Why Storm Clouds Turn Green Before a Tornado

Why do clouds turn green before a tornado occurs? Are these green clouds directly linked to tornadoes forming? Lets find out…
Hidden inside visible sunlight is the rainbow of colors all mixed up. If an object reflects back, or scatters all that light, that object appears to us, white as well. If an object absorbs all the light, and scatters none back, it appears black to us. That’s the main reason why my black car gets hotter than the white car parked next to me.
If an object absorbs only some of the colors in the spectrum and scatters back others, it appears to our eye, the colors scattered back. So a red apple absorbs blues and greens and scatters back red. Bodies of clear water, absorb reds, and yellows first, and scatter back mostly blue.
Some of the biggest thunderstorms can generate areas of concentrated heavy rain and hail that look like waterfalls. Storm chasers call this the core. Sometimes storm clouds part giving you a glimpse into the core aloft.
If you’re underneath the storm base, around midday, the core is often blueish or a gorgeous turquoise. But in the late afternoon and evening when most storm activity occurs, angled golden and reddish sunset light might mix with the blue precipitation core and the net effect is a greenish color. Yellow and blue makes green!
The sky is blue because the gas molecules mostly nitrogen and oxygen scatter the blue wave lengths all over the place while the warmer wavelengths tend to pass through. That's why the sunset turns red. As the sun's altitude becomes lower, it shines through more and more atmosphere. All the blue is scattered first and it's mostly only the warmer visible wavelengths that reach our eye.
Another way a storm can add a yellowish filter to the blue core is by kicking up a lot of dust. The more powerful the storm, the more wind, and often, the more dust flying through the air. Looking through this yellowish air into the blue core can also give a net greenish effect to a viewer.
So, what does it mean when the clouds are green? The green color in storms doesn’t guarantee a tornado, but it usually means there’s a powerful thunderstorm with heavy rain and hail.
And powerful thunderstorms that produce tornadoes often produce heavy rain and hail. So, it wouldn't hurt to have a plan if you see a storm cloud turn green.
Why are Tornadoes green? Tornadoes come on all the shades of grey, sometimes almost bright white, and other times dark black. This is all relative to the viewer and the current lightning situation. If a tornado is well lit, it appears brighter, If it is silhouetted against a brighter sky, it appears dark. Sometimes setting sunlight can shine on a tornado giving it an orange or yellow tint. But tornadoes are generally not green. Sometimes the clouds behind a tornado are green.

My 4 year old daughter loves talking about weather, especially storms and tornadoes. (I see meteorology or storm chasin' in her future) I found your channel one day while searching for tornado videos. She absolutely loves you, Hank! When its her screen time, she will say "I want to watch Hank!" and will watch you for as long as I let her. Her favorite video is the one where the roof is ripped off in the thumbnail. Just thought you may enjoy knowing you have fans of all ages.

Nalani - You are right about that. He is an amazing videographer. I'm from the midwest originally and have been through a total of five tornados, and actually inside an ice cream parlor when it's roof was removed by one. One other one was close (I was in a hayloft in a barn and it passed between the house and myself, and the straw was sucked out the front door while I laid as flat as I could) I'm sure it was barely an F1, but it still scared me as a kid. Three others I just witnessed, but still close enough to worry me. I felt like a tornado magnet when I was a kid, and I was a kid during the day of 'a hundred tornados'... or whatever they called it. Pecos is pretty good at his tornado chasing, so I'll just stick to his channel when I want to see the next one. I'm no longer interested in being in one myself!

Very green clouds could also mean that lots of hail is forming, lots of hail needs strong updrafts to form, the same strong cold updrafts that produce tornadoes in some cases. If you see a slow moving storm that has a pronounced lowered mesocyclone with bright emerald colours around it and even vivid rainbows, it is very likely to also have tornado in there.

Hank, whether the weather is worthy or not, please share, your video's are always a pleasure to watch, whether it be sending some of our reptilian friends back on the right track, away from certain squashdom....the graceful lightning...or the awe inspiriing tornado vision you capture, it's all very well accepted and appreciated. Here's to a fantastic storm season for 2018....albeit fantastically beautiful to watch, and no human cost associated....safe travels, and less windshield replacements :)

Green storms happen even in non-tornado regions. I live in Brisbane and when we get particularly hard storms, the clouds turn green. Summer storms usually come in, in the afternoon, not long before dusk, so that may be where the yellow tone comes from, or it can be dust, because dust in the area is pretty common.

Really? What is the worst in memory to hit Argentina? Always thought the USA and Bangladesh were the only countries to get BIG Tornadoes. We get the rare one or 2 every couple of years in Australia but they could be barely classified as an EF2. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9xpodpmr9O9ZH0.html&t Last freak one we had a few years ago.

SEE YAI AYE Tornadoes don’t do borders. India gets some pretty bad ones. But, there is actually a little “tornado alley” in South America. The Andes act similar to the Rockies in the US and can create some rockin’ storms.

In Argentina we had many waves of tornadoes, the record is of more than 300 tornadoes in 24 hours... F-0 to F-4. We also had the strongest tornado in the southern hemisphere, a powerful F5 in the city of San Justo. The tornado killed more than 60 people. More than a month ago a tornado destroyed a city in Argentina, called General Acha It is not uncommon for tornadoes to appear, every year they report. The problem is that they are not given importance. There are no storm-chasers who can report one. If they happen at night or in an inhospitable place, nobody finds out, unless they destruct a city. And at least once a week, they form arc-shaped storms with destructive winds and severe hail. The difference with the United States is the extension of the plain, in addition, the warm waters of the Caribbean fuel strong storms.

Just today we had the first severe storm of the year down where I am. Was crossing back near a Kroger and I saw teal inside of the core and some nasty shelf clouds. Ran outside a decent distance out of my home to get footage of it because of how cool it was, only to realize it was heading straight at me really, really fast. Watching this video and now knowing what could've been inside made me glad I did a dead sprint back to my house.
