What can you do with a Data Science major?
In Data Science you can expect to study science, math, computer programming, analytic geometry, statistics and so much more. Basically, Data Science is the study of data and how to interpret and analyze it. If you can think outside the box, enjoy problem-solving and the process of discovery and could see yourself working as an information research scientist, operations research analyst or a data architect, then this might be the right major for you!

My dad is a data scientist - and has been for nearly as long as the field has been around (Walter Linde-Zwirble if you wanna look up his stuff)- and the *number one* thing he tells people going into data science is *take a creative writing class!* because you may be able to do all the math but it will mean nothing if you can’t relay that to the people who don’t know the math. He’s always telling new data scientists to *look for the story* , data science is all about looking for the story within the data

I’m in my last year of undergrad and interning as a data scientist. This video is the culmination of everything I’ve been learning by hunting down facts about data science from colleagues and online resources. I found this info to be really insightful and informative. Thanks for making these awesome videos! Wish I knew this existed when starting my undergrad!

I got a BA in Communications a decade ago and have never used it. So I'm attempting to go back to school to get a better job. I just knew coding sounded interesting to me, but through learning to code I found out that Data Science exists. I want to be a data scientist, but I am concerned that I wont be able to do the math parts of it. I didn't realize there were these other related fields though. It makes sense, and maybe I can get a similar job that is less math.

I’m starting my degree in Information Systems and Operations Management. It’s less math but still under that data science umbrella. I’ve definitely leaned towards the humanities in the past so this is a def change up for me. But I am capable of doing the work and the jobs out there are plentiful so I’m going to give it my best. I’d suggest looking into it if you’re worried about math but have a knack for thinking creatively and problem solving logically.

Wild, I studied philosophy in college and yet… most of my work requires me to do this stuff listed here. 😂🙈 I work in nonprofit fundraising. I ended up doing this stuff mostly because my org uses this super budget friendly fundraising database with no bells or whistles. It pretty much just churns out spreadsheets of data and no analytics.😖 I was pretty good with excel, figured out the database with no training, and I could take spreadsheets and make them visually understandable to non-data ppl. I mostly had to learn a lot of math on my own because I’m incapable of saying, “no.” Lol. If someone asks if I have data that can visually demonstrate x, y, or z. Then I’m going to figure out how to get them that answer. I also do all the data analytics for our email/digital communications and social media. I don’t have much of a background in math. I never struggled in high school I took AP calculus and all that but couldn’t imagine what I would do with it for college or a career so I didn’t pursue it seriously. Like, I think because I studied philosophy I was allowed to take Geometry!😅 instead of statistics or algebra like all the other 1st years.

Lol philosophy and digital audience major here. Initially I was leaning toward phil and data science but the amount of advanced math turnes me off. I love philosophic logic for argumentation but not dry math. Plus I find enjoyment in influencing others through rhetoric and persuasion and thought that data science is more of behind the scene work without such influence.

The only real negative about this video is that the entirety of ethics was mentioned in one word: "negative". And that was so briefly spoken that it didn't really matter. This video is all about getting a high paying job and churning students through four years of college. *But data science is full of troublesome consequences* so it would have been good to mention that, and to encourage students to take philosophy (especially ethics) classes, business classes that deal with ethics, or psychology and sociology classes that deal with morality and social responsibility. A side note: this video is yet another example (there are many) which pushes the idea that the reason to go to college is to make money. That is a late concept in the history of academia.

I've heard some (people on the Internet) say that one should go into college to make money, especially when one has to rack up a lot of debt in order to go to college. Would your stance change if this were the case?
@TheDanEdwards
@TheDanEdwards 2 жыл бұрын
@@theboxygenie The history of academia goes back many centuries to the first establishment of universities and colleges. Those were often for religious reasons, but still the idea was that one should devote oneself to learning in order to serve others, and to pursue knowledge for knowledge's sake.

@@TheDanEdwards I think that's shifted more towards PhDs and undergrads are more about skilling to find jobs, which is why PhDs are generally 'free' and undergrad isn't. So I think academia for the sake of pursuing and advancing knowledge still exists it's just shifted. And in that sense it makes sense to pursue an undergrad degree where you'll be able to find a job unless you plan to continue and get your doctorate and then study your passion

Yeah, I appreciate these amazing video series about electives and majors, but I would be more interested in this major if they show the power of reading numbers, how they are useful in different situations, as well as interesting cases where data science helped or played key role…

I wouldn't call cryptocurrency a "discovery". I call it a scam. So in a sense you can say computers opened new avenues for conmen.
