There have been countless films and tv shows that have depicted Princess Diana and the Royal Family, but none have dared to challenge their power and mistreatment of Diana Spencer the way Spencer does. The Kristen Stewart Princess Diana movie is captures the very soul of Diana as a human and incredible mother. It frames her experiences with the royals as a horror film, cold, judgemental, callous. It helps that the events of the new Princess Diana movie are mostly fictional, but the people their relationships and the emotions felt by Diana are all real. Tbh I didn’t read the pearl eating scene as Diana being rebellious and removing her shackles, but rather as visual symbolism for her eating disorder. She’s forcing herself to eat, to make it seem like everything is okay, but downing the soup is like chewing on pearls. It also doesn’t help that Charles and QE are glaring at her, increasing her anxiety.

I think that scene allows for multiple interpretations. The moment I saw that scene there was only one sentence on my mind: "Casting pearls before a swine" The words means for someone to not appreciate a good thing.. Like, the royal title itself is a pearl necklace. It's expensive, it's classy, everybody wants it-- but she doesn't. It's uncomfortable, it strangles her, it's ugly. So, in her head, she broke it apart and EATS it. Because in her eyes, her title doesn't mean anything. Rather than wearing it, she would rather destroy it, eat it up. It's not important anyway.

I agree.. the pearl eating scene can be interpreted in more than one way.. It shows how Diana's eating disorder is not her choice and that it isn't in her control.. it subtly shows us that her disorder partly stems from the toxicity of the royal family manifesting itself as the pearl necklace which feels like a noose round her neck.. It is important to understand how a bulimic person views the food which they ingest...and regurgitate later.. the food becomes a symbol for all the things that haunt them .. scare them.. they cannot physically stand the fact that it is inside their body to a point where nothing can help except throwing up..

Yeah, the message I got was that she was losing her damn mind. I have no idea what "shackles" she would possibly be removing. I mean, it's clear that Charles is being an unfaithful husband, but this is a really OTT way to handle that, IMO.

@@aidendoe5775 She had more of a choice in the matter than the others did. Surely the real Diana knew that becoming a princess would be a full-time job, but she may have imagined that her prince would be there to hold her hand the entire time. It was marriage that she was naive about, not royalty. And unfortunately, Charles is probably the least romantic out of the whole family.

The filmmakers said that this movie is more of a fictional fantasy movie, imagining what would Diana be like during her Christmas. So it's not a straightforward biopic movie we've seen many times before. It's very different movie of this subject matter

As an european, I have to say that here in Europe we considered Kristen an amazing actress since forever. She even has a freacking Cesar. That is something super hard to win for an american in Europe.

I know people think Kristen Stewart can't act after the Twilight films, but to be fair to her, that character was written that way. She actually nailed it. I've seen her do well in other things and she's been around a lot longer than people realize. Spencer is one movie I'm actually looking forward to seeing, first thing out of Hollywood in a long time that I've been interested in.

People hate what they don't understand. People who have read the Twilight books are the ones that can appriciate her more and more. It's basically what the book says, what are people expecting exactly? Kristen was doing her best with the material she was given. If anything Twilight has a problem, it's mostly the script, directing, dialogue, and CGI, not her fault at all cuz she's not part of those stuff. She has been picking better projects to showcase more of her talent. Speak and Camp X Ray shows that Kristen can do different roles especially Camp X Ray, does anyone ever thought Kristen can play a military very well??

I think Seberg should be on this list too, while the script was kinda cliche, Kristen was absolutely amazing in the movie, she did her best with the material she was given and she made the movie semi watchable. She could've gotten an Oscar nomination for Seberg if the script was better. Her being a versatile actress is extremely underrated

This is exactly I'm talking about, that's why Spencer and The Crown portrayal of Diana works. Both Kristen Stewart and Emma Corrin treated Diana as a fictional character, even Corrin said so. We are consumed by Diana or the idea of Diana. Many portrayed Diana but no matter what accent or physicality, these 2 actors just succeeds on it.

She's NOT a fictional character. I mean... using her this way just seems so wrong! Diana was "The People's Princess" NOT because she was bored, weak, dismal, and hallucinating! She NEVER refused to smile for the cameras the way this movie makes it look. She went out of her way to make people feel special. This movie made her look nearly schizoid. *DIANA SPENCER: GHOST HUNTER?*

@@maxcovfefe I don't think this film was intended as a depiction of who she was. The "real" Diana, as it were. I personally think the Christmas wknd was intended to show how trapped, isolated, suffocated and out of place she was ever since she joined the Royal Family. Only feeling free and truly herself while being away. The film's strength and it's success in communicating that comes from how it actually makes the viewer share those emotions, albeit partially.

Kristen finally gets the recognition she deserves! Her eyes are so expressive. Her mannerism is on point throughout the whole film. Her performance is so well-deserved to be nominated for Oscar. The score and cinematography also deserve recognition.

I always thought that Kristen Stewart had such beautiful eyes anyway. I was stunned by this movie and performance. Poor Diana. Charles should have just told her that he needed a virgin to be his royal partner and mother of his children and would she agree to it. Then she would have known just what she was walking into.

Between Kristen Stewart here and Robert Pattinson in the new Batman movie, they have both move past their twilight beginnings in such a fundamental way. She is such an outstanding actress who has been disregarded for too long and I cannot wait to see this movie. I was even more excited to know she was in it but as someone who grew up in the 90s I remember Diana and when she died I cannot wait to see this film. Great review

People cannot get through to their heads that her character, Bella Swan was written to be boring, klutzy and with little outside interests other than her vampire boyfriend on purpose. Even when you consider that, you can argue Kristen was successful in portraying that on film.

People like to try discrediting her by bringing up Twilight which is wrong because she just portrayed Bella like how Bella was written in the books. In reality, Kristen is an incredibly nuanced actress, she has loads of talent.

Although some critics call the pheasant motifs as "on the nose" or "hammy" , perhaps they are right. What isn't hammy however, is the "mise en scene" with the pheasants (proxy for peasants). Opening scene, 3 huge military tracks drive over a pheasant bird laying on the road leading to Sandringham castle, just missing it's head by inches on screen, you watch each truck expecting the pheasant to be be-headed (this is very obvious), but then the camera cuts away, and we don't see the inevitable happen, if it even does? Wow, the reference to Diana's future fate? As we know she died in car accident on a road in France. That is masterful storytelling.

The colors of the palace, specifically Diana’s green bathroom and the walk-in freezer filled with food. It’s was the colors mostly for me that reminded me of the shining.

I love the cinematography in this. Pablo larraìn chose the beautifully mundane and conflicted colours to show Diana's conflict in this film. Really gives it a dark and melancholic look.

This is the same cinematographer of France's masterpiece, Portrait of a Lady On Fire, highly recommend checking that out, it's like you're watching a beautiful painting moving from scenes to scenes

As people complain Hollywood lacks originality, go watch some Foreign movies, they have lots of good original movies that Hollywood doesn't explore that much. The problem is American people are extremely lazy at reading subtitles, probably can't read at all 😂 Always prefer subs over dubs

This is not your typical biopic and that was low key refreshing when I saw it. I love Stewart's performance - and frankly wouldn't mind her taking the Oscar home ( I still haven't seen WSS or LP so I cant say yet who my favorite is, but Stewart should definitely be nominated)

im constantly amazed at how high Kristen Stewart raises the bar for herself. shes so passionate about it that it shows. just watching the minin clips of the movie give me goosebumps. one of the greatest actress of our time.

Such an unexpected film. It really put me inside the mind and psyche of Diana rather than focusing on the specific events in her life that have been covered already ad nauseam. Aside from some small pacing issues, this film was brilliant!

a real tribute is to make sure she is never forgotten, including how she was, how she was treated and what happened to her. Not something you should brush under the carpet and forget. Her life is a lesson for everyone on how not to treat strong independent women who wants to make real change in the system.

This is actually a note to my previous aforesaid comment mentioned below. At first i didn't know who the cinematographer was for the film, but i checked the cast and crew names and found it out. Claire Mathon. I love her work in the film, especially those beautifully melancholic colours that are imparted to give a frustrated and conflicted look into Diana's life and her marriage. Looking at her previous work, i found out she worked with celìne sciamma on Portrait of a lady on fire and petite maman. I hope she finds even more great films to work on and wish the best to her.

Spencer must have been a good movie, because after it was over, I just sat quietly for a long time thinking about it. Kristen Stewart was wonderful in the role. So many doubted her ability to carry it off. I just have some trouble hearing all of the dialog with all of the low whispering so had to turn the sound way up sometimes.

Kristen Stewart is an amazing actress, and looking back at her career, I definitely regret the view I took on her due to Twilight. She got wrapped up in a garbage project, and that colored the views of a lot of people. But she is incredible outside of Twilight, and the more projects I see her in, the more her talent and charisma shine through.

I can't wait to watch this. BTW his last name is pronounced like "Lara" + "Inn* for an english speaker. He's one of the few directors out that continues to make original work and hasn't sold out. Also I notice he feels more comfortable with medium-sized budgets, a rarity these days.

Yeah that movie also makes me at the edge with Natalie Portman's chef kiss perfomance as Jacqueline Kennedy . Suprise how Kristen and Natalie delivered this 2 brilliant perfomance and get nominated yet didn't won the oscar .

In the end when Diana leaves with her sons, order at a drive through and spends the day outdoors, none of it actually could have happened because of paparazzies, I can't help but think, that was the kind of life Princess Diana must have really wanted. Stewart was excellent. The best portrayal of Diana up-to-date.

I disagree with your analysis of Charles as a villain. Grossly flawed, yes, but he is trying to teach his sons to survive monarchy in the only way he knows how, the only way he has been taught, and the only way he knows works. William's future is the same as Charles' and no amount of escapism or wishful thinking will make him an ordinary boy. Charles knows that the sooner William becomes comfortable shooting a pheasant, the more harmonious his mindset will be with the life prescribed for him, with its rigid Christmas traditions. Charles and Diana's parenting styles are vastly different but share a common aim: helping their sons - particularly William - navigate and cope with the life they have been born into and cannot escape.

The thing that makes him villanous is that he has the power to change those rigid traditions, to make things easier for their sons. But he wont. He simply doesnt care enough about the wellbeing of his children, there are more important things like nonsense traditions.

She's done a lot of work with the French, and has been a Chanel ambassador for years, so I would say the industry hasn't been blackballing her at all, at least not in the last 5 years. I think mainstream American perceptions of her are weirdly dated though.

I would love to enjoy the film, but I studied at that castle where it was filmed, so I always burst out laughing when I see the scenes. It is a castle in Germany where the tax officers of Northrhine-Westfalia get trained.

Kristen Stewart is great at what she does! She has done different types of films with complex characters and it works. Her passion is incredible when you listen to her interviews. She did Bella very well, I've read the books and she nailed it. People just hate for the sake of hating. Watch her movies without bias, you might surprise yourself hahaha

Through the movie, we realised that it was such an unbearable, toxic situation for EVERYONE, ( not only Diana), that by the time she leaves, we all thought Thank God! This is the best for all. The poor Queen……… she had to tolerate someone in her own house, who clearly did not want to be there and spoiled Christmas for everyone. Great ending! We all sighed a sigh of relieve when Diana left.

There is ONE Role for EVERY person that reveals the MASTER actor within. And this role is seen immediately for what it truly is. This Actress has revealed her MASTERY of the acting genre with this role utterly. If one could imagine how utterly controlled, suffocating and contrived a life in the royal family would be if you were a NATURAL human being and NOT a robot, then Her imagined expression of utter terror at her Confinement is masterfully portrayed by Kristen on so many different and very deep levels, one of which is of course her bulimia which only reveals the affect of such complete oppression of one's Own identity and individuality "for the greater good of england and her people" as the perverse charles put it. Every action Kristen takes is to express HER own SELF and NOT the Royal family and their absurd INSANE traditions. I do believe that Kristen actually tapped INTO Diana her self for this role and revealed the INSANITY that Diana had to deal with on a daily basis with the "Royal INSANE family". Kristen Steward is a MASTER and this role reveals that fact in every way.

This movie is a work of art with amazing acting, it's not a good movie to watch and be entertained though.. i literally paused it to take a nap and probably would have just not finished it if i hadn't rented it for hecking $20 on amazon. I knew nothing of her previously and If i hadnt looked into her life and what all went on before i watched this i would have been pretty lost with this movie since nothing is explained well, knowing about her life is almost a pre-requisite to enjoy this movie properly

Why did her voice irritate me though. She obviously studied Diana’s voice from any interview she could find but that was her shy interview voice, not her real voice.
