Hey everyone! I'm back with another why it went viral. This time we're talking about God's Menu by Stray Kids because of its impact on the boy group space and how it shot Stray Kids into their current standing. Yes, Felix was a huge part of it, but there's more going on here that I want to talk about. Hope you enjoy!

Personally, Hyunjin's iconic "Ne Sonnim!" is what caught my attention in God's Menu, aside from Changbin and Han's rapping, so it's the highlight of the song for me, and I know a lot of fans wait for it too. 😊 So I was kinda sad that whenever it would get to Hyunjin's ne sonnim part in this video, it would get cut. 😞 I never got to hear that part at all.

Raps are not usually my favorite parts in kpop songs but Han and Changbin are just so good. Their rap line is literally so amazing. Your breakdown of the song structure made me realize why you can listen to it so many times but not get bored. It's chaos but it's organized chaos and it's a banger from start to finish.

The vast majority of all of the brass / trap / synth / percussion / transitions, etc are from the genius of Bang Chan. Years from now, even after he leaves K-Pop behind, he will no doubt have a long and storied career as a music writer, composer, arranger and producer. He's just amazing.

i'll say it: god's menu is one of the best kpop songs of all time. there is nothing like it, and as many times as groups have tried to recreate it and its concept, no one will ever come CLOSE. changbin (the one who initially wrote the song before pitching it to the rest of skz) and stray kids had lightning in a bottle with this track.

You are cementing yourself as one of my favorite ktubers with each video you release. As an early Stay (My Pace era) who was there when Woojin's departure happened, I always be grateful for God's Menu and Go Life success. I always say that this in a way was their re-debut. It provided them more solid ground for them to stand and they just keep going up and up since.

Stray kids is always about timing, which I am so glad you mentioned. Like God's Menu, as most stays know, isn't even meant to be their title track until after theyve already had their photoshoots. I have a fifty fifty mixed emotions about Covid, coz it's a depressing time, but as we, stays, commonly say "SKZ finds you when you need them most" and that was it. They motivated me throughout the pandemic, made me cry, laugh, and all that emotional rollercoaster with their old and new songs, their career's up and downs, and had me really STAYing. - maybe the lyrics isnt so much the viral-inducing element but the lyrics did make some people scratch their head. Like "singing about Soup?" Or korean media acknowledging how SKZ's linguistic abilities shine thru with "Shin(New/God)" Menu - mixing Chinese, Korean, English puns in there (I think the Chinese is the character used for Shin, iirc) plus it gained them the title of "pioneering Mala-taste genre" which is, for me, a very high praise since kpop in itself already incorporates the genre mixing alot, but maybe not as striking and jarring as skz does.

I think 1 thing that people tend to overlook in styling is the decision to put Hyunjin in long hair. I have seen so many people start to check out SKZ because of that ponytail, they see this guy with a bouncy ponytail in a short or a tiktok. The visual is striking and different. It's the same effect as with Felix's 1st viral tiktok. Later on, many other male groups also started to put their members in long hair and SKZ themselves also started to rotate the long hair for quite a while. Much later on, I think there was even an article talking about how Hyunjin brought back the long hair among male idols.

Glad this showed up in my recommended. I’m practically brand new to skz, only really looking into them in the past 2 weeks. While this video is about God’s menu, it’s noteworthy that they are arguably the biggest male group now. I’m sure their next comeback and album will be huge because of Army now looking at other groups. Seems most of us, especially those that only knew bts and no other groups, are going to skz or txt. Sure Bts is still making stuff but no longer as a group and I definitely see army-stays (stars they’re saying?) in the comments of videos. And as dumb as it is, Felix’s deep voice I think threw off a lot of folks. I can’t say I was not shocked to hear an incredibly deep voice come out of a Korean boy. Only seeing bts, little bit of ACE and ATEEZ, you don’t hear that at all. You see things like people complimenting Jimin’s high range, it was definitely a shock to see the exact opposite effect. A good shock for sure, but it is noteworthy that no one expects that.

You pretty well explained my own journey into KPOP. I had discovered BlackPink shortly before the 'thing' happened in 2020, I liked them well enough, but didn't dive deep into KPOP until -that- time. Branched out a bit within various girl groups, with a firm belief that I (as a happily married, older woman) would never really relate to a boy group. Then came Stray Kids and their Oddinary era. I heard "Maniac", added it to a playlist.... kept hearing it...and eventually decided to see what this group was, and the first song suggested to me on youtube after "Maniac" was "God's Menu". A couple of comebacks, cds bought, and a concert later - I am firmly set in my StayDome and have happily drug my husband and daughter along for the ride. The SKZ 'noise' just reminds me so much of my younger hip-hop/rap loving years, their style and willingness to just play with 'sound' as a whole (the amount of times I've had to turn down my radio to see if that was a real siren, or from their song, is amazing and it never gets old haha). It will take a very special group to drag my eyesight away from SKZ. Especially given how spoiled Stays are for content! I wasn't a STAY when they went viral, but I can absolutely see WHY they went viral, and have been working my best within my own small friends/family community to adopt other Stays into Stray Kids. They're just so unique, even within their own sphere of music.

This is the song that dragged me into K-pop. I'm an eclectic music lover, from sea shanties to American folk, from classical symphonies to 80's rock. I had listened to a little K-pop here and there over each generation (yeah, I'm old enough to have started with the 1st Gen), but none of them really hooked me beyond a song here and there. Then I heard a clip of some demonically deep voice that couldn't possibly have come out of the face I was seeing and I Googled Stray Kids. They were exactly what I needed to help me through the depression that followed my mom's losing battle with cancer. Never have I been this deeply invested in any artist! I think what really draws people into them is their authenticity on and off the stage. They're truly doing this for the love of it, and not just for the sake of being "idols." Yeah, they're at the top of their generation, but I honestly think they'd keep going even if they only had one STAY left.

For me it was most definitely Felix's "Cooking like a chef" I've been into kpop since SuJu 2009. I've stopped being such a die hard since I got to college and the groups kept getting younger, my last die hard group wherein I stanned every member was Blackpink, other new groups I just listened to casually but when I head "Cooking like a chef" I just fell. Felix opened the door for me but Stray Kids as a group locked the door as soon as I went into a deep dive. They're so impressive??? Like wtf was I doing before Gods Menu???

Some parts that don't pertain to the actual song, but I think did add to some of the success. There where several in fandom scandals that where happening, most notably the allegations made against a former member, that is well documented and I will not expand on that. But the second was that a very popular fansite that collected money from the fandom for Korean streaming sites such as Bugs, Melon and Naver, was found to have misappropriated funds for themselves. They bought tech for themselves and even used the money provided for streams for Stray Kids for other groups. This helped unite the fandom in a way we haven't since the AAA voting for Levanter, our only ot8 win at that time. Besides the fandom actually being mad as hell, Gods Menu made waves before it was even released with video edits that became popular on TikTok and Twitter. The Nae Sonnim edits where everywhere for a few days, people even asking for the full song before it even came out. It's understandable you missed those since you weren't a kpop fan at the time, but I do want to say that this was a well made video and I'm about to binge everything you made. Have a nice day

As a Jpop / Jrock fan (solo singers and bands, not idol groups), I ended up getting some kpop songs in my KZfaq recommendations, so I did (very rarely) listen to a couple of songs by BTS, Blackpink, and Seventeen. But never very consistently, or went my way to look for them. I generally don't go my way to find songs. If I end liking a song (through OSTs, edits, or occasionally songs recommendation lists), I just listen to it; I rarely go out my way to search for more songs from the same artist [except a few artists that left a very deep impression on me (e.g. LiSA, Aimer, One Ok Rock, TK from Ling Tosite Sigure)]. It was Stray Kids “TOP” & “Slump” that got into looking into Stray Kids more (I found them out through the anime Tower of God). Stays were such a helpful fandom. They wrote some summaries with info on Stray Kids and its members in the KZfaq comment section of “Slump”, as well song recommendations based on what you might like if you like “Slump” or “Top”. So, I ended up watching the performance video of “Voices”, “Awaken” (no video), and the MV of “Levanter” and “Miroh”. (Stays also posted links to prove that Felix's voice was natural, and not a altered, since so many of us newcomers from Tower of God were unsure and confused 😂) And there were more recommendations in the newer comments of those videos. In 2 / 3 days I ended up remembering their name, face, and voice (which I can't do for most other groups even now). I think one of the factors that helped me getting into them was that they have videos for most of their songs (whether it's MV, performance video, dance practice video, or street MV). So, it was easy to try many songs of their discography since they were also visually appealing (alongside me ending up liking the previous songs I heard from them). Their older songs being just as good was one of the reasons I was able to get into Stray Kids so quickly. Alongside, how helpful the fandom was into digesting info regarding the group (even without me asking beforehand; they knew new people would come from the anime and commented a lot of useful info right away). God's Menu was final punch. After listening to God's Menu, I totally became a Stay. It was something I didn't expect at all. Felix's line took me a back even though I knew he has a deep voice by then. The song and MV was just so different from anything else I saw and heard before without sounding like too quirky / meme song type of song. Since then, I stated to branch out more into other groups too (but Stray Kids still remains my favourite group).

As a K-poper of 10 years and a multi-stan, I've gone through groups that were iconic and legendary as well as ones that were vastly underrated. And to me, Stray Kids are the new era of legendary. They are leaving a huge footprint on K-pop and will be cemented in the K-pop wall of fame for generations to come. They are up there with Big Bang, BTS, EXO, Infinite, and Super Junior. God's Menu was truly a moment in both SKZ's career and for Kpop. I do think that this was one of the best eras for SKZ+ the In Life album. The Felix line, was pure genius. There was NO WAY that line wouldn't have gone viral. I can name atleast 5 of my friends who can't tell you how the whole song sounds but they definitely know 5 Star Michelin. But the issue I have now is how GODS MENU changed the trajectory of SKZ/Bang Chan's production. Chan found his a formula to make songs go viral. It's nothing new, it's already a hugeee issue in USpop tiktok hits these days. Have that one catchy hook/sentence that will immediately catch your attention. Back door's point was "the knocking + door squeak sound" for Christmas Evel it's again Felix with the felis Navidad, for Maniac it was the repetitive deep Maniac maniac sound. it's clear that their songwriting focus shifted after God's Menu's virality. Add in the video game/Marvel style esque visuals you have an amazing formula. It's working because it's gaining a lot of audience from the specific niche of people who are into these stuff. But as someone who has been with them since their predebut show, I am bummed because to me it feels like they have traded some of the creativity to this find then viral moment in each title. This formula has ended up making their title tracks shorter, and lose the longevity. I know I won't get tired of repeating MIROH but I quickly got bored of Maniac. While their still lyrics have tons of substance - they don't quite have the raw genuineness that they used to. Newer fans might not agree with me and yes i know that tons of other kpop groups do this too. But it sorta stings cause I started loving them for their passion for self expression through music and genuineness. They stood for the whole "we don't care about trends we do it our own way". But on the brighter side, their bsides and solo stuff have only gotten better and better so maybe not all is bad. Sorry I wrote a huge para but I felt the need to say it somewhere without my fellow Stays eating me alive lol. Oh man I also love how you mentioned the Boat rig, I LOVE IT and how it's utilised in all of SKZ'S MVS.

Interesting viewpoint here! It's cool to hear from a long-time stay on something like this. I agree that their production has gotten more... manufactured-sounding? They've always had an industrial and mechanical sound, but it seems more clean and clear-cut these days. Some of their older stuff was messier and more chaotic-sounding, and that might be why it seems more genuine. I don't think I would go as far as to call it a formula, though. Formulas usually span the entire song and make it to the point where you can predict exactly who/what is coming in the next section. You're definitely right about them trying to put a viral line in each song, but I still see a TON of variety in general song structure and overall tone, so I personally am willing to let it slide if it isn't affecting the whole song. I'm interested to see what they've got for us coming up, and I'm glad you're comfortable voicing your opinion here! My goal is to create spaces where we can talk critically about these kind of things while still respecting everyone, so it makes me happy to hear that I can be an outlet for you on that front

God's menu, back door, thunderous, and maniac are the title tracks that felt different to me (compared to early debut tracks), but I feel like they decided to take a different approach and go back to their roots with case 143. The maxident album in general sounds/feels most similar to early debut days. Maxident has been their most successful album so far and since they are reassured that stays are not gonna leave them I feel like this next comeback will sound more similar to their earlier albums. The trailer for the album 5-stars just screams 'we're gonna do what we want, and we don't care what you haters think.' I've never been this excited for a comeback.

@@catchingteez Yeah I think your first para summarises what I'm struggling to put into words. I dislike calling it a "formula" as well, but I had to for the lack of a better word 😅 I used to dislike people saying that they tried making God's Menu 2.0 3.0 etc. so I winced while typing it lol. Maybe it's their approach to music production than production itself. Their production sounds so much more polished these days which shows their growth and how they matured as producers. But I'm also worried that they're leaning more towards a production that's more palatable to general listeners these days and I came in for the unique and edgy sound that they had initially. So even though I do want them to take their music where they want to, I also feel scared that they're going down a path that I'm not looking forward to. I'm aware that I'm being slightly nitpicky though because they're my ults so it's their music that I'm most familiar with. For me everything that they released 2018-2020 will be their peak personally while I quickly got bored of most of the tracks on ODDINARY and MAXIDENT. I guess I just miss the bold and unapologetic nature with which they used to produce music.

@@expurtlaygos5566 oooh so I have a theory that I could be really wrong about but I felt like they released Noeasy-Maxident albums to appeal to a wider audience as they wanted to cash in on the popularity they got with Kingdom. Idk, for me Chan had been going for this direction since day one. It started with My Side, being the absolute jarring mismatch of 2 sounds and with how he gives Felix the hook, line and sinker (albeit in Korean, but since theyre more international, they incorporate more English lines to make them more memorable for international fans). And unlike their older songs, Chan sees more structure rather than formula now, intending to have layered motifs while retaining a clearer sound because back then he wanted everything and is more complicated. He retains the wildest samples of organic sounds, digestable (or maybe as you say, formulaic) title tracks while retaining the chaos we know and love with more confidence of what their sound is unlike the soul-searching chaotic motif they had in 2018-2019. And i agree that their bsides still retain their multifaceted sounds, or actually improving since they have bsides that are title-track level, too.

BP was my gateway to kpop. started listening to them before the pandemic. i only listened to them and some BTS songs. but like you said, kpop takes time so BP was the only kpop group i followed pre-pandemic. if you would have asked me in 2019 if i would watch a kpop or BP concert, I would have said no. I wasn't in too deep then. then of course, the whole world shut down. we all had a lot of free time and because of BP's limited comebacks and minimal content, I started watching reaction channels reacting to BP. Those reaction channels really added fuel to the fire that was God's Menu. Because of them I started seeing stray kids under my suggested videos. they were everywhere. it's like they're inviting you to go watch the video. and a lot comments said that if you like BP, there's a good chance you might like stray kids as well (I didn't get this at 1st but I realized BP and Skz are actually more similar to each other than most people think- deep bass instrumentals, in your face lyrics, etc). so I did finally watch my 1st stray kids video and it was a reaction to God's Menu. lol. it was not even the actual MV. after watching it, i realized what I was missing out. i was like, who are these boys?????? so I immediately tried to digest as many skz content as i can and i fell down the rabbit hole. i found a new group and i have a deeper appreciation for BP and kpop as a whole. i started listening to other groups too like ateez, itzy, enhypen, etc. now, i'm a stay and blink and casually listen to other groups. oh and i got to see both of them in concert 2 mos ago. they were my 1st kpop concerts i ever went to and it was so worth it. all because I watched God's menu. so thank you God's Menu. 😂

Stray kids was my gateway group into K-pop. I did try a few years earlier to get into kpop through bts and black pink, but they just didn't click with me dont get me wrong i did like a handful of their songs but that was the extent of my kpop at the time. After accidentally coming across skz i was like alright that song was fire let me just listen to their other stuff and let me tell you, i was fully prepared to not like it but DAMN i fell down the skz rabbit hole so hard they are my main, i do now listen to a lot of other groups all generations sure i might be a couple songs from all the artist ..my playlist is ridiculously long.

Awesome breakdown of "God's Menu"! I'm only just starting to poke my toe into the deep ocean of boy groups after being a GG listener for about five years now. So far, StrayKids is the only BG to make it onto my playlist. "Maniac" absolutely floored me after hearing Felix's deep voice! I was first exposed to kpop back in the day with Psy and "Gungnam Style", then found BlackPink in 2018. The same day I binged BP's discography, I found Twice and Red Velvet, and then worked backwards into second gen to deep dive into 2NE1, SNSD and (f)x. I've been listening to kpop since then. It's been wild to watch things grow and change in just the short time I've been along for the ride. Thanks for the great video! I'm off to check out that Ateez one as I've heard a lot of good buzz about them. Something about pirates? Lol. Looking forward to summer cbs from the BGs. 💜

To this day I still can’t believe that they almost released a completely different song instead of God’s Menu 😭 Convinced that they themselves are scared of what would’ve happened if they never released God’s Menu too because they literally said they’re never releasing that old title track LMFAOO

You know what... This sits right with me. (Which is impressive, its incredibly difficult to place all SKZ members into "best of" positions within the 4 main idol skills, each only once anx with a limit of to per category. Seriously, a dilemma as old as STAY. Haha.) This is truly the first time the positions just feel downright wrong to me. Naybe its because every other time the creator is too wirried about upsetting other fans. So, thank you for also being a step in then right direction as far as thay goes too, famdoms controlling their idols and even other fans...ugh. Yeah, needless to say, I can't wait to see those traditions die out.

Hey.... This video was great and i loved how you broke down and analyzed each part like lyrics, choreo etc for this song. I'm a NCT 127 fan and I've lived through both Kick It which went viral and skyrocketed NCT to in being top 3 bgs now and Sticker which had everyone and their mother screaming 'WTF is this!?'. If u can, I'd love to see your analysis of both the songs comparatively and your thoughts on them. I think it's honestly be a cool video! Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of SKZ and love their "noise band" aesthetic. But........I wish they were AS popular for their beautiful ballads. And I think they need to pull back slightly on the "Felix's deep voice" thing as well as Changbin and Han's rapping, because IMO all three of those are being overused. Felix has a gorgeous singing voice in the higher octaves, which again, IMO, is underutilized. And Changbin has a beautiful singing voice, as does Han. I also wish they would cut back on their use of autotune. Some wonderful songs to check out, for those who have not yet heard their softer stuff: ------------------------------------------ [Special Stage] Stray Kids - Story That Won’t End , Stray Kids - 끝나지 않을 이야기 show Music core 20191221 [HOT] Stray Kids - Secret Secret, 스트레이 키즈 - 말할 수 없는 비밀 Show Music core 20210904 Changbin, Felix "좋으니까" | [Stray Kids : SKZ-RECORD] Stray Kids Waiting For Us Lyrics (Color Coded Lyrics) Stray Kids "#LoveSTAY" Video I.N "향기만 남아" Cover (원곡 : 허각) | [Stray Kids : SKZ-RECORD] Stray Kids "24 to 25” Video I.N "너였다면" Cover (원곡 : 정승환) | [Stray Kids : SKZ-RECORD] Hyunjin "꼬마별" | [Stray Kids : SKZ-PLAYER] STRAY KIDS (HAN, SEUNGMIN, I.N) - 'GONE AWAY' Lyrics [Color Coded_Han_Rom_Eng] ------------------------------------------ Lastly, I wish they would make some songs using their actual instrumental skills. I know Han plays guitar (and I think piano?), Bang Chan plays piano, guitar and drums, and I think some of the other members play instruments, too.

With SKZ, they have a "Noise/Loud" branding and flaunt what they are most confident in. So it would be conflicting to suddenly pause on Felix's iconic voice, Changbin/Han's hard and spitfire raps. I mean, they still incorporate vocals in their title-tracks, God's Menu quite literally. With every comeback, they present new/improved skillsets like how they released the Replay Album with their solos (most of them being vocal-centered) ...tbh, most of your wishes peel away the musical integrity of what SKZ is going for. Since day one, they used samples and digital instruments over what would be more natural for bands to use (like Xdinary Heroes or Day 6), what they go viral for is on what Fans listen to more or what fans discover about their all rounder skills. Their bsides exists, they even have MVs and sing them in their concerts for ballad lovers. their loud chaotic title tracks are SKZ's experimental branding to be as Noisy and Loud as possible

@@skzoteight0325 All true. But. I expressed those thoughts because I don't want listeners to think the group sounds repetitive. I love their current sound(s), but would like to see more innovation and risk-taking. And utilization of skills we know they have (beatboxing, the use of acoustic guitars, etc.). But in the end, whatever direction SKZ goes, I'm here for it.

I know I will sound like the thoughtless fan that only wants her stan to stand out. That said, I wholly agree that, while Felix’s deep voice is his trademark, his normal singing voice is *wildly* under-utilised, especially since it sounds SO good. I think someone else said it in the comments, but it’s not only the impressive range, it’s, I suppose, the color (?) of his voice? it’s unique, it’s recognisable in all the ranges he decides to adopt, and, ok, I’m a simp, but it just makes me feel really good, it’s so pleasant. I would love tho hear him try a more melodic approach!
