I think that "I'm to old to learn a new language" is the most stupid excuse people can say and I completely don't understand it. No matter how old I am I don't want to stop my self improvement. Why would I do that? That's a nonsense. Learning languages is really beneficial for us because it improves our brains. When you're really old and learn new things, it can prevent dementia and actually make you younger. Even if learning is difficult for you, it's still a great brain exercise. That's why I think that we shouldn't stop learning new things throughout our lives. Some people in their 30s or 40s also feel too old to learn and I pity them. People, you'll probably live at least 60 or 70 years, so how can you be old now? Do you really want to stop leaving in the middle of your life?
@sashokyshn8058

well, i completely agree with you, because these excuses are very embarrassing, and sooo funny. ah, i’m too old for this shit… what? what are you talking about? you are human. so why did your ancestors progress and you - no? why don’t you just continue their fight? so i think it depends, well like everything in this world, on parents. because parents are a crucial part of our life. they gives us first information about this world, about people, how to treat people. don’t give up. your ancestors did, and you do.

Haha your f*cking normies😂 When we get older, we all most likely had some failing trials on everything from taking math courses, to play an instrument to learning languages. As older we get as more hard wired and stubborn we become. We lose the ability to quickly pick up on new words and phrases and we getting more tired, so it’s over for learning new things then

Learning at 9 vs 22 are completely different experiences. However, learning at 22 vs 52 is the same. At this stage, it boils down to how much time you can spend learning and practicing deliberately. For example, when I was 20 I could pretty much treat English learning as a part time job. Now, I couldn't possibly dedicate that much time for language learning.

It's always great to see people combatting the "too old" excuse. From my experience as a language teacher, it definitely boils down to the fact that the older we get, the more aware of our inhibitions we are. I always tell my students - especially those that use it as a barrier for trying, - that if they don't make any mistakes, I won't have anything to correct. If you have something corrected, it's likely to stay with you. Try to get over the "embarrassment" barrier. Good luck to everyone learning a language! And nicely summarised, Veronika. Let's hope this breaks some people out of these excuses. :)

Maybe other issue could be boredom. I think is necessary vary the things we do to learn the language because I feel that otherwise it may become monotonous and then we get bored. So finding some different activities is also something to consider. 😃

As a person in 30s, working 12 hours a day and only resting once a month, I've always felt I'm not in 20s anymore and that it's too late to learn English. I also felt I didn't have enough time. but, this year, I wanted to make my life more meaningful. To someday live a different life, I decided to ease some of my businesses. I chose to focus on just a few of the most important things and dedicate at least 5 hours a day to learning English. I am now desperately struggling to learn English. So,, I've felt i'm gradually improving these days😀

Language learning seems to one of the few domains where it is socially acceptable to be condescending to those who struggle to be proficient at it. Bad at driving? Golf? Tennis? Singing? That's perfectly fine, but dare to suck at learning languages and everyone feels like they have a licence to declare you lazy and/or stupid.

Hi Veronika, how's it going? I agree that those 6 excuses disturb people learning a new language, but on excuse number 1, I think that analytical thinking in adults is a barrier that difficult learning because most people think is necessary to do everything correctly to communicate instead of just trying to communicate. That analytical thinking also influences excuse number 6 because the fear of making mistakes takes shyness.
