Hi, Ben. It's been a minute! I always enjoy listening to your perspective. Those who have never been to China and only know about it through their 4-inch screens will never truly understand the beauty of living and working there. As you said, 'nowhere is perfect,' and I agree. I've experienced many places, including the USA, and nowhere, not even my home country, has ever given me the peace of mind that I've experienced while being in China. Stay blessed, Ben.

That's a very interesting point... I always slept very well in China for some reason (actual sleep not speaking metaphorically.) It probably has something to do with that. I hope you're doing well, Kadrian! It's crazy to see you've been subscribed 6 years. In many ways that seems like yesterday... but also a lifetime ago!

@@BenTeachesEnglishOverseas Alright Ben, if you find your life lacks structure as an ennui suffering rich bastard, how about building an Earthship in Uruguay or somewhere and turn it into a "Ben Teaches English" school? If you're going to go back to teaching I imagine it must be difficult to respond to instruction when one could easily afford to have one's troublesome boss "disappeared", as it were? Just a thought old boy, I've been a follower of this channel under different handles almost from the start and it's my favourite channel on travel/finance. Cheers for all your hard work.

My personal experience after leaving in 2022. Job requirements have increased to the point it feels like you need a BA in Education and a teaching "license" (not a TEFL). I see a lot of schools looking for science, math, history, or business teachers. I tried applying. They asked if I have a degree in those subjects. I have a degree in International Studies. They hang up the phone. It's interesting because the books have a lot of the content. Majority of expats have passed high school math, science, and history. You don't need to be a nuclear engineer to teach middle school science class. Yet that's pretty much what Chinese schools are asking for. Also, schools nowadays employ staff that don't know how to process the work permit or they have some other issues.
@JalomMatia
@JalomMatia 2 ай бұрын
1-Schools want a teacher with a degree in the subject being taught because that is how they market to parents to get more students. 2-the top students in high school or even middle are above the level of what you probably learned in highschool. if it's been a few years since you graduated from highschool, will you be able to answer their question? unlikely. look online at example SAT/A-Level/AP exams for Maths, Physics or Chemistry and tell me you could answer all of those questions when a student asks you.

If I were to go abroad is there a way to meet the requirements or get around this? I’m not sure if there are specifics to these years but currently I’m treated like a BT where I have someone who I meet with weekly. Then I have to go BT meetings once a month. Just looking into this some because I really would like to go abroad.

Is teaching English abroad as paperwork intensive as it is in the USA?

Yes, you’ll need to process a work visa which requires paperwork. The doc requirements for teachers in each country are different. You don’t need to process any docs in our homeland, only if you want to teach public schools K-12 which requires a bachelors in education/certification.

@tc2334
@tc2334 7 ай бұрын
@@jryanp The double reduction policy is the Chinese government's attempt to cut down on the overload of work that Chinese kids have. So, basically, the government has required to schools to cut down on homework and for after-school academic training centers to close down. They've also started to place less emphasis on English-learning. As a result, training centers, which are the bulk of employers of English teachers are closing down/going underground.

@@BenTeachesEnglishOverseas I'm not knowledgable enough to know the reasons for why people don't choose China. But from my experience and the experiences of every foreigner who I know well here, it's not to do with politics at all. But I guess it's how you define politics. The biggest detractor for pushing foreigners away was the handling of covid and the difficulty to return afterwards. Would you define that as politics? The things I don't like are the lying culture, everything is fake, it's more difficult to make really close chinese friendships than with foreigners. Sacrificing all friends and family in original country. The poor ability to organise more than a day into the future. I don't think just saying politics is an honest reflection of why people 'can't do' China. And if it's correct it requires a concise definition of what you mean by politics.
