 2,500 pounds. 👍

Size the tractor for what you are doing. The sub-compact can be really handy inside the horse barn even if you have 10,000 acres and need the new 900 hp tractor to pull the big plow.

Hi Mike Really like the videos, have a question (actually several) I have never owned a tractor and I purchased 30 acres in East Tx, 25 of the 30 acres is overgrown as it was logged and then left to its own demise. So I need to cut some serious brush along with some mature cedars that I need to cut down then haul out. in your opinion what size tractor would I need to use a grappler for picking up mature cedars in sections of course and using a bush hog cutting Brush w/ 4” wood? Been looking at Kubota MX5800, M6060 and M7060, would love to hear your thoughts!

David, there are so many factors that I'd want to clarify before making a recommendation, but if you're cutting 4" trees, better find the cutter that will handle that size first, then see how much tractor you need in front of it to get the right size. That's going to take a heavy cutter to get down and a lot of horsepower in front of it. Good luck!

So, one more question. We will be getting either a 10 acre or a 50 acre property soon. The 50 acre property one has 30 acres of tillable land currently coming off of a soybean planting. We are planning to turn it into grazing Prairie. Will mostly require either a brush on refinishing more. Based on the 30 acre size, what size tractor would you recommend?

No smaller than 40 hp. If you're brush hogging that much area with a 5' cutter it'll take forever. If the budget permits, get a 55-60 hp tractor and a 7' or 8' cutter and you'll get done a lot faster. I don't think I've ever dealt with someone who said "I wish I'd gotten a smaller tractor", so get the biggest one you can afford, unless you just savor tractor seat time :).

Our 55 horse mahindra pulled a Vermeer round baler with a 75 hp. Minimum it was baling wet hay and it did just fine

+Big guy I'm not surprised that's working, I hear similar stories pretty regularly. Some of the balers would definitely work on smaller tractors if the ground speed were slowed down a little. It obviously takes more power to run at 8-9 mph than it would at 4-5. Hills have a huge impact on horsepower requirements as well. Size of the windrow and yield of the hay crop are also factors. Also, if you get too big a baler on a small tractor, stopping everything coming down a hill with a full bale in the chamber could be an issue. I bet the baler manufacturers hate having to come up with a minimum hp requirement, if they put it too low they have guys trying to bale up and down hills in road gear who are unhappy, if they put it too high they reduce the number of potential customers. There are so many variables in baling hay it must be real difficult to make that determination. Thanks for your comment!

+Mike Wiles (Ask Tractor Mike) friggen right it's a beast. And I don't know why we would have issues stopping if you know what your doing then you would know how to shift and not even need to use the brakes at all. And going up a hill naturally if your running a baler with a smaller hp. Than the minimum on that baler when you go up hills it's all the poor thing wants to do but it did it. P.s. The baler we were running and still run today is a Vermeer 904 N

+Big guy If the grass is wet and it's a steep hill, the weight of a baler and a bale can push a tractor if it's too small. You can lose steering capabilities and your ground speed doesn't matter when gravity takes over because the wheels will spin. I've been in a free slide on a 40 hp tractor trying to exceed it's capabilities and I'm really glad the bottom of the hill was close when it got away from me. It's a really scary experience. That's probably not going to be a problem with a tractor the size you have. But I cringe when I see some of these folks trying to pull round balers with the next size smaller. I highly recommend against that. They might have enough engine to do it, they may not have enough tractor. Thanks for the comments!

+Mike Wiles (Ask Tractor Mike) well yes I agree with that but if you haven't noticed mahindra is a lot heavier than other brands so I don't think you would have to worry about it pushing the tractor

What's the biggest size finishing mower you could run on this tractor size? Also. From your video on should I buy a 40 hp tractor, what is the largest finishing mower you could pull off that size of tractor? Thanks, appreciate the videos. Very helpful

Even the larger bat wing finish mowers (that fold up for transport) that run up to 17' usually only take about 45-50 PTO hp to pull, so you'd probably be okay with the biggest one you can find. Different machines have different horsepower requirements, so check the hp requirement of the cutter before buying and make sure it doesn't exceed your tractor's PTO horsepower. A 40 hp tractor can pull a 7' finish mower. Now, having said all of that, hilly conditions and mowing material that's shoulder high can change those numbers, so it's hard to say exactly what horsepower is required.

How does this size tractor do with plowing, cultivators, ripping, & other deep soil work? I would think one needs 75-95 hp for this type of work. Your thought's?

Gosh, that depends on the soil and the size of the implement. That size would probably pull a 2-3 bottom plow, if you get into true deep tillage you'll need a whole lot more horsepower. I once pulled an implement called a Paratil that cut down below the fragipan, or the clay barrier a couple of feet below the surface at a product introduction. It worked a 350 hp articulated tractor pretty good.

James, that's the only option for a lot of folks with small tractors, I have zero experience with them. It seems to me like a lot of expense, time, and effort for not much hay, but I may be totally off base.

I have 80 acres and I need to brush hog trails, and a horse pasture, I also need to pull a 250 bushel manure spreader, and possibly pull a small square baler, any reccomendations on what size tractor would be good?

I'd want at least a 50 hp tractor for that size of manure spreader, bigger if on hills. Before you invest in a tractor, it would be good to see what horsepower the manure spreader requires, the important thing is having a big enough frame size and good enough brakes to be able to stop a fully loaded spreader coming down a hill. It doesn't take much horsepower to pull a square baler, they used to be pulled with 8N's, which weren't even 30 hp, but with smaller tractors you'll feel every plunger stroke.

Mike wanted to get your thoughts...we have 12 acres of pasture and 5 acres of wood. 750 ft gravel driveway. Any thoughts on what HP tractor I need? I have been looking at the 30 - 40 HP range but curious on your thoughts.

I don't think you'll go wrong in that range. Bigger is better with tractors unless you're going into tight quarters, but on that size place, even with a 30 hp tractor and 5' brush hog you'd still get done fairly fast. You're headed the right direction.

Just remember one thing. Almost any size tractor can get most jobs done with the right matching equipment. My grandparents sold the farm in 1975 in pa. They farmed it with Massey Ferguson 50, farmall h, and another small tractor. Over 200 acres and 40+ milk cows My dad and uncle farmed 350 acres with an Oliver 80 and other assorted 40 to 50 horsepower tractors in the 50's. I get a kick out people using 100 plus hp tractor on same equipment we did with 50 hp tractor. Do understand the comfort on the newer tractors but most people don't have to live in them.

Could someone mention an example of any economy 4 x 5 bailer a 60 hp tractor could pull? Something I would be interested in looking at.

The only economy bailers are old used ones... and you get what you pay for. The lower the price the more restoration work it will need. . Even the small cheap end bailers to make the mini rounds are about $30k new.

If you're on flat ground and don't pick up large weights with the front end loader you may not need extra weight. But you definitely need proper ballast on hills for stability, when doing tillage work for traction, or when lifting when approaching the front end loader's maximum lift capacity. Ballast helps utilize the maximum power of the tractor.

Adam, I don't remember the exact model that was, I shot that at the end of a big farm show we have in this area and I grabbed it from a dealer I know. While I have no personal experience with the brand, they're selling a huge number of tractors and I've not heard of any major issues with the tractors or the company. If I were buying they'd be a brand I'd consider.

Hi, Mike. Great videos on various horsepower tractor sizes. I know I'm on thin ice here, but I wonder if you could tip toe around the issue of tractor reliability and tractor resale. The dicey part gets into naming brands, and you probably don't want to go there, but I wonder if you could figure out some way to skin that cat. I'd like to buy a 40hp tractor, but am concerned about reliability, warranty, availability of parts, dealer service (I know that's a huge variable that's locally determined), and resale. I was interested in Mahindra until I read some user reviews on KZfaq. Seems they're where the Korean automobiles were about 20 years ago--reliability is still iffy, parts aren't readily available, and dealer service is spotty and slow. I'm also interested in Kioti as an option to Kubota. Any advice?

Will, You nailed it, I won't recommend individual brands, but having said that, I wouldn't be afraid of purchasing any of the three you mentioned. I don't hear a lot of complaining from Mahindra people about reliability or parts availability, so I wonder if that was one customer that had someone poop in his Cheerios or if it could have been the dealer dropped the ball and blamed it on the company. Kubota, or course, is the leader in the compact business, Mahindra is the fastest growing in that world, and I've sold Kioti and can tell you their product and service are outstanding. My advice to you is to find a good, reliable local dealer that gets the job done and you can trust and buy what they're selling. You won't go wrong with any of the three in my opinion. -Mike

Just for the heck of it, I did an oh-so-scientific test the other day: I went to every brand website I could think of with a build and price feature, and "built" a utility tractor of around 102-105 PTO hp. Trying to get the specs as close as possible. Guess who was cheapest?? That's right- the "expensive green paint" one. AND it had better specs and more options than the others (Farmall, New Holland) I couldn't do Massey or Challenger because Agco doesn't have that feature. I did a Kubota, but they don't have an economy farm tractor line, they did the premium line first. Never tried Mahindra, I forgot about them,lol. The winner of my lil competition was the JD 6120E w/3 function loader pkg, HD hitch and 24/12 Hi-Lo trans. Dunno about in compact tractors, but in farm tractors, they're priced very competetively.

I had a 4025 that worked good just needed rear remotes so I bought a 5570 and the big problem was it over heated too easily and was hard to keep trash out of the radiator

One of my neighbours bought himself a Mahindra. Four wheel drive and about 75 hp. Nice tractor but there WERE problems. A warning buzzer kept sounding and even the dealer didn't know what it was for. Turned out a filter for the hydraulics had fallen off. It had not been spun on tight enough! Then the right rear wheel started wobbling. Turned out all but two nuts had fallen off in the field! They had not been torqued properly at the factory. Now there is some sort of issue with the instrument cluster. Overall, my neighbour is reasonably happy with his tractor but feels Mahindra needs to do something about their quality control. After all, they're a big established manufacturer.

Heck a 60 HP Massey 1760M that is coming out is 36K with a loader. Replacing the 1759. Can get an LS 4155 for around 27. I have heard too many people talking about Mahindra being junk.

The engines are okay but, going from what I have heard and seen, the cylinders are shit. Leaking and just failing all the time. I have a friend with one and he has lost two cylinders in less than a year. One on the back hoe. The other on the loader.

@@roflstomps324 Friend of mine has been waiting for a loader cylinder for about a month now, not sure if that's normal or due to this virus crap but still down a tractor because of it. Might be the same issue regardless of machine color right now as suppliers aren't supplying.

@@wildbill23c The time my friend had that issue he was told he had to wait a month. He asked why and they told him they have the cylinders but the hose assembly had to be shipped in from China. He just told them he would find his own and they could build it that way. He was able to get it within the week. Maybe it is the same? I don't know.

I don't have access to retail pricing. You'll have to talk to your local dealer. Prices do change either monthly or quarterly as manufacturer programs changes so its a moving target.

Lot's of loader work with that config; Permanent arm damage possibilities, been there did that. Always buy a tractor with the loader controls with easy (without stretching your arm out) reach. Also, had a 100 pto hp tractor and a 6' bush hog, wouldn't go any smaller, don't see how anyone would think that a 60pto hp tractor will work well, probably in 1st or 2nd gear and take forever mowing
