One of the most effective things you can do to protect yourself from catching a germ and becoming a statistic, whether it’s a global pandemic like COVID-19 or just every single other day of your life, is something that people have been trying to get you to do since you were like 2. Wash your hands. With good ol’ soap. And do it the right way. That’s it. Here’s the science of handwashing!

@@___LC___ You know, I think I do remember a lab we did back in 8th grade for Living Environment/Biology that involved unions and using substances such as iodine the see the cell walls and the interior of the cells, but I am pretty sure we still had to use microscopes. But if this is not the same experiment as the one you are talking about, can you explain it, I am curious? Also, regardless of the onion experiment I did, this experiment which I have not seen before still interests me the most as far as biology goes, I have never liked biology that much but this was really cool. And, at least the science that I have learned in the past recent years of school, middle school and high school sciences still have offered a fair amount of knowledge and experiments, although yes I wish we did more than just memorize principles and equations at certain times, especially recently with my chemistry and physics classes. Both had a rather equal sharing of equations and lab experiments applying the knowledge, but I still yearn for more simply because I really love the sciences.

Surgical soap is so effective because it has a purple dye in it that shows when you haven't scrubbed all the soap off so you don't carry the soap into surgery.
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Betadine soap is most frequently used and is reddish-brown and easily seen. Chlorhexidine may be dyed or not. The dyed is use to disclose areas of the patient's skin that haven't been painted (scrubbe). Preps are contact germicides. The longer they make contact, the better they work. Except in unusual situations, they should not be removed from the pt's skin until after closure. Then it's done largely for aesthetics.

@@KoralMae I'm not criticising anyone for wearing gloves - surgical, nitrile or regular leather or woolen gloves - you do you. However, some people are being given a false sense of security by gloves - wearing them for hours on end does not alleviate cross contamination or germ transfer. If we all had a huge supply, doubled up and removed and binned the outermost set after every action then they'd be perfect. I've been wearing gloves, but I've also been fastidious about hand washing - possibly too fastidious as my hands have dried out. The issue is people sticking on a pair of gloves and thinking "that'll do" for the day. Anyway, sounds like you've got the correct approach. Take care & stay safe✌️

@@KoralMae I don't wear gloves, BUT, when I get home (avoiding touching my face) I have a solution of 1/3rd cup of bleach to 3.8 litres of water (1 US gallon) in a spray bottle ready at home. I wash my hands then take the bottle and cloth to my car and spray the steering wheel, indicators, handbrake, door handles and door grip then my house door handles and then the shopping bag handles and bottom of the bags. Also wipe plastic milk bottle handles and other plastic bottles. Then wash my hands again. Then I relax knowing I have made a reasonable effort to protect myself. If i do catch the 'lurgi' it was not without want of trying.

@@enderlord5347 I am not talking about hot water (above 40°C). But it makes a difference if you take 10°C water or 35°C water. In warm water with soap you achieve the same germ an virus killing effects much faster, because the soap (tensides) can interact more efficiently with the cellular membranes.

When I was little, I was taught to wash my hands with soap and water. I was never taught HOW to wash my hands with soap and water the right way. I didn't learn that until this year and saw a poster put out by the NHS. I'm 35. So, thank you. There are undoubtedly many people just like me who never learned how, because our parents never learned the right way, and their parents didn't know the right way, etc.
