Why so many all Japan selected Karate atheletes have appeared from Shoto Federation? Because they train Kata and Kumite based on their own Junro Kata.
Junro Kata is based on the method how to bring one's maximum power from his whole body. It was created by Tetsuhiko ASAI Shihan, the last legendary master in Karate history.
This DVD introduces the Junro Kata and "complete stepping maps and movement" as a supplement.
Edited and supervised by master Masao KAGAWA 9th Dan of Japan Karate Shoto Association, the director of national team of the public foundation all Japan Karate-do Association and the chairman of the Developping Athletes Committee of the same organization As an athlete he had become the top of Kumite/Kata tournament and later as the superiser he had raised Karate-do club of Teikyo university as a winning team. He also has raised a lot of all Japan selected Karate athletes from his students.

It likely has to do with the JKA being the first into the universities, the first to be recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Sports and Education (or whatever it was called), the largest organization, and the establishment of a real instructor training program at the Hombu that did produce, between roughly 1970 and 2000, one or two genuinely qualified instructors every year or two. In the early 1980s there were probably eight or nine world class instructors all clustered together at the Hombu, including Asai, Tanaka, Yahara, Kawawada, Osaka, and Kagawa. I know that's a while ago, but no other organization had that kind of depth chart, or that kind of reach within or without Japan.

@@barrettokarate Jesse bought into the idea not only that Karate originated in China, but that is now an essentially a watered down version of White Crane Kung Fu. This idea is espoused primarily by the "Bubishi" people who generally ignore the Okinawan and Japanese influences, or at least don't give them much credit at all. His videos are excellent, but the historical context must be taken with a grain of salt.

it would be better if we would keep in mind that there are restrictions in the techniques, as a result you will not witness the full effectivity. What I am saying is something entirely different, namely, that techniques which are apparently so effective in a safe dojo (not those that you apparently frequent) do not necessarily work on the street in a real situation. @@johnnyryan7939 The point of traditional karate is not simply to run out to see if it works in "the street" as so many wanna a be's" call it. It is meant to be a lifestyle of mental preparation for living a life seeking harmony with those around us. It is not a sprint to an imaginary goal of turning into a combat ready soldier but more appropriately a good citizen with a calm and focused mind. The fighting techniques are intended to be a last resort and they take many years to become proficient. I'm now in my 36th year as a sworn police officer and traditional karate formed the base of my training which allowed me to survive many deadly force encounters. I went on to work for many years as a nationally recognized police defensive tactics instructor. Many of those needed skills did not come from Karate. Karate taught me how to learn, how to remain calm and how to recognize what works and what does not in an uncontrolled environment. Almost all traditional martial arts can provide that basic framework as long as the student put in the work over many years.
@johnnyryan7939

@@grnhrntskato Thank you for your kind reply. Different people may have different reasons for training karate. Mine is to provide self-defence. In Japan, there are many police, there is little violence. Other parts of the world are not so fortunate. It is a fact that most karate practitioners are unable to defend themselves effectively. Modern karate does not train them for this. It looks great in the dojo, great in the arena, but it does not work effectvely in self-defence. Which is unfortunate, because I believe that the study of kata (directed toward self-defence), provides a highly disciplined and effective training in self-defence. Your mind-set is no doubt admirable, but if karate is not focused on self-defence "in the street", i.e., in the real situation where the assailant does not stick to dojo rules, karate students will end up going to MMA or Bazilian Ju-Jitsu where the necessity for these real-life skills is recognised.

@@johnnyryan7939 You are right in that sense. I am also a long time practitioner of Judo (until covid shut us down anyway) and Arnis de Mano. Judo maintained it's traditional roots until recent years where an overwhelming concern for the safety of the players during competitions has pushed the organizers to prohibit many techniques. Of course Arnis is more concerned with what works in the practical sense however it is not practical to train with a machete or balisong. I don't teach traditional karate anymore as my efforts are focused on being a student of judo and the delivery of police defensive tactics however I firmly believe traditional martial arts training produces some of the best people one will meet. I do not always get that impression from many who join the pop up MMA gyms, slap on a stack of tattoos and enhance their performance with illegal drugs. Their goals are not the same. Best Regards.

Black belt doesn't mean expert or master as many are alluding to, it means you are "supposed" to be good enough to start understanding your training properly. This inaccurate concept has been a sad marketing campaign that dilutes good martial arts training but also gives people something to work towards. It's like a college degree, just because you put in the work and went through it, doesn't mean that person is a straight-A student. Not everyone is doing to be a proper badass even if they come from a good school. Let's all be honest, you need some people who are there because they love it and show good spirit, not just because their technique is A+. I am still frustrated by seeing the improper technique, but good on anyone showing up to train and trying to get better. Also when looking at a more traditional school, you have to keep Karate in your mind as a larger context than just the moves. Similar to yoga, while the physical is a tremendous aspect of your training, that is not all of it. Proper respect for our man at 4:10. Look at his knuckles, straight rocks. Also the belt thing. Some belt fades and run down quicker than other belts. That guy came out of this school.

Yeah agreed.Though as a practitioner i don`t want to look down anyone, many of those karateka don`t really deserve the black belt. And yeah that guy at 4:10 has solid bases.....but as a consolation, it is from Japan. Different mentality and hard training from young age. Also Kagawas karate is really prominent in this guy. It`s to rigid and follows the old application without considering refreshing his karate. It is a big difference how do u give the order for execution. Do u count for the technic or for your breading. If u want to see a different approach to karate , without being biased i recommend to look at Kasuyas or Andre Bertels karate....big difference. PS: most probably this guy would kick the shit out of me.......without being biased :-)

Then there is no reason to withold "black belt" to adult practicioners for 4+ years. Lets be honest, somewhat gifted student could get half decent technique (minus the BS) down in a single year. You might argue, that belt grade also mean, that the karateka has deeper understanding of the system, yet many dont even understand kata application.

You don’t need detail words, you just need to pay attention to body mechanics. It might take a couple times, but if you’re moving with purpose( and not just flailing like a dumbass) you will notice the shifting of weight, the footwork, the full extension, the difference in push, pull, or redirection movements, and also the hip rotations within the process of every strike.

In Spain, depending on the gym in which you train and the "friend" that gym of the karate federation is, they give you the belt. I have seen passed black belt exams in which the applicant did not know how to give a suki. In the end, it is a business. It is a pity.

some students have great technique while a lot could be sharper, i see they all wear the black belt, at least for me, by the time you reach the black belt your techniques should be very percise and decisive and look as close to perfection as possible, of course while up until shodan you only know so many techniques and katas you can't be perfect and there're still heaps of stuff to learn, the stuff you do know should be honed and sharpened well, at least in my opinion training in a small group of people can help you learn karate better than in this kind of setting.

And one poor Machida...Wow...LOL I could beat most of shotokan ,,masters;; and I did it anyway before. In Englad in Shotokan club against 4th dan. You have no skills to real fight at all. Touch, shout very lod even if opponent can't feel this punch and get a point. For what??? LOL ANyway this 4th dan was completely lost when he had to take strong punches and fight a real fight. Has been destroyed ( on the ground) in less tan 45 seconds. I'm kyokushinkai 1 st dan btw . You are most soft with significant lack of power and unable to take a pain and fight. This fight-point-stop training is useless . To fight shotokan should start fight instead of this stupid shout - toch - get point because in real fight you have to take many punches and nobody will stop the fight to back on position becuase the other guy has been touched LOL There is no shotokan guys in K1 and MMa because shotokan style is useless for full contact real fight.

Normal humans ! this is not normal for the majority ! kagawa is an amazing talented fighter and technician. Not everyone will ever get near his level . i can understand if it was just for lets say an international team training but this is not an elite athletic group . my only criticism is of the training is the throwing around on un matted areas . the rest is fine ! some of the ego related criticism from the perfect few is unwarranted. fire away !

@@elismith3402 It's a belt with a silk or satin layer sewed on a white cotton base material that is designed to wear out almost immediately. A new belt like this will start to wear out within a month and will look like this in less than five years. The ones that look shredded and stringy? Those have certainly been abused in order to look like that. A heavy duty 100% cotton belt is dyed with color all of the way through the material. It will never look like that belt. Don't think that this somehow represents hard work. It's a shortcut. Do you wear a gi that's stained with yellow sweat and ripped with big ass holes? By this logic, that means years of hard work and honor. Most people will get a new gi when it gets worn out, so why wear a ratty looking belt with a new karate gi?
