Not all birds migrate in the winter. Why is this, and what do they do to stay warm?

Norwegian winter nights aren’t for sissies

“For birds and animals that must live out in Norway’s frigid winters, every second has to be spent finding enough food not just to survive the day, but also the long hard night.”
Why don’t all birds fly south for the winter?

“Whether or not a bird flies south for the winter depends a lot on what food the species eats.”

Me and my sister once slept outside during the winter. We used the trick of digging a small cavern in the snow to fit two people (we dug the snow cavern before we decided to sleep in it (we were kids)). While sleeping, we had our sleeping bags, a few layers of clothes, tucked inside the tiny snow cave, and blocked the entrance/exit with a heavy cloth to prevent any cold drag.

I've slept in the cold several times. Once in a tent for a weekend in winter and the second time in my car for two weekends in back-to-back years during early March. All I can say is layer, build a nest (yes literally, pillow and blankets piled around you), and leave as little of you exposed as possible. Honestly, the tent was worse because it did little to nothing to block the frigid breeze and we slept directly on the ground. At least in my car, I could turn it on and run the heater for a few minutes right before I went to bed.

Winter Camping requires layers of dry clothing, warm head & face, warm hands and warm feet. Stay out of the wind and stay dry. Foam/straw/grass Insulation from the ground, a wind resistant tent and a sub-zero rated sleeping bag. A source of heat like a fire or stove, and hot drinks + chocolate & friends keeps morale up.

I've seen chickens lose toes cause of the cold, not all birds evolved to deal with the cold, but many birds have a natural antifreeze in their blood. I have 3 birds in my room and one is a Quaker parrot and you can look it up lives just fine in NY cold winters and have a thriving wild population which is a far cry from their homeland.

For very cold nights outdoors we use the military surplus sleeping system consisting of two sleeping bags and a Goretex cover. Minus 50 degree out in the open sleeping is possible when wearing the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System in the sleeping bag

Dug out a cave in the side of a big snow pile. Then dug a pit for cold air to sink into on one side with an outlet hole in the bottom off to the side. then dug a shelf with a small tunnel up and out of the top of the pile where i put a candle. Then took off a layer of sweater and used it as a door flap to cover 90% of the entrance leaving enough open to supply the candle and I with fresh air. It was -20c or so but it got warm enough that i just had my t shirt and jeans on most of the time

The best way to stay warm when sleeping outdoors: As some of those birds do, huddle together. If you share a sleeping bag with someone, you will both stay warm. Sometimes that can be the most fun way to stay warm, too.

One time I snuck out of my house in November (in OH) and locked myself out. Fearing punishment I derided to stay outside. I slept with my dog under some hay in his dog house that night and pretended like I was up super early to feed them. Never got caught and my dog kept me warm :)

I have been outside during the night in the winter, I live on northen sweden, My internal thermostat is higher than most others, I get uncomfortable when it is hotter than 20 degrees C, But i prefer it to be 16-18 degrees C. I often wear short sleeved shirts during the winter, It feels like im breathing deeper and get more relaxed when it is -15-20 degrees C.

I'm from the Faroe Islands, and I get extremely uncomfortable at 20+ degrees C. I'm most comfortable at 10 to 12 C, which is the average yearly temperature there. I can't handle cold well either, as it's not normal for the Faroe Islands to be very cold (record low is a bit lower than -12 C). Anything lower than around -5 C is too much. :P I moved to Denmark a few years ago, and about half of the year is uncomfortable for me, lol... :P

For real migration is weird. I was taking a walk in the early hours of the morning (like 4:30) and it was about 10 degrees or so. While I was out, I saw geese huddled in a single unfrozen corner of a local pond. I don't know how they could be okay like that, or why they weren't farther south still

There was a guy in Maine who somehow managed to survive winters outdoors for 27 years. Locals called him the north pond hermit and police were after him for the food and supplies he regularly stole from local summer camps, to live off of. They finally caught and arrested him 2 years ago. Here's a news article about it. news.yahoo.com/maine-hermit-living-wild-27-years-arrested-163447480.html

Alexandra Olson Species in the Tit family are referred to as Chickadees in the new world and Tits in the old world. The chickadees in the states are the Mountain, Black-capped, and Carolina Chickadee (with the Boreal Chickadee barely reaching the northern states, Grey-headed Chickadee in interior Alaska and adjoining Canada, and the Mexican Chickadee of Mexico and reaching the mountains of SE Arizona and SW New Mexico).

There are many species of birds that live in my area that don't migrate. The species vary from small wild birds, all the way to geese and ducks. You can find them year-round, and they never leave. You can find them year round our Lakes and on people's properties. There's a group of ducks and geese, that live in the park, but never leave regardless of the time of year. But I was told in school that birds migrate, but this seems to be the outliers.
