Why you shouldn't hit up with the driver. A giant misconception in the golf world today about hitting up on the golf ball when using a driver. He also discusses how hitting up can cause you to have many inconsistencies with direction control and distance.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

I've struggled with this for years, hitting the driver low on the face. I searched and searched because hitting "UP' on it would seem to bring the bottom of the face in play. YOU are the only one on the whole INTERNET to confirm this....on the ENTIRE INTERNET. Thank you so Much Tom ! It's a game changer.

I've got to play off a 'bad' 6 handicap for years and would like to get better or at least consistent, low 70's once in a while which brings the H'cap down, but most of the time low mid 80's and occasionally higher! With this Corona lockdown put a net in the back yard and took some slow motion swing video for first time. Hell...I knew there were issues but a hand flipping, two plane, casting (slightly but enough) swing nightmare....pure hand to eye ability so far and accounts for gross inconsistency. Could not solve it until I found this teaching content. Brilliant stuff. Watched a few of the basics and went to work...within a short time of re-recording and tweaking swings, for what must be the first time in my golf life I'm not casting over the top and with a bit of practice pure powerful striking on one plane. I'm still 'flipping' some on the way back and through after impact (poor arm extension) but not half as bad as before and after all these years I think it's going to take a wrist restraint to stop... would love to see a drill to help with this though! More sense and easy explanation for the normal golfer that could equally be applied to elite players than I've seen anywhere. Great work Tom.

This was just what I needed to hear. I absolutely bomb my 3 wood and leave the driver in the bag and this is EXACTLY the reason why. I read somewhere that you have to hit up on the driver and haven't been able to hit it since. But I hit down with the 3 wood and hit it driver distance. Great video. Will give this a try once quarantine is over. I would love to have the driver be a weapon again and use all 14 clubs in my bag.Thank you so much. Appreciate your content.

Hitting down with the driver (albeit ever so slightly) seems to make sense. If you compare it to tour pros who hit their 3 woods off the fairway, they hit a mile and there is no way in heck they are hitting up on the ball. Even if they tried, the smaller faces would practically thin it. So it stands to reason that even when you tee it up with a driver, there will be a slightly descending blow and I'm sure that's minimized by teeing it up more off of your lead foot. Can't wait to try this out.

I just found your channel and I'm so glad. I've always been told that I need to hit up for more distance on my driver, I have a low-mid driver launch angle which I like, and it carries roughly 260-275 yards with around 110 club head speed. I've always hit about level to a degree or two down on the ball. I don't really struggle with a huge miss, but if I have one it's to the right. I feel like I am going to top the ball if I go any further up in my stance to get an upward angle on it. Hitting up on the ball might work for some people, but I feel like it's not the case for me. Same for my woods, I always like to feel like I at least brush the ground/take a small divot after the ball.

I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you, John! Perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, believe it or not the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless! (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) Thus, I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver... Cheers! Tom

I'll have to test this out. Sound great. Just one comment though. I don't have any problems hardly with my driver, for the occasional slice. Usually down the middle with the ball toward the front toe. My problem come mostly with my irons after a great drive. Then hitting a duff or left or right of the target. You've made things so much easier then the expensive lessons I took, and still I'm dealing with inconsistency. With this tip, and the last three videos I'm now subscribe. Hey Tom, just saw this older vids of yours. Is this still your opinion on hitting up with the driver? Most of the Pros hit down with the big stick but they have higher Clubheadspeeds like in the 115-125+ Range and mostly hit fades for more control. With the average male Golfer the Clubheadspeed is like 90-95mph and hitting down would totally ruin Distance. Trackman stats prove that hitting up with the driver with that lower speed by 3-5 degrees or more benefits more carry, less Spin more roll cos of dynamic loft. I totally agree with hitting down with the irons but I think it’s wrong with the Driver for slower swingspeeds and Clubheadspeeds.

A level to very slightly descending AoA will work ok if swing speed is 110mph+ (although arguably not optimal) but how many golfers are able to produce that speed? Less than 1%? LPGA is up 3 to 4 degrees average, with around 90mph (closer to a good recreational player). Very, very few golfers will hit their driver better with a thought of hitting more down.

I've been thinking all along that I was the oddball for having the ball near the center of my stance. I tried for months to "hit up on the ball", and bombarded many houses on the left side of the fairway as a result. I've now realized a couple of points: 1. People who have the ball way forward in their stance have to to do so because they are sliding their hips, just like the guy in the Golf Digest article. 2. The only way to get a positive angle of attack without the clubhead getting out in front of your hands is to do do a slight squat on the back swing, then extend as the club nears the low part of the arc. This will turn a slight negative AOA into a slight positive. Also increases clubhead speed. The guy in the photo is also doing this.

Hi Tom, just got back from a week long trip of golf at various courses in the Carolinas. Played every day. I used foot spray on irons and woods to try to figure out why I consistently hit everything thin to toe with all my clubs. I managed to hit my driver pretty close to center after a few setup adjustments but could not get it above center on the face. I know all modern drivers want a high center hit so I always have teed half of the ball and sometimes a bit more above the face. Your explanation just shows why. I do not know how your videos suddenly showed up on my tablet, but I subscribed. When I was in Myrtle beach I would have called and taken a lesson. Hi Tom - just started watching your videos and find them very interesting ! I'm an 18 handicap and struggle with Driver. All pro's seem to say hit up with Driver - only hit down slightly if you have a swing speed like DJ or Justin Thomas, and that most hackers ( like me) need to hit up to get launch. Just changed my coach, so not sure what he'll advise me as lockdown here in UK and Golf Courses shut at the moment. What you say makes sense though - as you say the face starts to close when you hit up - as when I spray foot powder on the face all shots are heel side. If you can recommend one of your videos where you give complete Driver overview inc set up would be grateful. Thanks a lot Ken - London, England.

@SagutoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, Sorry for your present lockdown situation. Here's a link to a lesson video specific to the driver: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ld6cZ5pentaViYk.html In Stack and Tilt it’s the same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) There are just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Think of proper impact position - hands leading the clubface, bowed front wrist, "flying wedge" intact. It'd be difficult to retain those angles if we were actually hitting up on the ball. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants using extra high tees and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - the path should still be ever so slightly down. As mentioned the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.3 degrees - nearly level but slightly down nonetheless. Thus, I do not advocate hitting up on the ball, and trying to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. One ball position,one swing path, all makes sense. Why do you need numerous adjustments for different clubs ? No wonder I get so confused by golf magazines and lessons. I was originally taught that you hit irons and woods differently, and not understanding this is what holds golfers back.I began to doubt this when I saw a pro golfer take a divot with a 3 wood. I think the simpler you can keep it, the better.

I get the point that the PGA tour average angle of attack is 1.3 degrees down but that means 2 things. 1. That there are a ton of players with a positive angle of attack 2. The ones with a negative angle are not optimizing the distance capability of the driver. Trackman has shown that in order to get the ball to launch at the proper angle and with the proper spin for maximum "distance" you must have a slight positive angle of attack. You will never see a long drive champion hit down on a ball and win a competition. Having said that one should not intentionally hit up on a driver. Just swing normally and let the ball position determine whether you contact the ball on the downswing part of the arc, the upswing part or the level part of the arc.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
The impact position of the player stays the same throughout the bag - hands forward, shaft leaning forward of the ball. For this to happen, the attack angle will be down. The key to optimizing distance lies in the launch angle. For example, my driver loft is 8.5 degrees, but at impact I launch it at 14.4 degrees. This also causes my spin rate to be very low (2200 rpm). This launch angle is higher due to the extension of my body at impact. I am hitting slightly down but because I am extending, it prevents the club from driving straight into the ground. Here is a good video on this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lal1fpRhqc_DYac.html

It's critical to understand though that the hands are working up. The release is moving the clubhead down but the handle is moving up. The sensation is hitting up but the release provides the negative angle of attack. "Hitting down" on the ball is the wrong imagery you want imo.

So the very tall tee highth is also wrong as well I would think

Tee it up so that half of the ball is above the clubhead. As you swing up, the clubface begins to point more left. You have to compensate for this by opening the clubface a degree or two.

Vern - You have some leeway with ball position. I like the simplicity of keeping it consistent relative to the inside of the lead heel and simply adjusting the stance width depending on the length of the club. This works well for me and many of my students. Alternatively, the Stack & Tilt book prescribes a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and incrementally more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver. I hope that helps. Also, I see that you watched my recent fairway woods video, so perhaps that was of some benefit as well. By the way, if you'd really like to own this swing through your entire bag please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school as it is one of the best golf instruction values out there. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing and much more. The school's intuitive course curriculum greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. Cheers! Tom

Thought hitting up reduced spin, which is a goal for driver?
@SagutoGolf

Think of proper impact position - hands leading the clubface, bowed front wrist, "flying wedge" intact. It'd be difficult to retain those angles if we were actually hitting up on it. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants using extra high tees and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, believe it or not the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.3 degrees - nearly level but slightly down nonetheless! Thus, I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver... Cheers! Tom

This instruction should be mandatory for every person before they touch any club. 99% of all P.G.A. instructors waste your time and money trying to teach you to emulate some tour golf professional whose swing is not rationaly like any amatures, nor cold we make our swings like any professionals. Tom take the complex P.G.A. jargon and reduces it to its smallest common denominator so anyone can absorb it. I've waited years for this................!!! G.B.C. Esq.

Interesting that the top 18 out of 25 of the longest hitters on the Tour ALL hit up or are measured with a positive attack angle..... be careful of the information you are teaching golfers..... you may want to research more or ascertain more knowledge and reasoning behind specific statistics my friend. Example: Avg. LPGA Tour player AOA is +3.0...any thoughts to that??? ..... good luck!

Why is it you stack and tilt guys always use a 7 iron in your videos. You do a 14 minute video on how you should not hit up on the driver but you use a 7 iron no Driver was ever used in this video.

Search "driver" in my channel and you should see plenty of content, Kevin. Beyond that, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing through their bag, and where so many folks across the globe are now playing the best golf of their lives as a result. All for just $10 US/ month or $99/year. Beyond that, have fun out there playing with whatever style you choose to swing! Tom

Against Tiger Woods Basics. There we go. Run away from what the greatest player all time says. FIX YOUR GRIP, YOU'RE GRIP IS TOO STRONG. FIX YOUR POSTURE. You stand at the ball like if you're playing a fairway bunker shot. Also you rotate your hips way to much. Have you ever heard something about, coil. This happens when you rotate your shoulders more than your hips. The more you go to the gym (and do the right exercises), you will start to create this separation and feel the power. The quality of the sound is very bad in your video. That's weird, this is like the first thing you must learn before you make your first video. A real golf pro would approach this in a much different way. Be good at everything. I still think you have a good potential but read stuff on how Tiger swing the club, I know a lot of people says, nobody can swing like him. Since I watch his clinics, I gained nearly 50 yards on my tee shot and I have a sweet short game. I'm 5 foot 1 inche , 93 pounds and I hit the ball 260 yards on the nose all day. Stack & tilt will kill your swing over the time just like a strong grip does.

Geez dude chill! If what he's doing is helping the majority. Don't hate on him by referring to someone who is likely an exception to the rule. Like they all say, it doesn't matter how u swing or where the ball is. If u practice thousands of balls on any given swing u will figure out a way to overcome what u are doing wrong. What these pros are trying to show us is how to make it simple and not have to hit thousands of shot a month to keep everything perfectly calibrated. If u dumb down the golf swing, u won't have to worry about mishitting a tee shot etc etc. It becomes so easy it's second nature. So u goto the first tee with upmost of confidence! Which is ideally what we all are wanting... Right?
