Ghibli is anti-commercial, aims at encourageing people to think. Disney is commercial and now it only aims to make people quarrel.

there was a scene in whisper of the heart where shizuku walks over a highway after going to the library, the clouds are moving, her skirt moves with the wind, people are passing by and the grasses seem greener and it was so thearapeutic to watch even theres nothing that really happening. i just love her taking her time, walking around. delivering her sister's letter, her father's bento, gazing at the small statue of the baron. at howls moving castle, there is that element again. old sophie aggressively cleans the whole house, critters and mice are scrambling to get away, sophie was sitting at the nearby lake after hanging the laundry. i love the scene of her and the witch having their own struggles on climbing the seemingly 1000 steps to the palace of the king. it was such a generous animation and so amusing to watch sophie cheering on the lady. one thing ive notice in ghibli is that the characcters have respect for elders, when people nowadays are so rude, it was another thing to melt your heart. i have to mention that i absolutely love porco rosso and the opening scene of the kindergarteners being hilariously kidnapped by the air pirates, ghibli depicts children really to their age and honest nature its cute

I think Ghibli thrives because it shows the magic in the mundane and ordinary. When I walk I take a little dirt path it’s not that long but it branches off into a little forest. I just might see Totoro there. Disney the world is distinct and differ than our own.

I love that as well as keeping their fictional universes in tact, H. Miyazaki makes his characters and stories feel grounded and realistic. Just like Britt and David with the Classic TV adaptations of TTTE and the original books it was based on, The Railway Series by Wilbert Awdry.

In my view, Studio Ghibli makes a right distinction between the world of fantasy and reality unlike Disney, which is more about fun and entertainment. Most importantly, the factor, which makes Ghibli more appealing in comparison with Disney is the former's approach of emphasizing much on the every aspect of the scene with it's projecting every situation very effectively.

One non-Ghibli example of this is The Railway Series and the classic series adaptations and original stories.

Ghibli movies are memorable and watchable for all ages and you can never get bored watching them , Disney have lost that touch a long time ago and now are just ridiculous in my opinion and all about politics and appealing to the masses, and except few movies and production here and there that go back decades ago , I don't really feel compelled watching them again , Ghibli is a whole childhood imagination that really sets the mood and has great messages and the animation, the creativity and the music is on another level .

Agreed. Disney films are typically too simplistic and formulaic to be anything other than entertaining. Ghibli films have always had more variety, imagination, and thematic depth, and the studio seems far more willing to take risks than Disney. Overall Ghibli feels like a studio where creative freedom is the ruling philosophy, whereas Disney is more interested in making money by commercializing its movies and appealing to modern trends. Basically Ghibli prioritizes the storytelling and Disney prioritizes the audience.

@@cedricdiggory400 Encanto: quirky female main character must save her community from a disaster that threatens to upend their way of life. Basically the plot of Frozen, Moana, and even Raya and Wish. Obviously this formula manifests a bit differently depending on the film, but it's still very much in place. Don't get me wrong, I think Encanto was a much needed improvement, but it still fell into the "quirky female mc must save the (blank)" formula. Ghibli just doesn't really have those.

Unless we talk about their pathetic remakes (only Maleficient, 101 Dalmatians and Alladin were any good). Huh to be fair the only good thing they did after Lion King remake was series Miraculum: Ladybug and Cat Noir and even there characters start to develope from 3rd season.

Both studios have their masterpieces and their sucky films but I feel like Studio Ghibli addresses the trials and joys of real life much more accurately. With Disney you know it's gonna a happy fairytale ending but SG pushes the envelope and is more realistic in it's approach so I give Ghibli the one up on Disney. HOWEVER ever since the Disney Renaissance and merging with Pixar, Disney too has addressed good moral stories and broken away from just princesses and fairytales but SG is still superior

I may be a Studio Ghibli aficionado, but I'm also a huge, major Disney aficionado. Why even make comparisons with the two and say one is better than the other? Sure, they both have different styles of art and storytelling, but they both make wonderful, unforgettable films. And whoever said that animation is just a "staple for kids" seriously need to get their brain checked!

Both Studios have their own identity in general. There's a reason why in the Disney Animation Studios 100th Tribute called Once Upon a Studio last year you cannot see any Pixar characters in general only the Disney Studio characters are present because they stay true to their roots.

Here's my take Disney movies are fast-paced while Ghibli movies are slow-paced in general. Also i've tried to stay away and avoid a lot of fandoms either Ghibli or Anime or Disney or Animation fandoms out there because my late brother had always said they are the most opinionated, aggressive, defendant, rude and maniacal fandoms out there than any other movie fans. Becuse if you disagree or don't like what they like they are pretty much very TOXIC to the highest point when it becomes an argument. The James Bond and Harry Potter fandoms are most chill and laid-back. If you disagree with what they like they pretty much respect and understand it.

Being in the film industry, I've always leaned towards Disney over Studio Ghibli, and here's why. Disney films, in my opinion, have this special charm that sets them apart. Their storytelling just pulls you in effortlessly - well-structured narratives and pacing that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Those visually stunning scenes are pure magic, with characters that practically come to life through expressive animations and meticulous attention to detail. And let's talk about the music, I mean, who doesn't know a ton of Disney songs? Disney's got this knack for crafting iconic scores and unforgettable songs that really elevate the whole experience. The animation style, with its polished and commercial look, is just visually appealing. For me, it's the perfect mix of accessible storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and musical brilliance that makes Disney stand out. Plus, their films are about 30 minutes shorter, avoiding that risk of losing interest that can come with drawn-out narratives. While Disney entertains with dynamic storytelling and visual splendor, Studio Ghibli offers a serene retreat, encouraging reflection through nuanced storytelling and unique, hand-drawn animation.

Nowhere in your long essay did you highlight Studio Ghibli which is totally understandable given the dominance of Hollywood in American film industry. here is why I prefer Studio Ghibli. 1. Unique storytelling: Studio Ghibli is known for its rich and often complex storytelling that appeals to both children and adults. Their films often explore themes such as environmentalism, pacifism, and the human condition in a way that's thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. 2. Attention to detail: Studio Ghibli films are known for their stunning animation and attention to detail, from the lush backgrounds to the intricacies of character design. The hand-drawn animation style and meticulous craftsmanship contribute to a sense of artistry that many fans appreciate. 3. Strong female protagonists: Studio Ghibli films often feature strong and complex female protagonists who defy traditional gender stereotypes. Characters like Chihiro from "Spirited Away" and San from "Princess Mononoke" are celebrated for their courage, independence, and resilience. Cultural authenticity: Studio Ghibli films are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and folklore, offering a window into a world that may be unfamiliar to Western audiences. This authenticity, combined with universal themes, gives the films a unique charm and appeal. Emotional depth: Studio Ghibli films are known for their emotional depth and ability to evoke genuine feelings of joy, sadness, and wonder. The characters and stories resonate with audiences on a deep emotional level, leaving a lasting impact long after the credits roll.

Disney is superior to me too. I was not really impressed with Spirited Away, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki (the only Ghibli movies I've seen). They're too Japanese and to me, an American, it's foreign and I don't understand a lot of the Japanese culture references. This is why Ghibli movies always have and always will fail to find an audience in America

@@Sanman95Or maybe it is because most Americans are too consumeristic to accept smth that is anti-commercial. Disney was always about money and politics. And now it is all about politics. It isn't to make entertainment anymore but to make pathetic movies to make audience quarrel. Frankly you Americans are the last people to talk about race since you made it status instead of taking into account biological facts. Be greatful that you are able to see movies that feel different because due to Hays code and isolationistic politics hardly any forreign movies have been avaiable in USA.

There is something big Disney expresses that Ghibli doesn't, and that's the pain of being an outsider. People everywhere who have been shut out for being different - LGBT people, autism spectrum people, you name it - have found characters in Disney's films that they can identify with. From Dumbo to Beauty & the Beast to Hercules, Hunchback and Mulan, those movies express a very big pain that a lot of people out there struggle with, and as genius as Miyazaki's movies are, I don't think he considers that perspective very much.

I think you missed the point, because Studio Ghibli intentionally treats minority problems. For example, in Princess Mononoke, Ashitaka is a member of a real ethnic minority called Emishi, who is supposed to be different from the majority group of Japanese, Yamato. This film also features workers with leprosy, who were discriminated against harshly throughout our history. In the tale of Princess Kaguya, Sutemaru is a member of “kijiya"(woodworkers). They were historically discriminated against for their nomadic culture to seek good wood in mountains. Many think that Horikoshi (wind rises) is on Autistic traits.
@WillScarlet16
@WillScarlet16 5 ай бұрын
I didn't miss any point. If Ghibli movies ever deal minority problems, they only vaguely hint at them. They never openly address the pain of feeling left out, or call out the society for its cruelty. And for the record, I'm not even talking solely about racial minorities - I'm talking about ANY person who's been forced to be an outsider for any reason. @@matreshkaB

I don't understand the hype around Ghibli. Grant you, I've only watched one or two of their films. Yesterday I started watching Spirited away, getting ready to be mesmerised by all that beauty. Yea, the backgrounds are beautiful, but the story and those nightmarish creatures, people turning into pigs, etc. It's full of disturbing stuff, that I kind of don't want. I stopped watching halfway with the feeling of unease. I may be thick, but I was not blown away.
